I've been slowly trying to teach myself how to use photo editing software and have just about managed to work out the basics. Before I go any further I wondered if anyone else uses a free bit of software that they would recommend? I'm using GIMP 2.8 and to my unelightened brain it seems very good.
I'm also wondering about video software. I've got Windows Movie Maker but is there anything else worth getting and learning to use? And what if you wanted to layer photos over video, can you do that?
Cheers

I dont know so well about video editing (done it once) but layering photos over a video is rather an advanced feature I'd guess.
If you have a digital camera, there's often some bundle software that you can install for organising photos and vids. There might be editing possible too.
Check with a search "free photo editing software wiki".
At least there's a wiki article and list of software about video editing software...

Cheers Ruscoe - I'll look into those suggestions.

Ooops - I had to say "At least there's a wiki article and list of software about audio editing."
I suggest Cthulhu might know video editing better. ;)

Thought this might help

GIMP Anna
its as good as it gets.

Anna, the missus does the same thing. She used GIMP but moved onto photoshop, which is a paid for editor....unless youre a computer wiz like she is and get it free by some dosgy way round it. She also uses a pen and easel thingy to edit. Better than a mouse apparently.

well, i'm actually quite out of shape considering the cutting business, though i'm cutting more than ever, but this time its vegetables that i'm cutting, becoming a cook.
and i really cannot say much about freeware. i've worked with profesonal tools like avid or final cut. but at home i used edius and fell in love with it.
from the list pole posted i would recommend the lightworks software, though i don't know it. but it seems to have a preview window, which i find necessary.
i found a free download link to edius:
http://edius-5.soft112.com/
the decision to make depends also on the hardware that you're using.
edius is a tool that has (had?) many drag and drop options, i liked that for the workflow. and it was able to combine different video formats in one timeline.
normally you should have a preview window in which you load the clips you want to have. there you set in and out points and drag them to the timeline. when you combine clips you can drag transitions to the edges on the timeline which apply there. you can also move a jpeg in there and combine it with an effect. you can add timelines, so that you can have different layers. you have a clip running, add a timeline, drag the photo at the point you want to have it and add an effect on how you want the photo to appear. you can also work with opacity/transparency of the whole timeline to make clips appear.
i don't know if that freeware is running with your system, but i would recommend edius for editing.

the sense of support and community in our little world of newmodelarmy.org is exemplified in this thread.
a damsel in distress and an appropriate response

Brilliant stuff - thanks guys.
I thought GIMP was about as good as it gets for a freebie. Lightworks does seem to get good reviews but Edius sounds like just the ticket - thanks cthulhu . And Drummy - nice one on the pen idea, it hadn't occured to me.

I'm curious. Did you download it? Is it working?
Edius is a professional editing tool and i think the download is a trial version with some functions blocked, but it should have enough functions to do some effects.
I made a video at home with edius and if someone wants to take a look. But be warned, and i mean it, it's an anti-war song and i really tried to shock the viewer with images. Its gruesome and not for anyone who cannot stand to see dead children. I had a nervous breakdown doing it, but i still very much like the outcome.

and for lightning up a bit after that, heres a link where i used wipeout by nma. a video i did on analog equipment and used images i filmed myself in island.

Both excellent video even if the music in the gwar video wasn't for me

Hi Cthulha
Some powerful stuff there - I can see why that was tough to make. To say I really liked it feels like the wrong word given the subject matter but I hope you know what I mean :) I also really liked the bubble floating over the sea in Wipeout.
I have to be honest and say I haven't downloaded it yet. I have checked it out and it certainly does do what I eventually want to do! Borne out by what you have shown can be achieved. Thing is until I asked here I didn't know if what I was thinking of could be done at home with free software. So now I know it is I have an awful lot of work to do to get to the point of putting stuff together into an actual video. I wasn't joking when I said I was slowly teaching myself GIMP and I have only just about got the hang of cropping/colouring/enhancing/blending etc. I'm only just learning layers! So I've got hours ahead of me just sorting out all the collected images. All I've got to show for it so far is a bunch of test colour pics and folders of original shots! Don't hold ya' breath !!!!
Cheers
