For those of you that don't tread the facebook water here's the post from earlier today:
Carnival Redux
Tickets (and T-shirts) are selling very well for our Global Gathering on 24th October. We will be giving more details of this broadcast very soon. Meanwhile we have had a separate project in the pipeline...
CARNIVAL – REDUX
We have always felt that Carnival was the one album where the recording, mixing and mastering didn’t bring the end result close to what we had originally intended in the writing. So when our label, Edel, declared their interest in licensing and reissuing the album (with others to follow), we discovered four associated tracks (B-sides and unreleased songs) to add to it and saw an opportunity to ‘reimagine’ the album as a whole.
We are aware that it is very dangerous for any band to ‘go back’ (and especially unusual for us) – so we made one absolute rule, that we wouldn’t re-record anything and we’d ask Lee Smith, who mixed From Here and Winter, to remix it using only the original multi-tracks, without too much involvement from us. Some songs have changed very little, others quite a lot. And to our minds, this has worked well and has enhanced the album’s principle qualities, particularly the wealth of original musical ideas, at last arranged in a sonically satisfying way to bring out the power, energy and inventiveness of the record. In the spirit of this ‘reimagining’, we have altered the order of the songs a little to include the additions - while our artist, Joolz Denby, has recreated the cover artwork in a wholly new original version.
The album will be available as a limited edition media-book pack and on high quality white double-vinyl. We hope you will enjoy it.

Ordered ! Just a question, is the vinyl will give also the full album to download (I assume so but ...) and if yes, will it be upon receiving the album on 20/11 or sooner ? thanks a lot, great idea (I have to say that High would probably be the other album that would need the same treatment, always felt those two albums were not as good in term of mixing and mastering as the others)

Brutal!
I'm Awestruck!
You've got to be kidding...
This new mix of Island is: In!Your!Face!
Wow....wow! Just listened to it, right now my heart is still beating... Such an energy.. you know that song so well and then you get this new "version" or mix...what a great experience i just had listening loudly to that song alone in my living room..
This is different...so great!
:D
....sorry;-) really got carried away by this. i had a few more listens, and for me, this is a new new model army track. well, it's like a new track for me. the excitement....
there was so much going on in my brain while listening to that. such a big impact, like a drip of water in the mouth of someone almost dying of thirst in the desert...
Love this! Can't wait for the whole album Redux!!!!!!!
-
I'm thrilled! Especially to see Stoned, Fired and FUll of Grace get a studio version (I assume) release. Also tempted by the suggestion that more albums will be re released. I'd sure like to see Turn Away get a studio version release as well. I'm going to wait for the full release listen, but early reports are promising.
-
I can't wait for this one! Normally remixed re-releases, from whatever band releases them, are something I avoid, but this sounds like a good 'un.
I'm sure I mentioned this before on another thread, way back in time, but Carnival was an album I rather under-regarded at the time and came to like far more in recent years. But the track listing of this new version (Stoned, Fired And Full Of Grace! Rumour And Rapture 1650! Caslen Christmas, whateverthefook that is! ;D) looks great.
Consider my order placed!

Most humble greetings, all ye, me lovelies... 8)
I. I. I, I, I am completely flabbergasted, dumbfounded, speechless, and utterly shocked - in a frightening, yet weirdly thrilling, exciting, but most comforting way - to learn of this highly unconventional NMA music news, update. This seriously needs a lot of digesting, ruminating, thought pondering, on my part. I am in a state of trying to grasp, understand NMA/JS' will, intent and reason(s) behind such a colossal - potentially, incredibly perilous, though remarkably commendable - and fervently - most courageous NMA musical endeavour, thus far, to date.
There is so much for us to mull over, about it all... especially for me to contemplate, etc. "Carnival" is, for me, the singular NMA album that flipped my world on its head and changed so much of me, such an integral part of me, my perception, my way of thinking, my way of living and my way of navigating through this and my world. The world as I knew it, saw it, grew to understand it, was largely shaped by this very special NMA album. And now, "Carnival - Redux" will inevitably reconfigure and reshape, tweak-up my world(s), etc. at least once more, if not perpetually. This is precisely where I am enraptured, yet frightened to the core, really.
Going back to make things right, correct, tweak or touch-up the past, is always a very delicate, critically risky, and extremely tricky thing to master, do... I imagine. It takes some serious balls of steel, I think, to even contemplate such an attempt, let alone follow through with it. Meddling with the past could and can potentially, seriously fcuk up everything, in the now and all, if anything, that is up ahead. NMA/JS et al... You noblemen, musical soldiers of worth, good, truth, and valour are completely deserving of utmost reverence, astoundingly astonishing! Fearless! Stronger and braver than any other(s) I ever, ever known. You will do extremely well, just and true, indeed and otherwise. Keep faith. Do not fear or doubt in each other, nor in and of yourselves especially, ever... d'you hear? Use the force (yeah, that was a Star Wars reference, just in case folk didn't get that), innate within each and everyone of you, and things will work out. You'll see. :)
I haven't even heard a single note off "Carnival - Redux" yet. But I have to say, you gentlemen put the album in truly great hands! Mr. Smith did a phenomenal job on both NMA albums, "Winter" and "From Here". Extremely pleased to learn Mr. Smith has been entrusted to care and handle the goods, from "Carnival" as well. As for me, I'm going to wait 'til November to listen to any part of it. I want the moment to be as, if not even moreso, special than when I first heard the initial, original version of the album. I'm going to make an event and thorough experience out of it, listening to "Carnival - Redux", and wait for the whole package to arrive, come. I might even wait 'til late December. But when the feelin's right, I'm gonna to take it in, and take it whole... in all it's splendour, just, as every NMA release should be. xxxxx
Deepest thanks to you Mr. Savage, for posting this incredible news here and to NMA for emailing me about it too! You wonderful people made my day, night, week!! Thank you SO very, very much! :D
Seriously, I love you people! Thank you. :)
Now, if only John the shop elf would just get back to me about getting Blackballed's latest CD in the shop so I can order everything altogether, would be beyond fantastic! Wink. Wink. Nudge. Nudge. ;)

