Very nice to see Thunder & Consolation name checked in Against Me's episode of What's In My Bag. Inge's comments did make me giggle (about 4 minutes in) ;D

Thanks for sharing Anna , would love to see nma do one of these

Would be interesting to see an NMA one. There's loads of them from all sorts of folk - I noticed that Frodo has done an episode 8)

BUMP!
That was very sweet and funny, indeed! Happy and thankful you shared it with the rest of us. A very long time ago, NMA were name dropped by the beautiful Dannielle Dax (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2soMoXwxuwI) (it's about 2:13 into the clip). I believe, NMA were also named dropped by Ian Astbury of The Cult on a Canadian music program, way back in the late '80s early '90s. Sadly, haven't been able to find the clip on youtube, though. :(

If my memory serves right weren't they from Bradford too? Just thinking...
Cheers

I don't know. :-\ All I know is that Ian Astbury spent part of his teenage years living in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada... a city in which New Model Army played, back in 2009. You've certainly got my attention now! Would really love to know if there is some greater connection, between the two bands (or frontmen of both) because Mr. Sullivan too, has ties to Canada. WOW!!! What a small world. Anyone in the know, please jump in here?

From Cult's Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cult
Early historiy 1981-1984
"The band's origins can be traced to 1981, in Bradford, Yorkshire, where vocalist and songwriter Ian Astbury formed a band called Southern Death Cult.[5]"
They later on changed the name of the group.
:)

Thank you Rusco, lol, I should've done some quick research! Still, there must be more juice to this burger, so to speak.
1. Were they friends or rivals, New Model Army and Southern Death Cult / Cult ?
2. Did they ever play on the same bill?
3. Are they friends or rivals today?
Would love to know. How fascinating!

I know that Ian has family in Glasgow

I know that Ian has family in Glasgow
Thanks Pol. Mr. Astbury's another one who I hope writes an autobiography, at some point. I'd really love to know more about his time in Canada. I think he really hated it, if memory serves (from another Canadian television interview, I once saw). I believe he has Native ties too, which is also quite fascinating to me. I'll buy any book, from any musician / artist that doesn't mind sharing their times, recollections, experiences, etc., pertaining to the Great White North, Canada. :)

Re: Mr Astbury, this might be a false memory, an urban myth or just signs of the onset of old age confusion but I have it in my head that he shared a house in Bradford with Justin & Joolz amongst others "back in the day"

WTF!!! Really? :D
Someone ought to add this major detail into their autobiography(ies... x 3)! Please? Hope they all got along well. How fascinating, cool is that!! WOW! :D
Thanks for jumping in here, Anna Woman von Rhineland-Pfalz! :)

That's in my bonky little mind too.
Might just be a kinky fantasy though eh?

I think Justin mentions it in the Documentary if my memory serves me correctly :-\

