Title: Paris gig
Post by: Jay 2 on February 08, 2012, 09:09:19 PM
Just got back from the Paris gig and i have to say that the audience and Justin were amazing!

This was the fist Justin/Dean acoustic gig I have been to and I loved every minute of it, the two were on amazing form and Justin's rapport with the audience was a joy to behold. Loved the set as there were a lot of songs you do not hear in the regular NMA sets, not that there is a regular set.
I take off my hat to Justin every time I see him and on this chilly night in France I was even more ecstatic than usual to hear a crisp clean acoustic set filled with beautiful songs. The atmosphere was electric and at times you could hear a pin drop in hushed expectation.

As Justin said to the crowd, "you know when to be quiet and when to make a noise," to which the crowd responded, " because we have respect!"

Respect indeed. Bravo!

yeah i really agree with that Jay2 :)

I have seen NMA/ Justin 50+ times & that was right up there with the best :)

A really respectful crowd, Justin & Dean seemed to rise to the occasion (seemed a bit shaky in the first 2 songs while they got the sound right) and Another Imperial Day, North Star, You Weren't There & Dawn were moving beyond words...

The show was amazing. Once again.

Got one question : what was that poem that Justin told us ? I was stunned.
"The goods are free to move but not the people,
The guns are free to move but not the people,
The money is free to move but not the people"
etc

I would love to hear it again.

Thanks. Shame on me ! I just made a search and found it.
Well, maybe the fact it was said instead of sung (and I guess cause my english is not that good ahaha).

Great show. Waiting for the next one already.

Stil replaying the gig in my head, wish I had an audio of it to treasure.

One question, what was the place in Paris that Justin said he visited that day, the one he liked to which the audience replied that it was touristy but beautiful.

Whilst I am in Paris for two days I would like to visit it.

Cheers! Jason

The show was really great, but I'm a little ashamed, two people above are speaking about what the "crowd" said, the respect thing and the tourist but nice place, and it was twice me  :-X
The thing is that Justin manage, when he speak in between songs, to makes you feel like if you were in your own living room just speaking with a friend ... so next time I will try to not "show off" like that, sorry :D

So the beautiful place is not in Paris, it's in Normandie, and it's called Etretat. it's very well known in France because of a rock there, that have the reputation to be hollow, and it is were a very famous and very old french novel took place, "Arsene Lupin et l'aiguille creuse" (wikipedia link in english http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hollow_Needle).

Vanity was just ... can't find words, already my favorite song, and yesterday was my favorite performance of it, another imperial day, no music version, makes me chill every time, and Before I get Old was just the most amazing version I could imagine

It was all you!? Ha ha. No need to apologies, I enjoyed the "banter." Did you also call out "Justin for French Prime Minister!" too? That was funny, "petite problem, I cannot speak french." Such a good natured gig. :)

Thank you for the info and the link on the rock, very interesting and very kind of you. I have one more day in Paris looking at BD art and galleries and then back home to England after a brilliant wonderul concert and some chilly days in Paris.

No, I wasn't the one that called Justin for president :) But yes, there was a really good spirit between the crowd and them, mostly after the first half of the show :)
If you're still in Paris, you can go to "le sacré coeur", not for the Church, but because this was the place of a great (but aborted) left wing french revolution, "La Commune". I had a walk with JS there some years ago, and I was amazed as he knew everything about la Commune, even better than myself :)
Again, wikipedia is such a good source for informations :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_Commune

A nice moving performance by JS & DW. Once again, are we tempted to say, aren't we, folks?? The first 2 songs werent up to the level the rest of the performance took us up to. A question of sound checking, i'd guess.  Notice Me was "the'' moment, as far as i'm concerned.  What was yours, dear NMA fans????

i also like the version of Notice Me. Absolutely brilliant :)
some of you talk about the crowd i just want to say that I was the person who did the drum and guitar during the break in Ballad of Bodmin Pill....(I'm sorry Justin maybe it annoyed you)...
North Star was beautiful too...i've never heard the acoustic version....

don't know why i wasn't very motivated to go to JS and DW gig but once i was at the gig, i didn't regret to come.

this way of performing "Notice me" was really impressive. Just brilliant. Justin, you just make us happy.

It was a Very good acoustic gig in a small place.