Ordered ! Just a question, is the vinyl will give also the full album to download (I assume so but ...) and if yes, will it be upon receiving the album on 20/11 or sooner ?
I sure hope there will be a digital download version of "Carnival - Redux" included with the purchase of the Vinyl version. Oh crap, :-\ oh 'GOD', please let there be? Yeah, now I'm worried. ' Cause I don't play my vinyl. Hardly ever, actually. These days I buy vinyl purely for the esthetics of it. I can't stand the skipping, snap, crackle and popping of it, as it plays. Not to mention, having to get up to flip the side or change the LP. I buy it for the artwork, and coloured vinyl, really. That's all I miss about vinyl. Especially coming from someone like me, who tends to listen to songs and or on loop for hours and hours. And no, doing this doesn't kill the songs for me, it actually solidifies my love and appreciation for them, the songs. I actually DO get something new out of every single new listen. Fcuk drugs 'n nicotine. Music... sHe is my heroin(e), my elixir, my ultimate trip 'n tipple! I'm just wired this way, been so since I was a wee schmuck... soz. It's just in my blood. 8)
great idea (I have to say that High would probably be the other album that would need the same treatment, always felt those two albums were not as good in term of mixing and mastering as the others)
Whoa! Valstar Superstar, I love "High". :) But if NMA/JS ever feel the incredible urge, want, need, intense desire to resurrect that one as well, that would be totally cool with me too! I LOVE multiple versions of any NMA/JS songs. Truth be told, the more, the better, as far as I'm concerned. Keeps the entire NMA/JS repertoire fresh, vital, current, stimulating, thriving, alive! 8)

Ohhh, I totally get the thirst-quenching aspect of it all. Especially where NMA/JS are concerned. Fcukin' hell-yeah, I do! :P :P :P :P :P
Missed your presence 'round here. Great to see you back surfing these sacred waters with us, Cthulhu! :)
Genuinely hoping that things are going well with and for you, Klaus. Enjoy the album. :)

Hello Willard, :)
100% with you on all three great points! What a terrific time to be following NMA's work, eh? Hope you'll come back to post your thoughts once you here the full album, would love to hear / read about it. Same goes for everyone else surfing, floating, posting here. It's what makes this place so special... it's all of you! :)
How's it goin' Master Ray? Well I hope. :)
I'm thinking "Caslen (Christmas)" is the lyricized version of Caslen. Perhaps it's the version that appears on the US version of the BD3 EP ? ??? If it is, it's quite beautiful. I find it very moving.... but then I would as I really love the softer quieter side of NMA/JS' works, just as much as the harder stuff. Hope you enjoy the record. I'll be lookin' forward to seeing you post about it, at some point down the road, as well. That'd be really great. :)

CD ordered, really looking forward to this.............i am a big fan of Carnival.

