Title: The Motorhead thread...
Post by: Master Ray on December 29, 2015, 08:39:19 PM
Seems as good a time as any...  :'(

One of the very, very best rock 'n' roll bands ever.  Like so many of us of a similar age, Motorhead were a big thing in my musical development.  The late 70's and early 80's were full of vastly different musical genres and ideas. but this hard, nasty, mental thing struck a chord with a lot of us.  Mostly through 'Ace Of Spades', their most famous tune and even though it's become a bit of a cliché, one of the best hard rock songs ever.

So many people said 'a lot of the songs sound the same...'  well, that didn't hurt the Ramones, did it?   ???

Much of the acclaim and outpouring of love for Motorhead over the last 24 hours seems to focus on what you might call 'the golden era', ie stuff from thirty years ago... please, if you're into this band, check out more recent albums like 'Bad Magic', 'Inferno' and 'The World Is Yours'... every bit as good as the 'old stuff'...

Sadly, I only saw them live the one time.  Wolverhampton Civic Hall, about four years ago and DAMN, do I wish I'd made the effort in subsequent years, it's something I truly regret.  Not gonna happen now, eh?  And that thing about Motorhead being the loudest band on the planet... a reputation truly deserved.  I was near the back on the balcony at WCH and, when they kicked in, it was a barrage of sound that you actually FELT, not just heard!  Seriously, your clothing was rippling from the sound waves!  You think you know what loud live music was like?  You know f-all if you never saw Motorhead live!   :D

If you can find some way to watch it, please check out the 'Lemmy' documentary from 2010, trailer here... shows what an interesting, complicated and, yes, 'nice guy' he really was.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRENbQIuoLU

So... it's a sad day for music fans.  The word 'legend' gets bandied around, too much these days, for the silliest and slightest of reasons.  Lemmy was a musical legend and Motorhead were a legendary band.  Just unique.  I'm genuinely upset by this news.  So let's end my rambling thread with Lemmy playing my favourite Motorhead song, 'Bomber', from just over a month ago...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6zzJIhq_fM

RIP, sir.

Oh, Ray you said it so well.

I think it's really unbelievable how he stayed alive as long as he did when you think all what he did and all that s**t he took. And most of us have been born during the same time he played in all those bands;  Rocking Vicars, Hawkwind and Motorhead. He became like an immortal who always took us forward in music and a way of life as long as the western evolution had come to new levels in many last tens of years.

This may sound ridiculous but it feels strange to think Lemmy has gone now. Who else could fill those boots? No one.

I like the long "silence" you put in the end in your post after the R.I.P. text...

Here's my fave: Fast and Loose (https://vimeo.com/27418022) (on Vimeo).

Rusco, I agree that the 'long silence' thing would be a moving tribute or something but, honestly, it happens every time I post a new thread... anyone got some advice about how I can switch that shit off????   :o

No matter... fellow Motorhead fans, post a video or two, old or new!

I will admit to never hearing a Motorhead song ever( as i have never really liked that type of music).  It is sad that the singer has passed away though.
It's sad that anyone would pass away from cancer not just a rock star.

I may give it a listen now.

MR ok, could the space between your undersign "take this shinking boat and point it home" and your post be due to some extra hits of enter in the undersign column in your profile where you've written the text?  ???

EDIT: ok no it cant't be. I tried it. Whatever, I like this photo  :)

Not really listened to a lot of Motorhead, but I absolutely love Ace Of Spades, just a great fast rock and roll song. Think the first time I heard it was on the young ones. Anybody remember that show? Anyhow here is the clip. :- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOAz4nPNvLI

Joolz has posted about this. She says that it was her 30th birthday party, and that Lemmy was a very polite man and he spent most of the evening on the pinball machines  8)

Motorhead are one of the constants for me over all the time I've liked music. A mate gave me his brothers Overkill, Bomber and Ace of Spades albums about 35 years ago and I've been into them ever since. So many songs that when you're feeling a bit down snap you right back to it shouting "**** you".
Here's one of my favs:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnN6T3O7jww

What a band and what a fella Lemmy was. He really had done it all and although he'd lived in LA for years he stayed very British and talked a lot of down to earth common sense. No bullshit about the man. And will there ever be such a vision as him head back growling away smashing chords on his custom Rickie bass. What a guy. Never be another quite like him.

Couldn't believe it, when I heard on the radio at work on Tuesday morning that he had died. My ex used to joke that Lemmy was her dad. Her mum lived near Lemmy back in the late 60's, early 70's and she always said why couldn't you have dated Lemmy. I was lucky enough to see Motorhead a couple of times in the 80's. Loved them. I picked up the latest album only a couple of weeks ago. Lemmy was a Legend. I recommend the book White Line Fever, a brilliant read. Especially about his early days. I went on holiday once to where he used to live in Wales and saw the landslides he caused when he blew up the cliffs at the beach. Gone but never forgotten.

I am genuinely and inexplicably sad that Lemmy has died, given that I don't consider myself a Motörhead fan.  He was such a bold character; greater than the sum of his parts (as my friend so aptly put it).

