A Summer's Tale
« on: July 29, 2018, 10:28:06 AM »
I thought for a while about it, mainly because this seems to be a very mixed and not a purely music festival with many activities and workshops etc. to take part in, and i don't really know if this is where i fit in, it could be overflown by hipsters  :o ;-)
and new model army is only playing for one hour..so a big price to pay to mainly go there for the band.

but then i decided to just make myself a present and book the weekend, buy a good tent and go camping alone for two days in a beautiful park. and now i'm excited and looking forward to it.

so is maybe anyone from here also going?

Beach Paaartyyyyy! 8)

this was a very exceptional gig because of the location and the stage. there was sand in front of the stage and the whole atmosphere was like a beach party. minutes before the gig i sat down in the sand with plenty of space, kids playing ball next to me and only a few people really waited for nma but then it got crowded when they began.
i think the setlist was something like this:
stormclouds
march in september
winter
angry planet
born feral
no rest
wwtg
devils bargain
purity
poison street
vagabonds
i love the world
ever tried. ever failed. no matter.
try again. fail again. fail better.

Sounds like you had a nice time, mate.  You seeing the lads any time else this year?

Yes, it was a very hot and very unusual concert, but it was a very powerful and fantastic gig. It even felt a bit "darker", maybe because of the contrast to the light, mainstream summer-beach atmosphere that was around and so something like no rest or angry planet had a special feeling to it. but also devils bargain i found very unusual powerful and it seemed to last longer than before, maybe the violin which fit perfectly to it, made it so wonderful. or maybe the beers i drank before just kicked in, because of the sudden dancing and the hot sun above you;-)

I will go to cologne and amsterdam in december, already got the tickets and a hotel in amsterdam..

Cool.  I'm limited to UK gigs at the moment, weighing them up (although Nottingham is an absolute must, it's always the highlight of my Christmas!), I'm determined to make it to Koln or Amsterdam one day... maybe next year...  ;)

Great gig, great energy from the band ... it was nice to witness, how more and more people in the crowd who might have heard them 20 years ago started dancing and singing along as the concert went on ... and i really appreciate the "courage" of the band to NOT play green&gray and 51st state in this setting ;)

@Master Ray
i lived for about 12 years in cologne, so the christmas gigs there were always a no brainer for me, then i had to move to hamburg and guess what, they played in the markthalle here and i couldn't get a ticket. but i managed to go to bremen last year, which is not far away from hamburg.
got some friends in cologne, so staying there is cheap. and after my notv experience, travelling far to see nma, feeling more vagabondy again;-) this time i thought "what the heck-just add amsterdam also." i cannot afford it, but i already bought the tickets!;-)

@arnearne
from a manager point of view i could have been something like this:
"so guys, out here is a crowd of young parents, many children, some fans, most people will have heard your name and some of them may even know 51st state. it's hot, ist sand, its a beach party! 50 people are in front of the stage, the rest ist relaxing, so go out there, play the nice songs and every hit that you have...well sorry, then play your known songs...start with 51st state and then end with 51st state."
ever tried. ever failed. no matter.
try again. fail again. fail better.

My best mates Dad lives just outside of Bonn, not too far from Koln obviously, so it's entirely possible I might make it over there one year...

thanx fot sharing!
a very good article, nailing the atmosphere of the festival which is trying to be an allround pleaser and a little arbitrary, and new model army bringing the passion, playing with fire.

There seems to be an audio of the concert available online by now:

I have not heard all of it yet, just a few seconds, sounds good.

"like a blind (wo)man sees for the very first time"  :)

Heard the full recording by now, I think it is very good, just as I remembered it.