I'm sure I mentioned this before on another thread, way back in time, but Carnival was an album I rather under-regarded at the time and came to like far more in recent years
Exactly the same ! And the same with High for me, that’s why I mentioned it :)
I sure hope there will be a digital download version of "Carnival - Redux" included with the purchase of the Vinyl version. Oh crap, :-\ oh 'GOD', please let there be? Yeah, now I'm worried. I have to say I have a REALLY decent sound system (had to wait to be more than 45 to finally be able to buy what I dreamed about in my 16s, will probably never be able to do it again if it breaks ;)), and I was only listening to digital music for a long time. Then I plugged back my record player, and when I put a digital song (with a good DAC for digital to analog conversion) and the same song on vinyl, there’s no way you can prefer the digital version (not just mp3, cd also). The sound of vinyls is way much warmth, and the « space » is much more occupied, don’t know how to explain that, you feel that the room is actually filled by the sound, that never happens with digital music (but I still mostly listen too digital music on a daily basis, it’s more convenient, just not as good :))
-
Great news. Never been one of my favourite albums, although there are some excellent songs on it. A new take on it will be interesting.
-
I`m a fan of Carnival - Red Earth!!!
So it`s a good news to get a redux with some other songs I like and collected in different versions :)
-
A Vinyl Version, this is really great news. Hope to see more of the albums never been released in the best available Technology —> Vinyl. Love it😍.
-
Looking forward to this - the album never really grabbed me in the same way as others, so looking forward to seeing if the change in track listing, re-mixes etc changes my mind and hooks me. Still have some of my favouite NMA songs on (Prayer Flags, Bluebeat, BD3), and will be good to hear version of Stoned....
-
HA ! I have all NMA albums on my laptop but when I moved abroad some nine years ago, all original albums stayed behind in a loving care of my ex-boyfriend. So, besides buying new albums, I've every now and then ordered CDs of older albums, just to have them for myself with cover art and lyrics and everything... and of course, I just f*****g ordered Carnival CD earlier this month, now after a week staying away from work&internet, I come here and there's news about this re-issue...... FML seriously ;D If I wouldn't be rather 'financially challenged' at the moment, I'd order this one also but.........................
-
Pre-ordering the Redux version also challenged me financially quite a bit. I calculated and came to the conclusion that the price is almost exactly the amount of what i had left for the month. So since some days now i'm totally broke, my account says i have 1€ left to spent 8) Before ordering, i filled up my tank and that's it. I work as a cook, so i get my food there. So about one week to go until the wage comes in...
But the pleasure of hearing Island was totally worth it!
-
Payday tomorrow, so I'll order mine then with T shirt. Be interesting to hear the new twists, although seriously....NO-ONE has the power to make Red Earth better!!!!
-
I have to say I have a REALLY decent sound system, had to wait to be more than 45 to finally be able to buy what I dreamed about in my 16s, will probably never be able to do it again if it breaks. ;)
Man, Valstar Superstar, that sounds sweet! :) Especially if you're able to play it loud, enough to get the walls breathing and the nails subtly popping out of the floor boards. Of course not to the point where your ears split / bleed or even every time you turn the stereo on, but just when you play anything from NMA. That'd be fcukin' ace!
It's nowhere near the real deal of an actual live gig, no, but with great equipment (which you've already got) and proper positioning of everything; the stereo, the speakers, the furniture - preferably in a pretty decent sized room, with good or even better ceiling height, at least 2 parallel windows (or one really big centered one), very little furniture and minimal fabric in the room - so that you can coax a hint or a whisper of an echo, in the room that you keep your stereo equipment in... then it would come pretty fcukin' close to the feeling like the real deal. Especially, especially when you close your eyes, sit back, or better yet lie face-up, back to the floor, in the unlit room, eyes closed, arms and legs spaced comfortably apart, fully relaxed and ready to receive, take in the sound, soak up the music. Listen not only with your ears, but with your entire body and the rest of your senses. 'Are you receiving' ? 8)
The fluidity, when every aspect of the set up, if done correctly, is met, should wash over you, resonate through every inch of your body, from the tips of your toes to the top of your head, 'til every single hair follicle on your entire body stands on end, rises, awakens. Be warned, it's very addictive. Best thing though, is that it's a clean rush, fcukin' awesome 100% clean way to trip! No additional chemicals needed, just the ones naturally already housed within your body, the right mind-set / frame of mind and phenomenal record collection, and you're there! It's better at night though. Sound travels better later in the day, in the dark, for some, unbeknownst to me, reason. Oh, and don't forget to take your socks off, rest of clothing... whatever floats your boat. But feet should definitely be bare.
I'm 100% positive of this. I know it sounds really, really lame, corny, and cheesy, lol, but forget the bedroom! Well, unless that's where your stereo is kept, located. But if it's not in the bedroom, then the room that houses the stereo equipment would be the one room in the entire house I'd make it a point to Feng Shui. It's so worth it, absolutely fcukin' amazing! Incredibly rewarding, highly pleasurable, full-on, thorough listening experience! This has been pretty much my stereo set up since the early 1980's. I'd never even heard of Feng Shui, back then. On April 8th, 2016 even Billboard magazine wrote about how to Feng Shui your stereo setup. Folk can check out the article and diagrams here (https://www.billboard.com/articles/news/magazine-feature/7325364/home-sound-system-setup-advice). Enjoy it... or not, lol. ;)

Totally with you on every point of which you raised Valstar Superstar. Though I'm pretty sure think you meant to type "that never happens with digital music", instead of "analog music", am I correct? ??? Vinyl is definitely warmer sounding, for sure. The audible, spatial aspect of it is much wider, fuller, richer, fluid sounding as well. My personal issue with vinyl is how to keep it from retaining so much fcukin' static. All that snap, crackle and popping really irks me, to no end. So much so, that it gets in the way of me enjoying the music. For me, it's the equivalent of scraping one's fingernails down a chalkboard. It's foreign sound, additional, unwelcomed noise that often times, completely wrecks the entire vibe of a song, :-\ especially when playing softer, quieter, moody, ambient pieces of music.
I am convinced it has everything to do with the record sleeves, turntable mats, record needle and vinyl cleaning brush and solution. So what I need to know from every single person here who swears by vinyl 1000% is...
1. How do you care for and clean your stereo equipment? Namely the mat and record needle?
2. What about the vinyl itself, how do you eliminate the static, dust, dirt, etc. from the actual records?
3. What other tips and tricks have you picked up along the way about vinyl record and stereo equipment maintenance? Details please... if possible.
I actually turned to youtube last year and found out that some collectors actually WASH their vinyl records with water! When I saw them spin their vinyl in water, I was like, WTF? :o I'm not sure I want to risk doing that to my vinyl, at this point. Any tips or advice, from anybody would be greatly appreciated. :)
I still mostly listen to digital music on a daily basis, it’s more convenient, just not as good. :)
That's pretty much all I'm listening to right now, as well. It's too convenient, in a lot of ways, actually. But I can't help myself, I'm a music junkie to the core. :-[ I still buy CDs, LPs, music DVDs, and even cassettes. I'll continue to do so for as long bands / artists keep manufacturing them. I would honestly hate it if one day, there would no longer be the option of buying a physical, tangible album release. I do fear though, that the younger generations especially, are going to kill CDs, LPs, DVDs, etc. It's already begun... and streaming is the culprit, unfortunately. And I sense that it's going to happen too soon. :-[
A Vinyl Version, this is really great news. Hope to see more of the albums never been released in the best available Technology —> Vinyl. Love it 😍.
Greetings FCAndre, :)
Me too, I'd like to complete my NMA/JS catalogue on vinyl as well as on CD too. FCAndre, I don't suppose you have a couple of minutes to spare, to share your tips and ticks on how to properly clean and maintain vinyl records, and deal with static, etc.? ???
Anyone else here, :-\ able to add their input or help? Thanking you in advance. :)
-
Sorry, forget to check in a long time, and no email to warn for a response, so ... :)

