I'm sure this has been brought up before but sod it, here we go again. ;)
I love the SB album unlike others (not least certain NMA fellas...)
So post a tune / clip / opinion / whatever...
IMO, it's a bloody classic and was so welcome after a few NMA barren years. The NMA and Nobody Else live CD was a magnificent artifact of that period.
So here's 'Whites Of Their Eyes'... a truly experimental / weird NMA track unlike anything they'd done before...

What do you think, fellow NMA-ers?
-
It's actually one of my fave tracks on the album.
-
I agree, it was great to get my hands on a new album and it was different to what had gone before - well 5 years before....
But it got heavy play and I too like Whites of Their Eyes. Along with No Pain, Aimless Desire, Wonderful Way to Go.....
-
Queen of my heart I think is a masterpiece.
I agree with master ray - the album was just a welcome after a few years in the wilderness and not knowing what was happening with the band.
It does get slated but I think the opening track is one of the best out of all of their albums - mind you there is a few good ones.
-
As you say we have discussed the like / dislike of this album before Ray, but its an album worth talking about. One that seems to have divided opinions more than the others.

I'm definitely a fan of strange brotherhood there isn't a song i dislike it maybe lacks that killer song that most of the albums have though no pain is a personal favourite but that is for deeply personal reasons n I've reinterpreted the words
-
I love Strange Brotherhood. I actually lost touch with New Model Army activities some time after the Impurity album. I rediscovered them when Strange Brotherhood was released. So a gap of 8 years ! I then found that there'd been another album 5 years before that had somehow passed me by completely, so I hurriedly acquired LOHC too. But it was Strange Brotherhood that rekindled the love affair. It was pure joy to be back on the NMA train after so many years. WWTG was and is a brilliant opening track, and there are lots of gems in there. It's probably the least raw of all their albums if that makes any sense. Some would say overproduced, but I like the dense, polished sound. As well as songs already mentioned, I must say Big Blue and Gigabyte Wars are brilliant tracks for me. Some don't like Gigabyte Wars (is it the horns?), but I love it. "Web of lies and savage tales" - I always took that to be referring to the Internet, such as it was back then. Still sums up a lot of the WWW's content now ! Even so, it was the first album cover that had www.newmodelarmy.org printed on it, and so I also found the band's website, and one of the earlier versions of this forum. Have a lot to thank this album for !

Cheers for that old link, Shush, enjoyed re-reading those comments.
Lotsa love for SB! Yay!
-
So, you fellow SB lovers... 'Gigabyte Wars' or 'Song To The Men Of England'?
:-\
For my money, gotta be 'Song...'
-
Fck no competition for me Gigabyte war takes it by a knockout in the first round

A pal of mine first got into NMA thanks to 'Song...' and now he's a devoted fan...
Big punch to the ribs! It ain't a knockout yet!
;)
-
Giggers deffo ;)
-
I think over all it's me least favorite album, absolutely love it though.
Yes Gigabyte wars is one of my faves on there, brass section and all ;)
-
I really liked it when it first came out but then got over it a bit. I rediscovered it about 10 years ago and really love it now. Headlights, No Pain, Queen of my Heart, Big Blue, Aimless Desire. Lots of great tunes on there.

I just see them as two separate songs that use the same backing really. Love 'em both !
-
two separate songs that I'm not particularly fond of; they're OK but never been in a personal top 10 whatever my mood - as was said above, the horns maybe?
-
Ive got the Song to the Men of England poem on my wall at work, as a retort to my Royal flag waving gaffer, who tried converting me. Banter ;D
-
It's a weird album...a bit unfocussed at times, a bit uneven and lacking energy, overproduced maybe...but also NMA experiences in new sounds and vibes, and also of course some great songs and moments i especially love "Headlights" and "WWTG" is a great opener, "Aimless desire", "No Pain", "Long goodbye" are solid tracks too.
"Lullaby" has a kind of haunting feel, too.

Was never a favourite of mine but my 3 year old special needs son feckin loves it.
He was going ape sh*t in the car one day when he was about 1 year old & I put on "No Pain", don't know why, maybe my subconscious took over. "Across the town.." and instantly he looked at me & smiled. I then remembered I used to sing it to him in hospital where he spent his first 3 months in intensive care.
Since that day in the car, anytime he's distressed I sing it softly to him & he calms down & becomes the happy little man he is. So, cheers NMA.

Gavin, I can think of no finer recommendation for this album or any other... :)

Song to the Men of England! I can't tell u how :D I was, when I 1st came across it on Lost Songs. I knew they'd be Percy Shelley fans, but it was immensely gratifying to hear it confirmed in song! Apart from Shelley and Joolz, have they ever covered any other poets?

Well there's this.
Not an exact cover but certainly based on it:
The Charge of the Light Brigade
Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
"Forward, the Light Brigade!
"Charge for the guns!" he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
2.
"Forward, the Light Brigade!"
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldier knew
Someone had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
3.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.
4.
Flash'd all their sabres bare,
Flash'd as they turn'd in air,
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wonder'd:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro' the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reel'd from the sabre stroke
Shatter'd and sunder'd.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.
5.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro' the jaws of Death
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.
6.
When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honor the charge they made,
Honor the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred.
Copied from Poems of Alfred Tennyson,
J. E. Tilton and Company, Boston, 1870

Definitely Song. GW is just one of two NMA tunes I can't get on with.

I like Gigabyte Wars. I think there are some great lyrics in there, and I don't find the music off-putting at all. Horns appear in other songs as well (Knife) so that's not a deal for me.