A special thought about the absentees (François and Seb)  ;)

I tried to take several photos (many thanks to Dominique for his authorization), sorry for the quality  :-\

... i'd say artistic  ;) especially for the second one ;)
i said that sentence about Dean 'cause i've noticed some photographers only take Justin in photo even if it's a NMA gig. We know Justin is a big part of NMA of course but it won't be the same without the talented musicians he has around him ;) and a Justin solo gig won't be the same without the very talented guitar player Dean White. I really liked how he play when he's with Justin. He create some really good atmosphere for Justin's songs.

It was a great great gig , excellent atmosphere - ambiance decontractree et familiale -
And I was positively surprised by the audience !
Justin a beaucoup parlé en Francais , great  ;)
Nobody said it, but Dean has made some new extended guitar solos in several songs :
Wipeout, aimless desire.... He didn't do that on last year tour, it was fantastic   :D

A few videos will follow as soon as possible

Sorry to not have talked more with some of the French family, next time !

A very powerful yet sometimes very intimate set. Justin looked refreshed and sharp, backed by the subtle waves and harmonies of Dean. This is one of the best acoustic shows out there, it was certainly so in Paris.

I personally think that at the stripped down songs they excel and it still gets better ;) So I prefer this at the moment...

My favourites were/are Wipeout and Vanity

Hi, the hotel I was staying in was a few streets away from le sacre coeur and the information you provided was very interesting, did not know the history of that area. That was a very short lived revolution! :)

A question, around that area I saw many armed police (soldiers?) with sub machine guns doing patrols. Why is this? I once got accosted by a peddler in that area which was uncomfortable but I cannot imagine armed soldiers are there to control that issue?

It was so cold in Paris I think I have returned to the uk with a dose of pnumononia and have been bed bound. Still, was worth it for the amazing gig! :)

Gah! Dimeadozen, bittorrents, ddl sites - I know nothing of these things. Would dearly love to have a recording of this gig. Can someone send me the file or point me into a user friendly way of getting it? Do not want to break the bands copyright in the process tho' if that is an issue.

Hi, the hotel I was staying in was a few streets away from le sacre coeur and the information you provided was very interesting, did not know the history of that area. That was a very short lived revolution! :)
Short, but the first red flag, and the first "communist" revolution, according to ... Karl Marx :)

A question, around that area I saw many armed police (soldiers?) with sub machine guns doing patrols. Why is this? I once got accosted by a peddler in that area which was uncomfortable but I cannot imagine armed soldiers are there to control that issue?
This is a really touristic area. So there's a lot of people that gonna accost you, mainly to propose you to enter for a sex show :). No reason for military with them ;). But, for decades now, they try to frightened us by the terrorist menace, and a special emergency state is declared so that they can display military in Paris. As far as I know, their machine guns are not even loaded (an ex military told me that), so it's not even to really protect people, but just to cause fear in the population, to be able to manipulate the opinion more easily. This is exactly "the shock doctrine (http://"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shock_doctrine")" (if anybody on this forum haven't seen that and read this, it's an emergency, grab it and watch it, or read the book :)).

It was so cold in Paris I think I have returned to the uk with a dose of pnumononia and have been bed bound. Still, was worth it for the amazing gig! :)
I can't believe that someone living in the UK could find Paris colder than England :D

[edit] about the military, Wikipedia is definitely the place to look for :) here's a very brief english page about it (http://"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vigipirate") and a more complete page, in French (http://"http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plan_Vigipirate), where you can see that it has been cancelled only two times since 1991, once for 4 years, and once for 2 month, and was never really canceled since 1996 ...

you're welcome, when it comes to topics I like, I tend to link too much informations ;). But really, if you haven't, the most important is to watch (or read) the shock doctrine, amazing documentary !

BTW, on a totally different subject, does anyone know if it's always Justin that bring the music to play before / after the gig ? I'm pretty sure it used to be him (had too many times various Motown, Cypress Hill and Noir Désir before the gigs to be just a coincidence) but lastly seemed to me there was a lots of old Trojan records, perhaps I'm fooling myself, am I the only one that wonder ? :D

I thought the same thing at the Paris gig, I keep hearing the same music before an NMA gig no matter where I see them and the when I heard the same music before the Justin/Dean gig in Paris I knew it was too much of a coincidence. Would like to know for sure though.

When there was always Aretha / Cypress / Noir Désir, I knew it was the band because JS stated in many interviews he like those bands, but as for today, I'm not sure :) And as I'm in a big Trojan Ska / Reggae revival, I will find it funny :)