You're absolutely right, I corrected the mistake :)

1. The mat is the mat of a fanboy, namely a NMA mat, nothing special here hehe https://shop.newmodelarmy.org/other-stuff/product/518-thunder-and-consolation-lp-mat
2. When I'm not to lazy (I know, it's bad), I use a brush like this https://www.stars-music.com/enova-hifi-brosse-antistatic-vinyle-bva-20_156314.html and a little brush for the needle (the needle being the one that needs cleaning the most).
3. Nothing else. I have to say, I immediately putted back all classical vinyl in a box when tried them after plugging back a record player. The cracks were not bearable on the quieter parts. I will DEFINITELY go for my digital library every time I listen to classical. Else, I really don't mind the cracks. Like my Joy Division's Unknown Pleasure, bought in 86, that (like all my records in those days) was outside of any cover or inner sleeve when not playing. Today, it cracks SOOOOO MUCH, but I still prefer to play this one than the remastered 180g version I bought recently. Or a very old Ray Charles (previously owned by my mum) that cracks like hell, but it goes well with it, so no problems. Strangely, that was the absence of cracks that made me love CDs at first, and now, I love those ... (except for classical as previously stated, you cant enjoy Bach cello suites or Mozart requiem with cracks, no way !). With that say, I had to get rid of many records, sadly, because my 80s way of storage made cracks that now makes the needle jump :'(.
I also bought proper inner sleeve to replace the one in plain paper or card box when needed, nothing fancy, just regular paper with antistatic plastic inside.
I've seen those "records bath machines", seems a bit over the top for me :). One of my best friend is constantly spraying a mix of water and alcohol over his records WHILE he plays them ... I don't know, will not do that, but he seems happy with it, and as he have to measure is record collection in actual meters instead of number of records due to his collection being sooooooooooo large, I assume he knows what he's doing (and he claims to have a lot of statics because of his house, don't ask me why, never understood :))
I still mostly listen to digital music on a daily basis, it’s more convenient, just not as good. :)

I do fear though, that the younger generations especially, are going to kill CDs, LPs, DVDs, etc. It's already begun... and streaming is the culprit, unfortunately. And I sense that it's going to happen too soon. :-[
Younger generations need to be properly educated about how to listen to music ! :). At home, I have playlists with my kids names that I started as soon as they were able to express themselves about what they liked, so around 2 (now they are 6 and 9 years old) . When they like something we listen too, they just say "hey dad, can you add this song to my favorites ?". Then, I bought them amps and CD players (used one, you can find wonders, my son have an Harman Kardon amp from 1983 found for 40€), and burned them around 150 albums each (of their choice, except for Joy Division were they had no choice about it :)), with covers and titles printed. And if there was CD "bonuses", I removed them. Tried to show them that artists in general had to carefully craft an album song order (bonuses after R&R suicide on Ziggy Stardust ?? no f*****g way, silence is what you need after R&R suicide !). I thought of that reading Justin speaking about Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love". Now I'm happy to hear the music coming from their bedrooms, when my daughter plays the B 52's over and over or when my son is playing back a Metallica guitar solo for the 12th time in a row :) (and obviously when they play any NMA, I have some little happy smile ;)). The downfall is now my daughter also ask for stuff other kids are listening to at school, and sometimes when she plays those ... *cringe* :D But I like it that they starts to make their own mind about what to listen too (like I said for the Metallica solos, even if I'm not that much into Metal or guitar solos, or the "artists" my daughter ask for :D).
So ne Deezer or Spotify for those kids, no no no.

Never thought I'd be discussing record maintenance on here as I am a bit of a geek on this. For day to day I use one of these:-
https://www.ursa-major.eu
Which is significantly better than anything I have used in the past 35 years. I have special liners but don't use them unless the originals are really damaged/dirty, reason being is that I give the records a quick brush before each spin so what's the point. I use the same brush to gently brush the stylus too.
For really dirty records I send off to a company which uses one of these:-
https://www.audiodesksysteme.de/?page_id=5327
When they come back they are significantly quieter but not silent particularly at gig levels of volume where you will still get surface noise during the quieter bits. To manage expectations, you are never going to get digital levels of silence and surface noise so don't listen out for it, you can filter this out just like at a live gig for extraneous noise and disturbances.
in the early days when CD first came out and the demise of records seemed imminent, people were obsessing on signal to noise ratios and dynamic range and other numbers stuff rather than the music. In my view record players can bring more of the performance to the party than most DACs that I've ever heard and I've heard some pretty serious multi box DACs; my biggest tip to you 8 is to just enjoy the music and feel the performance.
Cheers
jc

Amen ! (sorry for the fun, I couldn't avoid it given your name, and your statement is so true ;))

