Recommend me a good book.
« on: November 10, 2015, 08:45:19 PM »
Hey guys, I'm after a bit of advice - I've read every book I own (and that's quite a few!) until I know them more or less by heart.  I'm looking for some suggestions as to what books you think are a really good read.  I'm not worried about them being complicated, off-the-wall or just plain weird.

I've enjoyed books by the likes of Neal Stephenson, Iain Banks, David Nicholls, Patrick Rothfuss, Terry Pratchett, Derek Robinson, Herman Mellville.....

Go on - what should I read, what's it about and why should I read it?

Cheers,

JR

If you're interested in 20th century military history, Antony Beevor is mesmerising. 'Stalingrad' is a fascinating book as is 'Berlin'. I also found "Inside The Third Reich" by Albert Speer utterly fascinating. He is an apologist for a terrifying and terrible period of history, but he was right at the heart of it all and I haven't read another first hand account of anybody so high up in such a horrifying regime.

Currently reading "We the drowned" by Carsten Jensen which I am really enjoying. If you liked Moby Dick you will enjoy this.

There's a classic review of Moby Dick on one of the literary websites and I don't know if it's taking the Mick or not. The review is along the lines of, " This is just a rip off of Jaws!"

Hi again Johnz,

Have just finished "We, The Drowned" and just thought I should say thanks very much for the recommendation, as I really enjoyed it.  It was a little weird (in a good way!) at the beginning, and as it got more straightforward as it progressed, it also became more horrific.

It's a great book, and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes an in-depth story.

Glad you liked it! I finished it a little while ago and really enjoyed it. Yes, it's a bit gruesome at times but gets more and more compelling as it goes on.

I read the Gardeners World magazine yesterday.
That was quite interesting.
 :)
My eye sight went a bit bonky with the brain tumour but has settled fine now.
Haven't read a novel or any fiction for ages, it's been mostly text books related to my college work but now that has finished I have a whole heap of books to get through.

Those we left behind by Stewart Neville is top of the pile.
Whooosshhhh !!!

A recommendation from me

Coffin Road or The Black House both by Peter May, he has many too choose from

Someone I've just started reading  ( Coffin Road is a recent release and it was recommended on Radio 2 so I thought I'd give it a go, then read Black House)

Black House is part 1 of a trilogy

Is is a crime to believe in something different?

I meant what I said at the time that I said it

got into Bernard Cornwell the first time i watched Sharpe..just finished the second book of the Warlord Chronicles trilogy and can heartily recommend it..love history, especially the dark ages and Arthurian legend..the things we've done to each other over the years..always recommend making time for some of the classics too..wish to gods kids today would understand the benefits of a liberal education instead of burying their faces in the latest app...:)
