I'd recommend Sheppy's Vintage Reserve (proper Somerset cider). Goes down as smooth as silk, and you only notice its strength when you've finished it ! Being pedantic, I think that Stella Cidre stuff is Belgian rather than French. Not tried it myself and don't really want to. In defence of the French, or at least a region of France, there is a long history of proper cider making in Brittany. Brittany or Bretagne is actually more akin to Cornwall in general feel than anywhere else !
And I would say, You can't have too many books, photos or dreams ! :)
-
I had noticed the minor gaff on the French / Belgian issue, but agree with TPF, with the heritage of Cider making with have in this country, surely we don"t need to import the stuff. OK, if its wine, fair doos, bring it in, but Belgian Cider,, its like the Scots importing Portuguese Whisky or similar :D Local Cider for local Cider making jobs.

i think shush stated it like i meant it to mean, why not stick to the west country stuff, also, yes Belgium my mistake (or my bad as i think the young now say)
the cidre/boulmers etc etc seem to a sanitised mass market type of cider to me, been eyeing up thay sheppys stuff, make get a few bottles for next weekend
-
Now this has become a Cider topic, after a nice family holiday in Cromer last year, must put in a good word for Aspalls. Fine Sulfolk cider, fresh and smooth, a bit like Champagne IMO. ;)
-
So, no love for Strongbow or Frosty Jacks?
( ducks, no, RUNS for cover...)
;)
-
I'll be glad to sup a pint of Strongbow with you at Manchester Master Ray !!. never heard of the other one though, sorry.

Don't, mate, it's about £4 for three litres, about 8%... f-ing rocket fuel aimed at the bemused and slightly incoherant people who hang around your local parks in tracksuits and look like they belong in a Mike Leigh movie...
-
We"ll have to save for after the gig rather than before in that case ;D
-
Talking of cider, Shush....remember when we got the bus into town one Saturday night about 20 odd years ago and that lad at the front heard us talking about cider and piped up "Scrumpy Jack puts you on yer back"?
Anyway, back on topic....you can't have too many of your songs blasting out on the jukebox.

Sheppys is nice!
back on thread, you can't have too many water butts for your veg plot & fruit trees (had two of them full, nearly ran out until recent thunder storms, invested in third, fourth to follow next month)
-
Now this has become a Cider topic, after a nice family holiday in Cromer last year, must put in a good word for Aspalls. Fine Norfolk cider, fresh and smooth, a bit like Champagne IMO. ;)
Aspalls organic, nice. if you like that try the Kingston Black from the Somerset Cider brandy lot
http://www.ciderbrandy.co.uk/shop.html
it aint cheap, which is why i get a bottle for cristmas time & one for summer, two if work is going well, but it is almost worth the price

I do. Its amzing what crap you can remember, but things like someones birthday, or your aniversary, just goes straight out of your head.
You can"t have too many £20s in your pocket.

Sheppys is nice!
Glad you like the recommendation ! :)
They do lots of others too, quite a few single apple variety ones. I haven't tried them all though. Keep promising myself to visit their orchards just outside Taunton sometime.
Just a couple of those Vintage Reserves is enough to make me feel quite mellow and happy shall we say ;D

So, this threads about bloody cider now? Let me get it back on track...
You can never have too many reunions with old friends.
Got a call a couple of days back from a mate from the old days, by which I mean the 80's... yeah, I know, I'm getting old...
The best friends I ever had were the people I did a media course with in, as I said, the 80's. None of us ever made the slightest impact in the media world but we had such a laugh!
In the intervening years we've been in and out of touch but, in the cold light of 2013, it's mostly 'out'. So when that friend of mine called me the other night, it made me happy. It's been about three years (and was about three years before that since our last meet) but I'm looking forward to our forthcoming meet / drinking session! Going through a bit of a bad patch right now, so... yay!
And just to bring it back to NMA, this is the friend who first got me into NMA! A trip over to Stoke with a tape playing in the car stereo of his old Honda Civic... a ghostly intro followed by a percussive section and a brilliant chorus...
'What's this, mate?'
'It's New Model Army'...
And so it began...
;)
-
you can't have too many threads within threads! :)

You can't have too many smiles and laughs from your new baby niece when she's cradled in the crook of your arm at just a couple of months old... especially when she's quite cranky with other people according to her parents... oh yeah, I'm her favourite uncle alright!
And this from a man who never quite understood the appeal of babies before... I get it now.
I understand if anyone reads this and wants to throw up at my sentimentality, but... sod it! This kid is amazing!