Apparently without telling anyone - yet - NMA has released the next song for the upcoming Carnival Redux. :o
When I just opened the Amazon Music "Taufrisch Rock" Playlist, I found BD3 hidden in between!!
I suggest you take a look at the streaming service of your choice, lean back and enjoy. I know I am... 8)

First (sorry, german) reviews:
https://musicheadquarter.de/aktuelles/new-model-army-carnival-redux-erscheint-am-20-11/
(and Sonic Seducer mag nov. - no link, too much for typing it for me)
I`m waiting for the versions of the bonus songs and Red Earth ;)
-
And now I`ve found this (starting with www.newmodelarmy.org, not with a short jump to the forum link):
Global Gathering, BD3 Video & Carnival Update
We have been amazed at the response to our global live-stream concert on Saturday. We hoped that in making something genuinely live, visually unrehearsed and obviously a bit rough around the edges, we would get across some of the energy and spirit of a real gig. It was genuinely exciting and nerve-racking to make and this seems to have connected with everyone in these unreal and bleak times. There were 6200 live links and so we estimate a worldwide viewing audience of anything from 10-25,000.
The background to the whole event was also captured by WDR for a documentary film to be screened in December.
The stream has now moved to https://www.themill.tv/ where it will be available to watch in a pay-to-view format for a while.
MD Kit GG2020
Michael Dean would like to thank Vibe Drums, Code Drum Heads and Ice Stix
Marshall would like to thank Blackstar
And Justin would like to thank Dougie at Free Creeper and Ben Shand at Beej Guitar Repairs for resurrecting his previously destroyed acoustic guitars.
Now we move to the release of the redux of the Carnival album on November 20th. Today we have the re-release of the BD3 video, originally filmed by Matt Stanley on an extremely cold night in Bradford in the winter of 2005-6, and now with the newly mixed audio.
We are taking pre-orders for the book-pack album HERE
The limited edition double white vinyl HERE
Both are accompanied by a particularly beautiful brand new T-shirt design HERE
Stay well out there, everybody.

From Here - 40 Jahre New Model Army
No Rest For The Wicked“.
Die Leute fragen immer, was da schiefgelaufen sei.

I pray that came out ok and that no part of it came off offensive, 'cause google makes a lot of mistakes. This is what I typed in google that translated to the above message.
Hello lotus, :)
I wish I could read, write and speak German. It is one of my favourite languages, but one that is extremely difficult for me to learn. I had get help from google, to type this message. I hope google did a good job translating. I know there are a lot of errors. I hope google has not been rude or offensive. Thank you for sharing the good news about the NMA documentary. :)
I sincerely appreciate the effort you make communicating in English. :) I hope it is ok that I tried to communicate with you in German. ???

Hello 8,
thanks answering in German :)
English is easier to learn than German, but to my surprise Google works fine for your test - the only thing Google does not know:
If you write a friend or unknown mates here, you use 2. person singular "Du", not "Sie", Deine (not Ihre) - in English both is you and easier to handle
Here is the only place I have to try to write my thoughts in English, seldom have a chance to speak it, I`m happy, that I do remember a lot of lost words by reading a text ;D

Hi Lotus, :)
I'm really surprised to learn that Google translated the message as well as it did. There must be a lot of good German folks stepping in often, to make corrections to Google's efforts, in that department. You should see Google try to translate Italian! I almost pissed myself laughing! Google gets the sentiments all wrong, and comes off sounding very snobby, rude and even offensive, at times. Incredibly annoying, yet wildly entertaining at the same time. ;D

Here's a review on another site another forum with NMA threads...:
https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/new-model-army-carnival-redux-release-date-nov-27-2020.996965/#post-25457455
This is my first full album back to back A/B review, it will be short and sweet..because, this redux edition up against the original recording is night and day.
Essentially, the full power this recording has is what it deserved in the first place, it sounds fuller and I can feel the passion that NMA are known for, whether live or recorded.
The track order has changed slightly, the four 'new' tracks fit perfectly and seamlessly into this running order.
I've been on the NMA journey since 1983 and it was this album that made me think that they had their best years behind them, I was wrong..if you're reading this, you know why.
Overall, this redux does not disappoint, it's a massive improvement as far as I'm concerned.
I'm interested in any forthcoming views on this redux edition.

Mmmh, I assumed I had the whole file (name is nma_-_carnival_134928417) but when I tried to download just now I also just got the coverart. Sorry about the confusion, should have checked.
I ordered together with the online-ticket for the anniversary show and another CD and my order still says "awaiting online ticket". That other CD arrived a few weeks ago, though (another order that has been shipped 2-3 weeks ago hasn't gotten here yet, so getting slightly nervous there).
-
Only the lp is offered with a download ...
I`ve ordered the ticket and the link was here - the shop says, awaiting online-ticket ....
But the normal mail from the shop, that my cd has been shipped, it`s not here ???
None of us here seems to have the cd or lp, only saille in france has the lp without a download-link?
And an amazon.de trader offers a used one for 48 € (perhaps without having a brand new one `til now) ....
I hope the shop-members haved solved their health problems NMA mentioned a while ago
-
Mine arrived yesterday :)
-
No sign of my CD yet,no surprise as the post in to Jersey lately has been horrendous......middle of next week i reckon for my copy...

