Title: NMA @ Their Most Romantic?
Post by: The Ghost of Cain on September 12, 2016, 06:29:51 PM
I'm trying to convert my girlfriend into a NMA fan, with v little success. I've manged to convert her with surprising success to many of my other favourites. Then 1 day I happened to play Family Life & she told me (in an almost aggrieved tone) that it was the most romantic NMA song I'd ever played her & I realised that the worth of music, to her, is measured by how  'romantic' it is. So now I'm trying to compile her a CD based on this criteria. The trouble is NMA doesn't really write traditional love songs. After a strong start with Queen of My Heart, Knife, Love Songs & 11 Years I'm left  :-\. Any ideas?

Thanks STP, good suggestion, I'm now listening to it! Now just another 14 or so to fill the CD...

She doesn't like NMA?  Dump her!  Immediately!

You know I'm kidding.   ;)

Queen Of My Heart is my 'most romantic' NMA tune, but I guess this fantastic band don't really do conventionally romantic songs.  Certainly, they do songs about love, in it's various forms (Drummy B springs to mind) but the whole girl / boy thing... I'm struggling.

Perhaps it's just one of those things you'll have to agree to disagree on...  ???

Hmm...Billie could be a girl's name...added! & 1 from the latest album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96-IFoyc-Og. No Greater Love is indeed epic, but I fear its intensity would have her reaching for eject

if "Queen of My Heart" doesn't have any effect on her, I'd give up. Beyond that, JS's solo album, thats quite romantic, basically love and appreciation for the Sea.

- Ballad
- Marry the sea
- Mambo Queen
- Sex (The black angel)
- Summer Moors
- Marrakesh
- Orange Tree Roads
- Poison Street
- Southwest

Some fine suggestions, the CD will be filled yet! Orange Tree Roads & Southwest are perfect; & Summer Moors (romantic in the Byronic/Brontean sense) would probably be my pick as the definitive answer, though she'll likely find it a bit :'(

Lean Back and Fall

I Wish

So your girlfriend thinks that "If I could have my way, I would line them up against a wall" is romantic?!?!?

Run fast. And run far!!! :-)

Oddly enough, I think that's the v part that appealed to her. I guess it's the righteous anger against those who have hurt a beloved. She has issues with her family...Oh dear, I shall have to get em in line  ;)

Any ideas?

Vengeance
The hunt
Here comes the war
Christian Militia
Sex (the black angel)
Heroin
Flying through the smoke
Another imperial day
One of the chosen
Bloodsports
Today is a good day
Angry planet
Burn the castle

Orange Tree Roads

But is there really a future for the love in this song?

"Will you still love me...when everything is changed??" ;)

"Far better thing" somewhat is about love...killing someone by love because you don't want him/her to suffer anymore...

That would depend on the answer to the question. Everything will change, so it's natural to wonder. The song leaves it unanswered, but sounds hopeful & optimistic, though I'm sure, like everything else, the nature of that love would change too

Justin once said before playing this song live, something like "If you're not changing, you're already dead i think!"

And put 'Sleepwalking' on there too - instrumental, but I defy anyone to remain unmoved.

Before I Get Old
"I'll watch the sun set over every sea
From every city wall, every mountain peak"

I Love The World - Romantic, in the doomed, despairing, sense
"But we are locked together here, this bittersweet embrace
Oh God I love the world"

Ocean Rising - likewise...
"And I'll be there - where the sky touches the sea
At the edge of the ocean where the beautiful world fades into the grey
I dream of the ocean, rising, rising"

and Leeds Road 3am is a sad, sad story of how close we all are to the darkness....

Just thought of one, Carlisle Road.  Deffo a song about love for your family... I think it's interesting how the narrators wife or partner 'says nothing', which could mean she's supportive (and too upset for words) or hating for whatever happened, but the narrator still obviously loves his children...

