Title: Imagine you could educate a brand new fan...
Post by: Sheena on June 01, 2015, 04:26:13 PM
Ta da!  Here I am.  So educate me.

As an absolute newbie, what must I absolutely listen to first?

What do I need to know about?

TIA  :-*

(ETA The back catalogue is overwhelming; so I've started at opposite ends: oldest and newest...)

If it was me, I start latest , BWAB, then go backward in chronological order back to Vengeance. Band has gone through changes over the decades, but it is still a current band. They are writing and releasing new material on a regular basis, so to get a feel of what will be next, listen to their latest material.

Plus, you liked the gig, at gigs they mainly play latest material with a few acknowledgements to their past. But, as I have said here before, NMA are not a tribute band to themselves relying on past glories. The most important album is always the latest one.

High was my first and i thought it was a great album to start with.
Then I would say Eight, Carnival.
I would start with the newer stiff. The older stuff is great too.

Great suggestions for new stuff, I am loving BWAB Although the old stuff does resonate with me , as I grew up in West Yorkshire under Thatcher and saw what was happening (albeit through a child's eyes - and perhaps thats why I wasn't aware of NMA at the time)

I don't think your gonna get anyone to probably agree Sheena
Me personally I would start at vengeance and work my chronologically form there, that's the way there intended to be listened to, don't forget to take in the various live albums, lost songs and b sides and abandoned tracks along the way and Justin's solo album is also a must

I would start by looking at your holiday planner and getting used to the holy trinity of gig, hotel, and travel :-)

Hope to see you at a gig soon.

Cheers

Hi Sheena,

Pol hit the nail on the head: no-one ever agrees on these sorts of questions. I'd go with Today Is A Good Day but only because it is my personal fave. There's quite a bit of back catalogue as you say so maybe one of the big live album cd's: the 30th anniversary gigs have got something from every album up to then I think.  Whichever you go your ears are in for a treat.

You should add to JC's list: curry ! Oh and a good pair of boots  :)

Well - I have to say that I doubt chronological order is the way they're "intended" to be listened to.  If you want to hear how a band evolves, then yeah.  If you're looking for an album that will grab you by throat and demand your attention, that's not necessarily the same (although Vengeance does that).  I think most people seem to suggest the first album they started with, which is to really say you can't go wrong with which ever album you grab next.  So, I'll suggest the first album I listened to and got hooked on: Ghost of Cain.

The 30th anniversary compilation is 2 CD's of 'the hits', great album tracks and some rareties...

I expect you're right Pol.  Perhaps a better question might have been what are your favourites and why?

ETA:  nope, that's an awful question too.  As you were.

Sheena, I know that Christmas is a long way away, but you might want to look into it.  last year sold out and hotels aren't getting any cheaper, especially with it being a Saturday two weeks before Xmas.  A lot of NMA fans use the Premier Inn in Goldsmith Street, just around the corner from NRC but it's already over £90 per room...

Yes, the pre-gig meets are always fun but if a certain fine gentleman by the name of Lawrence does his usual aftershow after the gig... bloody priceless.

I know, it's a lot to take in!   :D

Welcome Sheena :-)

Despite all the different opinions on what's best there does seem to be a general consensus that Thunder & Consolation is the band's pinnacle. It just combines everything that was great about NMA at the time and has aged very well.

I absolutely love Between Dog and Wolf but that is possibly the most hotly debated NMA album ever. It's certainly a departure from their usual guitar driven sound.

The good news is that there really isn't a dud so you should find something to like on any of their albums

Sheena, welcome

I think you'll find as many opinions as to the best bits as there are fans, but then the band has been around for > 30 years!

And even more, you'll find a lot of us change our minds as to which are the best albums frequently. Eight and LOHC are my current faves but I'd also rate B Sides and Abandoned Tracks as containing some early highlights - the band said at the time that their best tracks were often the B Sides....

Welcome.
I would just say go and see them as often as you can, and where ever you can.
Nothing compares to an NMA gig.
You can listen to all of the past and present music but seeing them play live is the key, that is what they do best and songs always take on new dimensions live.
You get to meet new people, go to some really obscure places, and watch the band every night what could be better than that.  :)

I would suggest trying to go to  a mainland Europe gig sometimes as well. Like Amsterdam.
It's a different vibe completely.

I agree with the live albums. Between Wine and Blood Live is a good one. I would recommend the 30th university live concerts but am not sure if they are still in print.

It's understandable that mainland Europe is difficult. I bet when you go to more UK gigs, you will get so excited by the whole thing, that you will want to travel to see the band.

Myself, I am American actually and am crazy enough to have gone to Europe 4 times since December 2012 to see this band on tour.  I also found them later. But the point is that NMA tours are addictive.

Sheena, welcome on the Board.

I'd recommend you to check "All of This The live Rarities" CD and old Marquee gigs from the 30th Anniversary CD/DVD's in a case of older 80's live sets, then dive in to the albums like Thunder & Consolation, Impurity, Eight, High and then Between Dog & Wolf. All of that in one day as a hardcore set! And after taking some breath, listen to Between Wine & Blood which is only few songs.  ;)