I must admit that I was skeptical when I heard of this. For one, I totally love Carnival as it is so I'm in the 'doesn't need fixing' camp. I'm also not sure if I agree with the concept of tinkering with previous releases. It's a bit like photo-shopping the spots off your teenage photos. That being said, I tried to approach this project with an open mind and after a few listens I concur with most people (in Facebookland) that it does indeed sound very good. At the same time I can't say that it I prefer one version over the other. There are some exceptions (I prefer the original versions of Bluebeat and Another Imperial Day). I haven't been able to play this on a decent stereo yet so maybe that will sway me. Oh and I love the full band version of Stoned, Fired and Full of Grace but I'm not sure if it belongs here and it will take some getting used to the new running order but I can see that it works.
I was always surprised at how unpopular Carnival was with so many people. Now I am a bit surprised how much people prefer the new version to the original. I think they're both great in their own different ways. Anyway, if it makes people appreciate this great album more then that can only be a good thing.
-
Got mine today. Love the Tshirt...halfway through the album now. Like Johnz said, I wasnt sure it needed changing, but it is actually quite good and the tweaks in mixing do make a difference. Is it better, no....but it is equally as good with a different listening experience.
Bravo everyone involved.
But I still cant stand LS43...SORRY :-\ :'(
-
Mine is here now, too :)
Second listening and I like it, the sound seems to be clearer (?), and the 4 extra ones are worth enough for me for having ordered it ...
-
I also got my album and T-Shirt yesterday. :)
Agree with Lotus, the sound is clearer and a bit more direct. R&R and One Bullet have always been favorites of mine and hoefully they make it on the setlist of some soon to be held gigs.
For me, the Redux version of the album is a definite improvement. Was ist absolutely necessary? Maybe not. Was it worth it? Absolutely!
-
Got my download link today :D
Will give it a listen
-
Haven't got it yet due to low cash, but I have to ask... is the version of 'Stoned Fired And Full Of Grace' a full band version or an acoustic one?
-
I have to ask... is the version of 'Stoned Fired And Full Of Grace' a full band version or an acoustic one?
It's a full band version.
-
Still waiting on mine ( Not complaining as not long ordered) but, I'm surprised ,so few reviews,so little feedback from those who have it? Should we all be worried, those of us yet to hear it,is it so bad? Surely not?
-

It's a full band version.
Cheers, buddy... been waiting to hear that for many years, the acoustic version is probably one of my top ten NMA tracks.
Now I'm off to plan some nefarious crime so I can get the cash together to buy this doubtlessly excellent CD... ;D
-
Didn't received the vinyl yet, but received the download version yesterday ! I have to say I enjoy much much more the new versions, hearing stuff that was not audible before. And there's some songs I really loved on this album prior to this mix (Red Earth, Too close to the Sun, Another Imperial Day, Island, Fireworks Night ...) but honestly, listening to the new mix and mastering, you realise that the album is much much more, in terms of arrangements, that it was possible to hear before. It's not like I'm discovering suddenly the album, it could have stayed the way it was. But then I would have more easily listened to live version of the songs than studio, now, I will definitely play the album more often. There's no way back IMHO. For the 4 bonus tracks, two were already available on lost songs, but the four of them makes a really nice addition to the album.
-
Well my copy finally arrived and i have to agree with comments already posted, sound clearer, some songs better, some originals better....worth it for the extra songs ..yes..I am enjoying it but this is a hard one for me as i posted earlier it is one of my favourite NMA albums.......still love LS43..
-
Me, I have it!!
So far one listen only.
I have no complaints.
To my ear,my mind. Its a listening album, not a full on dancing album was when first released.
I've spent a lot on Amps,speakers etc
The mixing on this is great.
Very forward, soo many layers.
Can't fault it.
Kinda sophisticated n Grown up album now.
So many layers, very forward ,all in all a great thing.
Not Better that the first album, just more grown up.
For me,turn the lights out.
Sit in the dark n listen....
Im loving it!
-
I bought the CD and the Vinyl version. I always liked Carnival although it was one of the NMA albums that I didn't "pull off the shelf" all that often. However, this remix is fantastic. I have been listening to it non-stop over the last week. My only complaint is that I do not like the album interior art work (for lack of a better term), the two faces are kind of creepy and feel out of place. Also, an issue with the vinyl copy I received is that the album sleeves are torn on the side, it's like the albums were too big for the sleeves. However, I am not sure if that is just a result of the album's transatlantic flight. Not a huge issue, still sounds incredible. Good work gents!
-
I am still waiting for my cd version from the shop (I think it shipped?), but I have been listening to a digital copy since release. Quick thoughts: I think Caslen is the version from the BD3 single, I don't notice any difference. Other than that, all songs are noticeably different. I think that a few songs have different vocal takes, anybody else notice that? I no they said they weren't going to rerecord anything, but I wonder how much of the material is different takes recorded at the original sessions. Overall I am a big fan of this. I know the idea of a redux for a long known and loved album can be contentious, but in this instance it really is more of a remix, as they are using originally recorded parts.
Also, I am loving up the full band version of Stoned, Fired and Full of Grace. I would love to see similar treatment for Turn Away, and I still hold out hope that a studio version of Ballad II will make it out someday. Maybe F#NY and BD7?
Lastly, I have noticed that some NMA albums are showing up on digital services, ones that I don't think were there before. Lost Songs, the original Carnival, and Vengeance: The Whole Story (!)
-
Has anybody in the US received their Carnival Redux shipment yet? It seems like that Carnival t-shirt would be perfect to wear for Christmas Eve! :D

Not me. I preordered in September, and have been advised by the shop that it has shipped. Patiently waiting.

