A regular poster here brought up the subject so I thought I'd start a potentially interesting thread... or possibly a shitstorm... ??? ;)
In my damn-near 30 years of following the band, it's a rare NMA fan that I meet who doesn't have tattoos, whether they be NMA related or not. And I totally appreciate and respect that, lets say that straight from the start.
I don't have a single one. Not because I hate the concept... I've seen some fantastic body artwork out there. It just never appealed to me.
I just don't understand why some would undertake such a permanent thing on a whim. It's 'cool' to get a tattoo, yeah? But surely it must be something deeply dear to your heart that you want permanently inked on your skin? Example... a girl I used to work with regularly got a new tattoo at random, just wandered into the nearest parlour and picked a design off the wall. No thought involved, just some permanence that might look OK at 20, but what's it gonna look like at 50? :-\
I see so many young people in my home town with tattoos that can only be described as 'f-ing ugly...' ???
Again, this is NOT a disrespectful message to those of you with a bunch of tattoos. I'm just trying to understand why so many people are so keen to mark their skin for the rest of their lives for the slightest of reasons...
Anyone else here tattoo - free?
Anyone regret their body artwork?
Love to hear from you...
:)

That's all okay. It's all a matter of personal choice. It's not something for everyone as long as both parties respect one another.
I have tattoos and i have a favorite artists is well. She happens to have designed all of the NMA artwork. :)

... and we finally agreed on something!

I don't regret my tattoos some wish I had waited a bit and had maybe better ones. Sometimes its can feel a bit socially awkward especially the ones on my wrists and the one on my head normally gets a few comments when I first met people, yes I can get judged by it until people get to know me . Anyway I don't lose any sleep them, they are there and there part of me n I'm generally happy about them. Can I add I would never take out any of my piercings either they are staying for life

Witch, I respect the fact that you love NMA, and then go to great effort travelling to another country to get you tats done by Joolz at great expense to yourself when you could instead have it done by tattoo artists in Germany. If you are going to have NMA artwork as a tattoo, we are in a unique situation where the artist who did NMA sleeve artwork can also do the same as a tattoo . Rare, most probably unique situation

On shush's point I would like to mention lal hardy from muswell hill London who done some of the meteors artwork and tattoos n also the spiders on my back. I'm not sure if he is still working but if he is alive and well he definitely will be

Mmm.............
I don't presume to judge others but to get inked on a whim is a very short sighted decision. I've known people get the most ridiculous pieces because they thought it was a good idea at the time - how about someone getting the Harley Davidson logo when they'd never riden a bike in their life? Or someone getting one of those old weetbix boot boys on their arm?
For myself, all of my pieces have taken at least 6 months from deciding what I wanted to actually getting inked. I sketch them out (badly !!!) and imagine them on my skin, changing them over time until I'm sure they are what I want. When I am sure - then it's time for a bit of pain ;D I have also changed my mind about some pieces I thought I wanted while living with an idea and I bet if I had gone out and got those pieces without pausing for reflection I would not like them now.
As it is I have never regretted any of mine (first one was 27 years ago) and if I woke up tomorrow and they had all gone then I'd have to get them done again. They are part of me.

No tattoos or piercings here. No problem with them, but really haven't seen any one with a tattoo and thought: "That is awesome!". Have seen some nice ones, though.

Master Ray.......
I think you know how i feel about mine.

This is timely. Got my first tattoo 20 years ago in a dodgy shop in Nottingham. Walked in off the street and picked a Chinese symbol off the wall... Meant nothing to me, but I did it a further twice! Then 2 years ago I decided that it was time they made way for something more beautiful and meaningful. I researched local studios, picked one with a good reputation, carefully chose an image with meaning to me (a tree of life)... And let the apprentice tattoo me instead of waiting for the studio owner. Needless to say it isn't what I hoped for. So, I visited Joolz last week for advice about improving and personalising my tattoo and I'm booked in in 2 weeks. I think this tattoo will be a work in progress for ever; but I don't regret any of it for one second. My tattoo grows with me and reflects what's happening in my life.

ruckedout...
I think Shush will agree with me when we say it's not nearly as bad as you think...
Note to anyone reading this... it's not an awful tattoo and it's not in an intimate place, we weren't in a Turkish bathhouse or anything... ;D
How about anyone having a partners name tattooed on them? From what I've heard, that's often the kiss of death for a relationship, sods law and all...
-
I have only one tat a Dragon on my left arm. I got mine way back in 1999 I do want to get more and I have a design in mind that would go on my right arm. I will say this was no spur of the moment thing or hanging with my homies and getting drunk or stoned and lets do something crazy . I thought about it for many years and got it at 43 so I was no spring chicken 8)

Haha....Turkish bathhouse!!
I don't mind the first one which is on my right shoulder blade, it's the second one on my left shoulder blade that doesn't look right. I had someone standing on my shoulders at the Nottingham gig a couple of days before i was booked in, my shoulder was really bruised but i still kept my booking. Because i was a novice, i just went in there and sat down, by then it was too late so i now i have one lower that other. I didn't know a bruise and some skin missing would cause such an issue.
You live and learn i guess.

I do agree it is not that bad at all, can't see anything wrong with it. As it is on your back you can ignore it anyway -- if anything, its an NMA tatt that will be seen mostly by others at an NMA gig - nowt wrong with that !!
Sheena, I also got my first tattoo 20 years ago in a dodgy shop in Nottingham. But to be fair, I drew it myself, several times in several sizes, cut out the drawing and tried them on to decide on the size and exact shape before I settled on the final one. Have done the same with all my tats since - after several weeks of deciding and planning.

I saw a picture of a flower fairy at my nans when I was a little girl, about 8 or 9.
I loved it and looked at it every time I was there.
I had it tattooed on my shoulder about 10 years later.
That was 27 years ago.
It was one of the first tattoos the artist did in "nice colours" rather than black/blue/green/red.
It was commented on once back then in a pub. The person said "A woman with a tattoo ? Lesbian or New Model Army fan ?" I kid you not !
:o

Had some work done on my tattoo yesterday and boy is it sore today! It looks amazing though; worth every minute of needle hell. Next sitting booked in September...

Do it!

Last time someone said that I ended up with my nipples pierced lol

Some of my best friends whom been going to NMA shows with me for the last 10 to 15 years have no tattoos.
So thats more than just a few ;)
Myself I have 4. First one was the knot from thunder and consolation, which I got with my older brother.
Third one is with the ashes of my mom, and the last one was a celebration of my family and son. All tattoos have meaning or represent an event or bond. Only the second tattoo i got, has non, I got it because I had time to spare in Amsterdam.
But no matter the reasons, I have No regrets...
