Cain and Abel
« on: March 02, 2014, 05:39:05 PM »
The ghost of Cain in everything that we do (Western Dream and the album title), Arm in arm come Abel and Cain, walking down to the sea (Sun on Water), We never could decide on who would be Abel and who would be Cain (Seven times).....

Why do you think Cain and Abel keeps coming up in the lyrics?  For story and some other lyrical reference points see:

That`s a very interesting question.

One thing that brings to my mind is that the relationship with Cain & Abel reminds about the hero path and contests that Joseph Campbell discussed in Hero With Thousand Faces. There are several very old myths in history (Gilgamesh for example) that tells a story about a hero and a champion. Another one is favoured due to his/her achievements and feats, another one has lesser favour but cleaner morale. First one`s lust for power becomes clear when they contest, and the other gets more followers... Joseph Campbell tried to point out there is a same basic structure with the path that can be found in different cultures around the world, in most of theist pantheons, primitive cultures and children`s stories.

Well, we know JS reads a lot and it would be a wonder if he hasn`t heard about the book. But all in all, I think there`s a certain amount of a mundane drama with Cain and Abel`s story that brings a lot of imagination to us every one.

It might be because the Cain and Abel story are so familiar to so many that there is an immediate understanding of the reference. It helps one to understand the message of the song.
I'm geared towards the averagae rather than the exceptional.

I'm no religious/cultural scholar, I guess I'd say I've a broad but shallow knowledge. I think the story of Cain & Abel is probably a fable that describes a universal experience. You sum up that up very nicely Rusco.

The idea of conflict between 2 sides of the same coin seems to be the thrust of these archetypal stories and maybe Cain & Abel is a useful "shorthand" for drawing these themes out in a songs story?

I really like listening to Joseph Campbell.  The guy puts a lot of stuff in perspective.