Came home four, four-thirty, Emma was waiting up for me
News chanel drone on the TV, her arms clasped around her knee
She looked up but said nothing
I went up to the kids bedroom, touched their sleeping faces
Wondered how I could protect them
 Wondered how to protect them

I do like lyrics that invite you to hang on your own personal interpretation...

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Love Songs yet. It's full of longing." Please believe like I still believe the best is yet to come"

Agree with Master Ray about Carlisle Road

I also think that Afternoon Song has a romantic feel to it, and Orange Tree Roads

...here goes...some are for the gentleness of the music, others are for the lyrics...

11 Years
Marry The Sea
Paekakariki Beach
Caslen (no vocals version)
Big Blue
and, maybe, Autumn

Yep, this definitely fits the bill with lyrics like;

"On the back-lanes down to the sea we pulled to the side of the road
Danced together in the headlights beam to the songs on the radio
Cheek to cheek "

I'm pretty sure I remember this as being the story from the man himself.  Maybe in the song notes include in the Anthology?

It's the first verse that leads me to interpret it like that;

"Pushing up on Carlisle Road into the seething shadows
Through the plastic visor - a hail of broken kerbstone
Fire-lit faces, all the noise - so much hatred
What I remember thinking - I can't believe this is happening
All I remember thinking..."

Carlisle Road

The song:
The song "describes the aftermath of the 2001 race riots in Bradford from the point of view of a riot cop coming home in the early hours, still unable to believe what he has witnessed, standing over his children's beds and wondering how he will ever be able to protect them from the world."
- Source: Cathi Unsworth in 3 am Magazine -

NMA at their most romantic is Live.
No amount of playing songs to someone whos not keen will work (in my humble opinion)
My wife was never a real fan despite me playing NMA songs almost daily.
Took her to a few gigs, she stood at the back or side of the venue, still never really got them.
Did a few more gigs and got her to stand at the front and told her to watch Justin, she turned to me last year at the end of the gig in Hannover smiled and said "I get it now"
And now shes loves them.

for what it's worth, so late in the game....

romance...?  the closest i can come, myself and very, very personally-speaking, is Caslen....

there's a depth of beauty in that, for me, with and without lyrics, that makes it one of the most expressive song justin's yet written.

for me, that's a stop-and-put-my-head-down-and-feel-it moment.

youtube.com/watch?v=xU69c4kqOsU

romance, as a dance, as a moment in time.

Perhaps Caslen is the only solo song written by Nelson and later added lyrics by Justin official released ?

For me it is "Sooner or later" - bittersweet  romantic

You're terrific, Guillaume! :D  Thanks for mentioning that crucial bit of NMA/JS musical trivia. :)
Do you have a clip of that somewhere?  You're awesome at sourcing and posting videos. 8)

I wasn't around when this thread was originally created.  Was off here for seven difficult years.  Anyway, this is an extremely interesting topic. :)

She doesn't like NMA?  Dump her!  Immediately!

lol, Master Ray's kidding here, but I actually would let her go, gently of course.  NMA/JS mean far too much to me, that if I was with someone who couldn't stomach NMA/JS' music or gigs, I wouldn't even consider pursuing... no matter how hot, sexy, or great they are at (insert sought after + preferred physical activity here). ;)

I'd love to hear from those of you here, for whom converting others has worked, and from those of you who were able to win over your significant others OR your significant other won you over, got you into loving NMA/JS' music / gigs.  Please, be specific = songs, etc.

 1.  Exactly, what worked for you?

 2.  What didn't work?  Why?

 3.  Did you take them to a gig first or did you share NMA/JS recordings with them first?

 4.  How long did it take to win them or you over?  Could be the amount of time or number of songs or gigs it took.

 5.  Does your significant other ever hassle or criticize you at all, about NMA/JS' music or going to more than one NMA/JS gig?  If you answered yes, how do you both work things out, deal with it?

The questions are open to anyone and everyone.  Hope to hear from whomever cares to answer, share helpful tips.  Cheers! :)
