Bob Marley

The clash
Saw them many, many times. Saw them at the peak of their powers when they played their legendary shows in Times Square in New York City. They were one of the great live bands that ever existed. Echo and the Bunnymen were the best live band I ever did see, but The Clash sure were not too shabby. Passion, aggressive energy, and fun. Great live band.
-
Well, The Clash and Joy Division would be on my list, as others have stated here, but beyond that... I've been to many hundreds of gigs over 30 years and I think I've seen pretty much everyone I wanted to. I mean, I like a lot of Queen stuff from the 70's but I don't feel any burning desire to go back in time and see them...
I can think of one single gig that I missed and regret it to this day, I think I've mentioned it before. When Shane McGowen left The Pogues they already had a UK tour booked so Joe Strummer stepped in on vocals. I bloody love The Pogues but McGowen, bless him, was a dodgy proposition at best in a live venue (I saw him when the Pogues reunited in the 2000's and, well, it wasn't the finest performance I've ever seen, to say the least... :-\ )
But Strummer, fronting a great band and singing those great songs.. HOW IN THE NAME OF FLIPPING BLOODY CRIKEY DID I PASS THAT ONE UP? At Liverpool Royal Court as well, a long gone venue that is still one of my favourites?
I still regard myself as deserving a hard punch, right in the dick, for passing that one up. You're welcome to agree. ;D
-
- Joy Division

- David Bowie (1997)
- The Prodigy (1997)
- Rage Against the Machine (1994, 1997, 2000)

- David Bowie (1997)
- The Prodigy (1997)
- Rage Against the Machine (1994, 1997, 2000)
This is a great addendum to this thread. We should all add one of these "I'm glad that I saw" to our posts.
I'm glad that I saw:
1. Public Image Ltd. - saw them with Keith Levene on guitar!
2. Prince - he ain't around anymore and if you never saw him, you missed out on the greatest live performer in history
3. Liquid Liquid - you may not know the name, but you sure know their iconic bassline. "White Lines." That legendary song sampled a Liquid Liquid bassline. I actually saw that band play that bassline live...before they were ripped off by Grandmaster Flash/Melle Mel and Duran Duran.
4. The Fall - saw the version with Brix. Best version of that band.
5. The Pretenders - saw the classic original lineup before those two guys (James Honeyman Scott and Pete Farndon) died.
-

I'm suprised Nivana are on so many lists here.
How did you miss them? They played loads of gigs in the UK. I remember seeing them at The Reading Festival twice.

I think Shush mentioned that he had a ticket for them at Nottingham Rock City but couldn't make it for some reason or another (I might have that wrong, sorry mate if so!)... but just because a band played a lot in your home country doesn't mean that you would automatically have gone to see them! Many reasons might ensue as to why you didn't (lack of money for one, certain personal circumstances for another), in fact the idea that they played so often might put the idea in your head that 'ah, well, I'll catch them next time...' which turned into 'damn, there was NO next time...' :-[

.
I never saw them either. And I had my reasons.
I was really bitten by that grunge music. Loved it. I saw Pearl Jam and Soundgarden in concert, yet had no desire to see Nirvana. I had all their records, loved those records, but the idea of seeing them live never appealed to me. I kind of knew in advance what it would be. Just a loud, sloppy mess. They were a live band who believed that a sonic assault would win over concert goers. By all accounts I have found that assessment to be correct. Nirvana did not deliver deep emotional renditions of their tunes. On their unplugged show they did, but watch any live video of their shows. Just sophomoric performances. "Oh, we are loud and raw...we must be good, no?" I pass on that.

I'm in the same boat regarding Husker Du who are my all time faves. The played Manchester in June 1987 but on the same night I'd been invited to a wedding reception so I though, I'll see them next time round, but to my horror they split up in January 1988 so it wasn't to be, totally gutted indeed. I have seen Sugar, Bob solo and with band and also Grant Hart solo but it'snot quite the same.

I liked Husker Du at the time but there were other bands (such as NMA) that I was more obsessed with. I just figured I'd see them on the next tour which never happened. Could have seen them in Hamburg in 87 on the Warehouse... tour. My mates went and were buzzing for weeks afterwards. I got to appreciate them much more as time went on. I like all of Bob Mould's other incarnations but he never really matched that raw sound of anger and desperation as he did with Husker Du.