New forum members. Been a steady trickle this week, maybe the word is getting out. Latest member Knievel. At first I though it must be a fan of the great Evel Knievel, my boyhood hero when I was about five. Then I realised its going to be track number eight on the new album. :D
Still have fond memories of my Mattel wind up Evel Knievel bike and rider whizzing across the living room carpet :) Them were toys in the 1970s !!

Toys in the 70's... a seperate thread surely? ;)
Of course, I never had a Kenieval... there were ten of us, living in 'hole in 'road...

My favourite Evel Knievel jump was the one of London buses at Wembley stadium in 1975. As young I was then, I remember all the media hype. A very 1970s spectacular.
You can call me Sushi if you want when you see me and Barty at Manchester, but Shush is my nickname, not just my forum profile !!!

You can never have too many bands you love coming out with new albums in the same month. For me, I got Glasvegas (just listening to their new one now!), Manic Street Preachers, The Pixies (OK, not an album, but new stuff nonetheless), Fish and, oh, some other band whose name escapes me right now, all coming out with new music between now and the end of the month.
I am going to wallow in music heaven in the next few weeks...

In my mind, "old" is not a matter of years, but a matter of attitude. I know people significantly younger than my parents who seem decades older...

TPF, I saw Fish a few months back in Warrington and it was a fantastic gig. He played a lot of stuff from the new album and I thought it was fantastic... even on first listen, it really caught my ear. Probably his best since 'Vigil'... but don't take my word for it, put Fish / Warrington into Youtube, plenty of cips there!
An amazing frontman.

"Synthetic leather upper, synthetic/textile lining, synthetic sole - 100% vegan and 100% Dr Marten's."
Got them last year and wear them all the time....no sign of wear - there's not much out there for us vegans so I was chuffed to discover them.
-
Barty, maybe you could patent the first Vegan clogs !!,
-
I bought some leather ones from Walkleys at Hebden Bridge back in 1990....as you may well recall Shush. Honestly don't know what happened to 'em. If I find them, you can have them! ;D I remember constantly slipping over in them at Rock City...ah, the memories!
But yeah, I'll have to find some vegan ones now...

I'll be having loads of those at the end of February.
My brother lives and works in Prague and for my Christmas present of y girlfriend she arranged for us to fly over there and sorted out 4 nights in a 4 star hotel so we can see Prague and my brother.
Unfortunately my brother is recovering from glandular fever and has been told not to drink for 3 months as his liver needs to get better... so he's going to have to watch me and the girlfriend drinking all that lovely Czech beer!

Agree with that Heno but it should be first seven songs I think Stranger is brilliant as is R&R but to a slightly lesser extent and then you're at Snelsmore Wood... track eight is good too :)
-
i guess i only say that as four best songs to start an album only happened twice. the love of hopeless causes would be the one to compete with eight in that regard. but i hear and accept what you say about the first 8 on eight.

-
yeah. it about all i drink these days. i like it.
i can't handle guinness. or ale so much although i do like the odd pint of directors and a pack of pork scratchins.
we are very poor in terms of cider. not like england or north west france. same as craft beer. we struggle. guinness is about it. and its such a huge brand and so massively associated with a national identity. well, how can you stop it even if its piss.
arthur guinness was a prick
-
What about Magners ? Is that popular over there, or is it mainly exported to here?
-
magnets in the uk is bulmers here. and its huge. i used to drink it a lot. a lot of us did. but its not good grog. in the uk its called magners since the nukekybrownale company had the bulmers trademark and would give it to them. i thinks it more or less the same brew though.
i'm more can of scrumpy jack or devils bit drinker. real cider. no apples
-
Oh, OK.
if you read the start of this topic, we talked a fair bit about cider, and why we import Irish Cider when we make so much of it over here.
I think its all down to English drinking culture, and in that, anything Irish involving drink seems to get the thumbs up. Not saying that's a bad thing, but it just re-enforces stereo types about the Irish we may tend to have here.
Cider wise, my fave is Aspalls cider from Norfolk, which in itself is a break from West Country cider.
Ah well, it all does the same job :D :D