Brilliant!
I had two listens to it. The first time was very intense, hadn't listen to the whole album for a long time and i had moments of surprise and pure joy and lots of energy coming from it. The new songs adding very good to the pace and mood, making it even "bigger". Such an intense ride and when i came to Carlisle Road it made me weep..
The arrangements and mixing and sound really make it a different album from the old mix. Too close to the sun has become so much more intense, like all intnese songs have become more open, wide and filled with playfulness.
Well, you can see it's so very hard for me to describe this, but i just love the redux!!!
I think someone asked if there was new recordings to it, because of the voice. I don't think so. I think this is all done by bringing it more to the front and adding maybe some overdubs here and there.
I find the new mix is giving everything a slightly different "place" in the song, making a different soundscape.
-
Everything you hear on the Redux version was recorded at the time. There have been no overdubs made at all to this recording. Hope that clears it up :-)
-
Thanks for pointing that out. I used the wrong word, overdub, for what i meant. My thought was, that maybe there were some takes used, which didn't make it on the originial. Something like that. Also like a raw-data and then use a different effect on it.
I don't really know how this work was done, but it is clear that this is not a simple re-mix, but really a re-imagining of the album. Not just a slogan, but a true thing!
-

I think it's all the same takes, just took the original tapes and remastering it, the exact same album, takes and all, just remastered by a sound engineer :)
-
So after hearing the new vinyl version several times the new mix is really great and I like it very much. But with one exception. The voice in Another imperial day sounds like my needle has gone forever (that was in fact my thirst thought while hearing it for the first time) but it is only the voice. It sounds partly dull and is mixed much more in the background compared to the original CD version. On CD Justin’s voice is much clearer and louder. So a good reason to save the CD. Enjoy the record and see you next year somewhere on the road. André
-
I have to say that when I first heard of the idea I had my doubts...serious ones at that. These things can go very badly.
I've given it a month now, and I have to say it's still brilliant and proves my doubts were unfounded. It's amazing just how fresh it sounds - almost as if it were actually recorded a few months ago. Testament to great talent and brilliantly crafted lyrics and music. I think I enjoy it more than when the original first came out, but can't quite put my finger on how and why.
Of course, it's highly unlikely, but I wonder what doing the same thing would do to LOHC. I was really disappointed when that first came out, and it took some time to grow on me - although I love some aspects of it now.
-

Only thing that's recorded anew is the string arrangement at the end of Fireworks Night. Justin asked me to replace the synth with some real strings and so I did :-)
-
You made me listen to both versions again, amazed I didn’t noticed before that the end sound really different !

Great info, thanks for sharing! So since you are also involved in the production, kind of, you must know both versions of the song. And also the whole album?
Would love to hear your opinion and insighst about the Redux version, if you have compared them or listened to them.

Well, I'm a fan for over 30 years, sure I know the songs and albums :-) I really dig the new mixes. Lee and Jamie at Greenmount Studios have again used their magic here. Apart from the overall sound being so much cleaner and more punchy there's so many instrument details, be it guitars, keyboards, whatever, that they pulled up from the mud/rescued from the cutting room floor. So lots of songs feel quite new and fresh to me. Of course the band version of One Bullet or Stoned, Fired, Full of Grace are previously unreleased versions that I had never heard before. Fireworks Night has been a secret favourite of mine so it was cool to get the chance of being part of this one and kinda even have the last word on this album :-)
-
Well that's really cool! You can hear yourself on your favourite song, nothing tops that! :D
This new mix is really an outstanding work of art. So the question just came to my mind, was this done ever before?
To re-imagine a whole album, using only the existing recordings?
I don't know any album of that kind. Re-mastered ones yes, but this kind of re-working the whole sound, going that far but staying true to the original?

I'm sure it was done before but I don't know of any examples. There's always a risk involved when going back and not only financially. I can imagine that if you don't have a vision of the sound you want to achieve and the perfect team of engineers at hand, these kind of projects can quickly go south.

Rush remixed Vapor Trails
Thanks for that! I looked it up and it seems that Rush really was very not pleased about the sound of the original recording so they hired someone to remaster it. Now i'm curious if they only did an overwork of the sound or if there is something like a new interpretation also involved.
Of course this re-mixing and re-imagining has been done before. I'm a huge Frankie goes to Hollywood fan and what Trevor Horn did with the songs, re-mixing, re-editing, different styles teached me to listen closer and think about production tricks in general.
Still feel that the Redux version of Carnival is a unique thing, maybe just because it's so good. It is on the threshold of subtle and in your face different.
-
If we're going down a slightly proggy route, Marillion (I know there's a few Fish-era fans around these parts!) did a great big remaster of Script For a Jesters Tear last year. Not for the first time! But this new version, part of a 4-cd set, sounds just amazing, the original had a very dated sound to it but they've taken the original tracks, stripped them down and put them back together again and it truly sounds like something that might have been recorded yesterday. Fugazi up next and I can't wait!

isn't some giant from scotland their singer, recall something about some woman, lee or something
thought they were some sort of death metal band dressed up in makeup and leotards and swinging battle axes?
strange name for a band but dunno, maybe it works, will look up this script you mention
but back on target: do love carnival redux and one bullet

If we're going down a slightly proggy route, Marillion (I know there's a few Fish-era fans around these parts!) did a great big remaster of Script For a Jesters Tear last year. Not for the first time! But this new version, part of a 4-cd set, sounds just amazing, the original had a very dated sound to it but they've taken the original tracks, stripped them down and put them back together again and it truly sounds like something that might have been recorded yesterday. Fugazi up next and I can't wait!