Heck, there's another one to add to my 'grateful' list... Motorhead. They were superb. And, without a doubt, the loudest band I ever heard. I've never stood directly in front of a jet engine but I can only imagine it was something like a live Motorhead gig... ;D

Well, they did have a reputation to uphold :-) One of those bands that I always liked but kinda took for granted because they always seemed to be touring.
-
Most of these are bands/artists that I was just barely of legal age to see at the time.
Without further ado and in no particular order - wish I'd seen...
Paul Raven era Killing Joke
Keith Moon and John Entwistle era of Who
John Bonham era Led Zeppelin
Jeff Buckley
Nina Simone
Leonard Cohen
Ofra Haza
Jeff Healey
Robb Heaton era New Model Army
Taylor Hawkins era Foo Fighters
Pete Shelley era Buzzcocks
Keith Whittaker both with & without Demics
Christina Amphlett while with Divinyls
Haydain Neale while with JackSOUL
Chris Cornell era Soundgarden & Audioslave
Michael Hutchence era INXS
SO glad I got to see them, while they were still here...
Aretha Franklin
Conway Savage era Bad Seeds
Chris Acland era Lush
Dolores O'Riordan while with Cranberries
David Bowie (well, almost... the long story is in these pages, somewhere... ok, just found it here (http://board.newmodelarmy.org/index.php?topic=9350.msg169783#msg169783))
absolutely REGRET seeing...
Prick
Nine Inch Nails (long story (http://board.newmodelarmy.org/index.php?topic=9350.msg169783#msg169783), both played the same bill as the Bowie gig I was at)
Had no interest what-so-ever in seeing...
Nirvana (yeah, was never into them, well Kurt Cobain's general style, to be quite frank. Foo Fighters, on the other hand, I'll take them over Nirvana any day! Love the them!!
-
'Prick'? ???
Good call on Lush, massively under-rated band... yes I did see them a couple of times, back in the day...
-
'Prick'? ???
Yeah, Prick (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prick_(band)). They were on the same bill as Nine Inch Nails and David Bowie. It was THE worst concert experience of my entire life! Not because of the bands, but because of a number of Nine Inch Nail fans. Other than that, if you've never been into industrial music, you won't be missing much.
-
Crass - controversial maybe but would have good to see in there prime

Same thinking here although I did get to see Steve Ignorant's Slice Of life in 2014 in a local town to me and he did perform some Crass songs, but it still wasn't quite the same.

Genuinely never heard of that band! I will avoid!

Top of the list for me has to be seeing the Who around 1970-71; a recently deceased family friend happened to be in Leeds on the evening ofFeb 13th 1970...
Led Zeppelin about the same time would be another band I'd love to have seen live, or Space Ritual era Hawkwind.
A little futher back, and oh to have been in the Grande Ballroom in Detroit on 31 October 1968 as the MC5 kicked out the jams.
Moving back in time, seeing the original line-up of the Skatalites with Don Drummond would have been awesome.
Back into the 1970s, Van Der Graaf Generator about 1975 is something I'd love to have seen but I did get to see the classic line-up on the reformation tour in 2005. Would also have loved to see Thin Lizzy in their prime before the drink and drugs took too much of a toll. AC/DC with Bon Scott likewise.
From the punk era, seeing the Ruts would be top of the list though experiencing Throbbing Gristle in the flesh would be another good one.
The classic Motorhead line-up - I was always jealous of my older sister's ex boyfriend who was at Port Vale festival in 1981 and saw not only Motorhead at their peak, but Ozzy Osbourne with Randy Rhoads on lead guitar! I saw them in 1990, pretty sure that was the loudest gig I've ever seen but still would love to have seen them in the Fast Eddie days.
On a quieter front, would liked to have seen Nic Jones before the devastating car crash that ended his career.
Moving on into the era when I was going to gigs, I'm still kicking myself for not going to see Mudhoney or the Neph. I did see Nirvana twice but I didn't rate them as a live band, it felt like watching a band practive. Pearl Jam were a damn sight better live...
Likewise, I really should have gone to see David "Honeyboy" Edwards when I had the chance - far too late now!
On the other hand, for things I did get to see that retain their "wow" for me... Naz Nomad and the Nightmares (the Damned's alter ego band) at the Leadmill in Sheffield, the Pixies secret gig at Scarborough Futurist in summer 1991 (they'd been rehearsing there prior to their European tour and did a warm-up), NMA's low-key gig at Buckley Tivoli in 1996 (last time I saw them with Rob :'(), the Levellers with the Moonflowers supporting, Skyclad on their first tour. Happy days...