Well, we here think The One & Only preferred choice is Scottish or Irish. ;) Islay or highland single malt. Some good labels in Japan as well though they're considered rather as a rarity.
Btw, is there any local brewery coming from Bradford? I'd like to taste an authentic brew or cider from there if there is some.
-
Rusco,
What beers do you lot have up there ? any famous Finnish brewer, or do you mainly import the stuff ?
-
Oh yes there are. Sinebrychof (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinebrychoff) and Olvi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olvi) are the biggest brewerys here. Products like Karhu (http://www.fbsk.net/documents/2004/05/karhu-valikoima.jpg), Koff & Lapin Kulta for some to mention. They are the oldest and common here. Some new, minor companies like Laitila make very interesting beers which have a rich flavour (Keisari and Marsalkka) and nowadays I rather spend my money on them although the price is somewhat high. Pubs do import Czech, German and British brew too and have a wide availability.
Finns have always drank a lot. Some would say too much. In history, until 1940's people made a booze called sahti and kilju that had a strong odour and tasted somewhat terrible. Long time ago, at a time of First World War and after that there was a twenty years period when alcohol was controlled and prohibited by law. Many made sahti secretly at home. Prohibition brought a taboo stamp for long time for being drunk in public or if you even went to a pub. But things changed of course. I'm soon an old fart and have not seen those days, but my generation's parents remember it still.
Punk rockers have always made kilju at home. Once when the Scots Oi polloi were touring in Finland first time they were amazed by kilju here and there's a rumour that when they returned to Britain and met the Doom guys there (who were going to tour next Finland), they told that "beware those Finns, they will give you a drink called 'kill-you' and they'll take you to hot sauna and spank you with tree branches!" ;D The branches are actually made of birch and used to stimulate the skin while it's 85 celsius hot in sauna. It's a very old tradition.

So how did it go there? Curious to hear... Was it you, Shush and Barty up there in Warrington? :)
-
Hello Rusco, no Barty sadly. He had family commitments, so is doing Norwich tonight. I am sure he will find good company there, and is having a great time RIGHT NOW

Warm spring days and hammocks.

... meals with your Dad, like I did last night, especially in view of the fact that what we hoped were minor health problems look to be a bit more serious... not immediately life-threatening, but it doesn't bode well for the future if the meds don't work...
I don't spend nearly enough time with my Dad, if any of you have a similar thing with a loved one, you might want to look into that... just sayin'.

i hear ya ray. I hope it works out well man.
i spend too little time with my Dad. And he's so understanding even when make lame excuses. He knows me more than most. We have a boat here in wicklow and I gotta make sure that I bring him fishing. I want to have the conversation with him that sorts of opens things up a little, sort of makes it more two grown ups rather than a bloke and his 48 year old kid. but i don't want to lose the father son relationship either or ever.
**** me i'm sad right now :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

@ Ray & Heno - love to ya' both on those posts. Difficult not to come out with something trite but I guess that just seeing these things and acknowledging them is more than many people manage to do. For my part I'm closer to my Dad now than I had been since teenage years and sometimes perhaps it takes a bit of a system shock to get there? I dunno' but whatever hope it all works out.

Once when the dentists made a surgery operation to remove my wisdom teeth, my friend asked me to go to a gig the same evening. My jaws were so damn swollen my head looked like huge pear. :) So I declined.

Bank holiday weekends. Even if it is going to rain..
A good excuse to stay home, drink heavily, eat even more heavily and avoid the hoards that will doubtlessly flood anything approaching a leisure activity... ;)

Shots of espresso.
A bit off topic but i read that someone died after 14.

packed coffee in a while ago. my hyperactive childbrain doesn't go well with caffeine or any other energy drink. sets me mad and anxious.
i can't have too many days where i realise the priorities in life and step back, think things through, and focus on what is important and relegate the rubbish to its rightful place

Ahh Pol and his Iron Bru. Like a true proud Scotsman. Iron bru in a can, with vodka, and an E-fag flavour.
Miss you Pol. :'(

Pets, I guess. We keep meaning to downsize, it would be the sensible thing to do for a whole number of reasons.
Somehow, though, it never seems to work, so we are now counting 5 dogs, 3 rabbits and 6 guinea pigs. Doesn't really leave you with an awful lot of time and money for anything else. :D

Aw, that picture... thanks for posting that. Upstairs at Spanky's on Goldsmith Street, wasn't it? Good times... be lovely to hear from those folks again, just in case they're popping in every once in a while but not posting... :-\
