Title: Tattoos give you cancer...
Post by: Wessexy Witch on July 26, 2016, 11:07:13 AM
So they say today.

http://www.msn.com/en-gb/health/familyhealth/tattoo-inks-can-give-you-cancer-and-one-colour-is-the-most-dangerous/ar-BBuKJy2?li=BBoPH6F&ocid=ASUDHP

Really ?
Cancer ?

 >:(

I'd like to see a shed load more research here to see if there is any scrapings of truth here.

We all know about new gloves/needles/sterilization/cross contamination/HIV/HepB.
Most of us use reputable artists/shops who will NOT tattoo a person who has any sniff of alcohol about them or be off their faces on anything else.
We hope and rely on these honest good practicing tattooists to have a good code of ethics that they stick to.
This is where I hope they don't use any cheap inks that they feel are dodgy in any way. The article states Chinese inks, I can't comment because all I know is what I've just read. The President of the Piercing and Tattoo union goes with this, so I'm with him. More research and standardisation of inks please.

Thoughts here ?

Think its the normal scare mongering nanny state bull shit tbh. Yes everything in life has risks from the sun to every passing lorry n car. Yes tattoo parlours must reach the highest standards possible and council enforcement officers make sure they do. Having just recently been to Terry's in Glasgow I would compared it with going to the dentist in terms of cleanliness. The article didn't give any facts and figures or any solid proof. Seems like someone at the eu parliament doesn't like tattoos n has come up with this. Reminds me a bit of all lies printed about vaping n we thought the tpd was bad do some research on what the FDA are currently trying to enforce in America.
Its not going to stop me getting anymore tattoos that's for sure

Hmmm...what do I think?

I think that, these days, you can get cancer from just about anything. Scientists seem to be finding something new that will potentially give you cancer about every day. I am not saying that they are wrong, how could I possibly say such a thing? If they are, what can we do? It doesn't really make a difference, I suppose, when everything constitutes a potential danger.
Or maybe they still don't really know. More thorough research would indeed be a good thing. They don't really say what kind of cancer they think tattoos may cause, right? Skin cancer, I assume?

The thought is obviously a bit worrying - they key word in this article, as in most of these findings, is "CAN", though. Same with the allergies.

It should indeed go without saying that you should pick your tattooist carefully, like you have said.

Too late for me now - so I'll do what I have always done: pay close attention to anything that I feel is out of the ordinary and, other than that, try not to stress too much.

Tattooed and pierced is good - cancer is not - so I hope with all my heart you will kick that desease's sorry behind, Wessexy With :)

Well I'm not too surprised. It seems that anything you put in the body that is good for the soul is bad for the body.

Ok so I had a quick look at this. Although several news outlets have picked up the story, none of them provided a link to the supposed report that all this is based on. Some refer to The Sun as the source of the information.

A quick look at the ECHA website showed no recent news involving tattoo inks.

A quick search of cancer links to tattoo ink suggests that the risk appears to be minimal. https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Virve_Koljonen/publication/223981755_Tattoos_inks_and_cancer/links/00b7d5374bb9928b37000000.pdf

However, from what I can see, it does look like tattoo inks are not covered by any regulations. While some will welcome this, I do think it's worrying that you have no idea what actually goes under your skin. So while it seems to be safe now, you have no idea if new products will also be ok. Even your squeaky clean, responsible tattooist won't know what's in the ink they're using.

As these chemicals stay in your body for the rest of your life, I do think it's a good idea to make sure they are not poisonous.

FFS.  Cancer can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere.

A workmate of mine from a few years back had a ten year old son who got terminal cancer totally out of the blue.  Dead now.   :'(

Likewise, a brother of a friend of mine, tee-totaller and non-smoker, clean living chap... he got terminal throat cancer, he won't make it to this Autumn...

Avoid tattoo needles if you must.  Seems like most of the tattoo parlours 'round my way' are strictly regulated.

The Grim Reaper still has one eye on you.

For what it's worth, the point of the article was that the inks are not regulated and that the industry would actually welcome regulation.

Think we would all like to see Sensible regulations, the problem is that politicians tend to go over board. No one wants to see tattoos being forced underground and into totally unregulated kitchens etc. All good tattoo artists want the highest standards. They should and must be listened to n not some eu commissioner who doesn't have a clue.

:) :) :)Very happy to hear that - I am quite sure someone would have mentioned that to you by now, like, at least as a piece of advice to maybe not get any new tattoos or something. :)