Justin mentions it in the Documentary if my memory serves
Thank you Dilla, for mentioning the above. I had no idea that that bit of trivia made it into Matt Reid's NMA documentary!
This is going to sound really silly, stupid and strange, to probably the majority of folk here, but I still haven't seen it. But that's not what makes it odd, though. Truth is, I bought a proper copy of the NMA documentary when it was released, but I'm SO afraid to sit down and watch it. I was one of the original ones begging for some kind of NMA film to be made, that I have since become terrified, mortified even, of watching it. I know, I know, doesn't make any sense... well, to me neither!
I'm afraid of what I might see, of what I might feel... and 'GOD' knows I will feel, and profoundly so. I just know I'm going to sit there weeping, I just know it... I can feel it, sensed it from day one. And it's ok if I do weep, it's something I'm very, very used to. But I have to be ready for it, otherwise it will break me. I also fear that it's going to trigger massive volumes of further questions for the band. Some folk might remember, I ask way too many questions as it is! What then, when there's no chance of having the questions answered? :-[
If and when I finally muster up the courage to watch the documentary, I want it to be when I'm alone, by myself. The last thing I need is to explain to whomever walks in the room as to why I might be weeping while watching a rock documentary... then either get yelled or laughed at by them. I want peace when I finally watch it, no disturbances. I want to love it, to savour it, to have it light up my mind, lift up my soul, flood my heart, and bring intense and immense joy, happiness, love... instead of heartbreak. :-[
It appears, I have way too many high hopes :-\ great expectations.
-
Oh, grow a pair and just watch the bloody thing! ;) ;D
Actually, I appreciate the nervous anticipation in someone's mind when they build up too many expectations. I've been sadly disappointed by many records / films / TV shows. Not a nice experience. But I doubt you will be disappointed by the BDAW documentary... unless you're expecting it to be going much past the T+C years. Yes, it does touch on certain aspects of post 1989 NMA years (not giving anything away) but it does focus on a certain period of NMA's history...
Other than that, it's often funny, often moving and rather illuminating as to the way it hasn't always been a smooth ride between the NMA inner-sanctum (Joolz has a couple of choice comments to make...)
I'd still love to see a follow-up... :-\

Interesting read 8. Please do let us know if when you do watch it what effect id had on you.

...grow a pair...
lol, I think it's going to take my entire lifetime's passing, before that happens! ;) ;) ;)

I didn't know this. Wonder why now, Mr. Reid chose to title the film after NMA's latest recording, of that time, "Between Dog and Wolf"? :-\ Hope it'll make sense to me, once I've actually seen the film.
...it's often funny, moving and rather illuminating as to the way it hasn't always been a smooth ride between the NMA inner-sanctum...
Thank you so much for not giving too much away, Master Ray.
I'd still love to see a follow-up...
Oh, yes please somebody, anybody "out there" in "here"... PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! The more NMA related films there could be, the better, and perhaps happier I'd be! Did you know that NMA did a "making of" piece for the album "HIGH", but some fcukin' S.O.B. bastard stole Mr. White's laptop! >:( ARRGGHHH!!! Now, none of us we'll ever get to see that one. :'(
...let us know if when you do watch it...
Shush, I'm quite certain it'll raise trillions of new questions... get me talking about it / the band / the music / etc., for many decades to come. :)
-
Well its been a while since we talked about the documentary. Hope it happens. We could do with more NMA relevant discussion here
-
...We could do with more NMA relevant discussion here.
Oh, very much agree with you there, Shush. That's something I keep hoping to see, whenever I can manage to pop-in for a virtual visit (which isn't as often as I'd like for it to be, but sometimes everyday matters / life gets in the way). I've noticed folk tend to drop by and post when there's a new NMA release, song, album, concert, or project.
Wish more people would post on these boards, though. It used to be quite the busy place, a number of years ago. Not sure what happened (can't be down to Facebook / Twitter, I don't believe that's the reason), but hopefully folk will come "home" again, at some point. I'm sure they still love the band / music, how can one not? NMA just keep getting better and better with each passing record.
Special shout out to all the foreign language speaking / writing posters, who used to post here a long time ago. lol, even though I didn't know what the heck was being related, I certainly enjoyed their presence here (as I do with absolutely everyone who posts here nowadays... yes, even the ones who tend to stir up a bit of contraversy, trouble, mischief). Keeps things interesting side of things, I think. No? :)
-
Totally agree about the NMA related discussion thing... but, realistically, how many more things can be brought up between releases? There are a ton of threads out there that could be re-activated, but there's only so many questions that can be asked in the first place..? Whereas 'everything else' is, obviously, anything... a wider topic for discussion! I do enjoy the chats about unrelated and, yes, silly / irrelevant stuff, all part of being in an online community, I guess...
So, a suggestion about something to do over the next few days, you regulars or newbies... find an old thread and bring it back to life. Some of them are years old, there must be something in between then and now that can be said. Might pump a bit of blood back into the Forum, yeah?
