Think you're missing Knievel's point. It seems it would actually be cheaper for him to pay someone a few bucks to burn and send him a CD instead of downloading (data charges and whatnot).
I have to admit, I've never gotten the bootleg thing. I have a few from NMA, Peter Gabriel, and Joseph Arthur, but only a handful. I tend to prefer the official live albums. I know that boots have gotten way better over the years (especially with sound board recordings) and I know a lot of bands record and burn immediately so that fans can have a CD to take home with them. I'm sure if NMA did that I'd pay for the service and materials (10 bucks sounds reasonable to me for that). There are a number of bands that will sell you a series of official boots of a concert series so you can have every show. That's way too much listening for me.
