Great choice! What an intro!
"Vagabonds" has a great intro.
-
"Pretty Vacant" is quite high up there for me. Simple, effective, full of attitude. Gives you enough time to finish your pint and get on the dance floor.
-
Gotta go with another Cure one, 'Plainsong'... gorgeous and the words don't kick in until the two and a half minute mark...

I know I've been absent but this thread was brought to my attention from a group of boyscouts who knew there were unqualified but well meaning people spreading misinformatin here; and I've been asked by batman himself to correct this.
It takes one second only for anyone to listen to the first 3 seconds of 'All along The Watchtower' - the Hendrix version.
We can close this thread now
hahahah oh I'm sorry boys and girls please forgive me - i've been working at Discogs too long and i've forgotten how to be nice :)
Not seen you fer ages - my vote goes on the Hendrix version of the Bobby Dylan tune ( and hey fact fans while were here can I just say what a great piece of writing this is (the Dylan lyric - not my post)- doesn't make sense at all then if you shift the third verse to the top and read third verse as first, first as second and second as third it all makes perfect sense! Dylan = not bad at all)
Anyway - best intro ever is ker chu knu ger ger knu ger etc - all Along The watchtower - The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
-
Got to say J.J.Burnel's opening bass riff on "No More Heroes" by the Stranglers.
-
This is a nice idea for a thread, Anna!
There are are so many but where to start? Well, I'll go now with Mr. Barry Adamson and his album Soul Murder. There's an intro called "Preface" that leads to "Split". Here's Preface:

If we're talking long intros, how about this;
Love and Rockets - Body and Soul (7 mins and 48 seconds of intro !)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZA9-tmyJaO8
-
And I was in the audience here :D
Some extraordinary screams from Dug Pinnick before the song proper kicks in at 2:45
Kings X - Over My Head

Not especially long, but if you are -like me- in love with Les' bass, you will like this:

Surely this is one of the best and most recognizable intros ever. One of the first songs I fell in love with as a young lad , still rocks today

"Where the streets have U2 name":

That U2 song does have a great intro... and at the risk of getting U2 fans all agitated, here's another one 'City Of Blinding Lights' live in Chicago... bonus points for having a bit of Arcade Fire as the 'pre-intro'...

Good call!

Streets U2 is an awesome intro. This guy starts from scratch if you click a little way back on how to build it up.

From the same album. I would argue that "Exit" is also an intro that beguiles, because its outro is so short.
-
Some cracking cheese here Gromett ! :D
I was gonna pop back and drop Where The Streets ..... myself but instead I always loved this one and the first note would always get me up doing my bestest Tim Booth on acid dancing............
The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCp-BOeVzKk
First riff I ever got the hang of playing too !
:)

Oh so many to chose from. Some great tunes here.
At 8:53, Pink Floyd's "Shine on you crazy diamond" has to be one of the all time classic intros:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UXircX3VdM
Ride's "Leave them all behind" is also great. Love it when the guitars kick in.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIsnb1TKYjE
And the Nephilim's "Endmoniada" is pretty cool:

Ok, I'll stop now

If I had any shame I'd keep this to myself, but the opening of Detroit Rock City by Kiss

-
Riff Raff by ACDC - There's a great intro
-
Although I am not a big Oasis fan, love the guitar intro to . Rock n Roll Star. They did turn out some excellent guitar music and brought such sounds back to the charts.

The great director Peter Weir made a quite thrilling use of this song's intro in the interesting, strange moody psychological drama "Fearless", starring Jeff Bridges...enjoy the ride! ;):

I must admit that this song and especially its intro always gives me chills, almost 30 years after the album's release (another one of my fav song on this album is "Red Hill Mining town")
Well, if it's gonna be old school rock and shit... bit of AC/DC, anyone? You know what track this is...

and what about "Hell's bells"?? ;)
Some others "heavy metal" intros i like...:
On my favourite Thin Lizzy album "Renegade"...
The title track...i love this bass line, the clear guitar sound, Phil Lynott's warm, moving voice and lyrics:

Same case for "It's getting dangerous":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uadp-BL_QH4
"Angel of death":

Ohhh, but then there's Neil Young and Crazy Horse (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgDy1SQ6hnw)!!! 8)
Way too many! By the way, were you looking for lyrical starts, or instrumental starts? :-\
-
Joy Division - "Dead Souls"
And does an entire song count as an intro?
If so:
Elton John - "Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding"