Indeed. I agree on the book White Line Fever comment. It was a great read. I remember when I had read half of it, I knew there was only a latter part remaining and I'd hoped the book would last forever.

All those scenes about blowing up the hills, every funny thing Animal did. Hilarious book that I'd recommend for everyone to read!

I can agree with what Sheena has said here. I knew very little Motorhead music and I am not a big fan of metal in general, but thought Lemmy was a great character. Think it is often a shame when someone with such a long carrier is defined by one song, but in his case, what a song !! Ace Of Spades to me is one of the most important songs in the history of music. The reason being, so many different people like it, No matter what their regular type of music is, you can even see your granny tapping her foot to it. Go to a wedding disco and ask for it and you could get it played because it is so well known and accepted as a good and familiar song. Can't think of any other loud Rock, or heavy metal song that could be described  the same .

Excellent post, Shush. You don't have to be a fan of LOUD rock to accept that Motorhead and, yes, Ace Of Spades, were important moments in music.  Although I would have liked to have taken you to a Motorhead gig just to introduce you to the sheer velocity, volumn and utter mental-ness of it all...  ;)

I did hear the Ace of Spades song and it was not my type of music.

This will be an unpopular opinion.
Three other musicians have died this week yet Lemmy gets all the media coverage. They get little.
It's a bit bothersome because all should be mourned the same. I am not downplaying that his death was tragic but others are too.

Natalie Cole, John Bradbury and Guru Josh?

I think two of those musicians have been mentioned on this thread and somewhat widely on the whole internet?

Agreed, it is a shame that Mr Bradbury from The Specials wasn't more widely recognised.

But you can't ask that a one-hit wonder from the early 90's should get the same recognition as a truly legendary and influential figure (that huge names like Dave Grohl, Metallica, Alice Cooper, Anthrax, Pantera etc etc are falling over themselves to pay tribute...)

In this day and age there are thousands of celebrity Musicians , Actors, Poets, Authors etc. As such a celebrity dies just about every day. At the end of the day it is down to the individuals here to post an R.I.P. on the R.I.P. thread as they see fit.
I think it is reasonable that a legendary figure such as Lemmy from the world of, shall we say none-mainstream music is likely to get attention from members of a forum of a none-mainstream band such as NMA

People mourn other people in relation to how much of an impact they had on them personally, rather than how important the deceased was.

Well said that, Shush.

I want to mention couple of funny or otherwise interesting details from the White Line Fever book yet: Lemmy went once to see Knievel jumping from a top of a building.

He played bass in the Damned at one gig.

He also played in Frankie Goes to Hollywood once.

Fast Eddie and Philty Animal used to have fun by fighting at each other; punching each other while Lemmy didn't join this.

There was once a tour when Philty couldn't walk at all. When a gig started, roadies lift Philty to the drum kit behind the drums from a wheel chair. When travelling with the tour bus, Philty couldn't even sit on a seat so he layed just on the floor of the bus!

Good point.

And if we want to go there, why do we get headline news about actors and musicians mostly? What about the directors and the people who wrote the script that comes out of their mouths. Lets go further, why are people who pretend to be others or play a guitar more in the news than people in business, charities, military etc?

Four new elements recently synthesised/discovered are needing a name. IUPAC tend to have traditional methods of systematically naming them, or after a scientist, or where it was first discovered. whatever...

As a chemist, I like the article that I've just heard on the radio. "If it's the heaviest metal known to man, it should be called Lemmium"

'kin awesome to have an element named after you.

I think you are 100 percent right Shush.
For instance I was a kid when Joe Strummer died. Maybe 14 and I cried and was very upset. It was because The Clash was one of my favorite bands from the age of 11 to 15. I felt a deep connection to his words and music at that time. Therefore it crushed me.  If someone is moved by Motorhead, then Lemmy's death probably stings as well.

A big Finnish milk producing Company Valio made a contract with Lemmy in Finland on 6th of Dec 2015 about an advertisement to use on TV. They even filmed it then! However they probably didn't get all licenses ready and as we know Lemmy passed away the same month later on.

The advertisement is on the YouTube, so HERE IT IS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=PfgycAOT0KI).  :) :)

Enjoy!

Damn, he looks so old and ill... but his little smile at the end... he was always in on the joke, whatever that joke was...

Rather a fitting tribute that his last appearance was in something so odd...

Here's some more about his appearance in here: 6th Dec was Independence day here, Motorhead gig in Helsinki and they started with Bomber. Vid: https://youtu.be/KO271VMkPIs (I'm not that jingoistic if you know what I mean but what a starter...)

They've played here for 33 times. I've seen them thrice.

I'm not sure but think they played twice in Germany after Helsinki before the tour end.

I thought about you Master Ray i watched last weeks again on Blu Ray some good old Dario Argento movies like "Opera", "Inferno", "Suspiria", "Tenebre"...incredible, incredible stuff, never tired of them!!
And yes, the "Phenomena" soundtrack...i like "Locomotove" but what another famous bass player (Bill Wyman) did for this film is just haunting... 8) ;):