Ha! ;D Well, not quite, but well done for trying! Not everyone's cup of tea but, like I said, just mentioning it for the other fans of the band around here. And nothing wrong with a thread going off on a tangent... ;)

A few years ago, Sony asked Iggy Pop to remix Raw Power, as the Bowie mix was only with medium, no treble or bass (what drugs make you do !).
He remixed the whole album, not just remastered if I'm correct. You started to hear stuff that you never heard before (like some piano part, for example).
I was thrilled, always thought the songs of this album were amazing in live but awful on the studio album. The sound was loud but clear.
today, I'm back to the original, the Iggy version seems "untrue", can't say why, it feels like a fake Stooges album.

Yes, that is a cracking example of how to take an album apart and reassemble it, bit by bit... always loved Raw Power but this new version took it to a whole new level!

Thanks was not aware of the remixed Raw Power, I shall order it and do some of my own research.

Be careful, there's other "new" versions since then, remastered ones. I have 3 different versions, the original mix, the Iggy mix, then the "legacy edition" which is a remastered edition but of the Bowie mix ...
Send me an MP with your email and we can work something out for you to listen to the three different ones ;)

considering that I have the original cd since many years and the price of the vinyl is very high on this one I guess I will stick to my old copy

Finally got my CD and listened to it the first time last Friday... It was worth all waiting :P
I’d like to say that the fact that it’s not a new album, the fact that I've already known the songs for the past fifteen years, I already had a strong emotional bond to them: that’s exactly what made the experience of listening to this redux extremely intimate. Like, sorry for being vulgar but you know, like someone you’ve known for years is suddenly fumbling with your private parts in a whole new way? ::)
Anyway, I put my headphones on and pressed play... Water... And it happened to be almost full moon outside... I was spaced out for half a minute with a wide grin on my face and then simply burst out laughing. The purifying laughter of positive disbelief. It sounded ridiculously great. The bass and drums....... I probably wore this stupid expression of pure awe, while I kept bursting out laughing. I cannot remember what made me feel so happy last time.
It must be all the layers of old memories being dug out from dry clay, but this time the soil was suddenly fresh. It was rather a purely sonic experience. Some serious, spontaneous archaeology was ongoing somewhere deep. With Red Earth... the sound was just too much, I found myself suddenly bawling like a child and couldn't stop. I had to stop the album for a while and finish my crying-like-a-baby -session. After, I managed to behave move civilized for the rest of the album.
First I was a bit sceptical that the song order had also been changed instead of just leaving it as it was and put the extra songs to the end... But no, this has been properly thought through.
What an emotional roller-coaster ride.

Tarsier, it's so great to read your posts, thank you for that! I really can re-imaging it with your description. When i put on Island, not knowing what to expect, kind of thinking about a re-mastered version, it just blew me away..up to that point where laughter just came from the depths of the joy of this experience in that moment.

I'd say it's worth a listen! Definitely for the songs that have been added. The band version of Stoned, Fired, and Full of Grace is worth the price of admission alone.

In my opinion, if you like the original version for what it is, a damn brilliant nma album, you just HAVE to get somehow the redux-version. There's no way around that. The redux-version is such a deep felt re-working of the original sound and it sounds just mind-blowing. So if it won't be the vinyl version for you, you should somehow try to get at least a listen to the redux version. Just saying... 8)

I’m glad if I can make someone’s day a bit brighter :)
But, re-imaging with my description? You mean, you also felt the fumble? ;D
Funny you mentioned Island – it’s actually one of the songs that I hadn’t paid that much attention to in the past, but now… well, I’m listening to it constantly. And nowadays, I’ve been rather glad wearing a respirator mask – I’ve been in such a good mood… and listening to whatever music while sitting in a metro, whenever a reeeeally good part of a song comes I grin like an idiot but yeah, the mask covers most of it.
And… I wanted to ask if there’s someone else here who prefers the original version of Too Close to the Sun? It’s one of my favourite songs and I wouldn’t have guessed that it would be the one and only song in the whole redux album that, to me, sounds better and, in fact very different in the original album. I find the redux version of it somehow horrendously heavy… like, mentally speaking. The first drum beat, it sounded like someone just threw a rock into a pond of liquid lead. Maybe it’s just me, having a dark pond of cold, liquid lead somewhere deep down and wishing to leave the surface of it undisturbed. Maybe that’s the black place in my heart… :)

I just love the dark and gritty new sounding of that song, but i think i can understand what you mean. I also thought that the redux version affected this song even more than the others. It became more dramatic (if that's possible;-) ) and kind of added thereby a bit to the story. Like a very dark, stormy, windy, cloudy scene in a movie, where you can see the sky and mountains now also has some lightning and thunder..
Don't know how to put it, but i feel that that song has changed very much. And i love it. But also good to still have the old version.

Too close to the Sun, sound-wise, gives me this weird feeling of old King Crimson, somehow... :) The original one I mean... I wanted to say something else also but no... forgot it... ;D

may be a good idea why not but as i wrote for justin s new solo lp there no reasons for a cd or vinyl to be so expensive. sorry.................will stick to my old copy
