OK, guys, this forum is going a bit quiet, so I'm going to start a new thread, hope you'll post back... FILMS AND TV!
I think it's been done before, but it seems that the previous thread is now lost, so I'm starting a new one.
I'm a huge film fan, but there are so many great TV shows currently running... I really think that TV is better than movies at the moment. So many good shows out there right now!
So I'm gonna post three top-5 lists (please bear in mind I'm a sci-fi nerd)...
TOP 5 TV RIGHT NOW...
1 - Game Of Thrones
2 - Breaking Bad

5 - Sherlock
TOP 5 TV OF ALL TIME (IMO)

5 - Doctor Who (the old version)
Top 5 FILMS OF ALL TIME (again IMO)

So, whats your opinion?
-
Can we reply with just a film list, or just film and all time telly, I will struggle with five fav current telly. - the News maybe ?
-
OK Master Rayce, not an easy challenge.
Tried to do the current TV, but gave up. I could not condense down my fave films to five, so made a cross section of several genres down from a very long list to a list of 10.

4--Black Adder

Ashamed to say I never got into THE WIRE (although I think that Mr Elba is, quite frankly, a God of an actor) so consider it the next choice on my watchlist.
I started this thread so I could get to grips with what like-minded folk are watching. I trust your opinions and I've got a lot of time on my hands right now, so bring 'em on! Especially if they're on Netflix which I'm watching a lot right now because I figured how to hook up my laptop to my TV.
What else you into?

Fools and Horses

Once I got my ear tuned in to the accents, I found The Wire to be really good and deffo in my top 5 list of all time. I also enjoy a bit of Nordic Noir, one to mention is Lilyhammer.
Cheers

Yes. I would love to see the lists of the band members :P
Maybe people could customise it more to their preferred media, book lists maybe ?

Wierdly, I've been recently watching Youtube clips of Pipkins, which I watched when I was a little'un... I don't remember it as being so oddly disturbing...
I take your re-runs of Bullseye and I raise you repeats of 3-2-1 on Freeview...

love your concept of current telly Barty,, you can't beat a bit of bully :D
It's an all time classic. "Bring back the couple from the first episode...I bet they'll have a gamble...what d'ya reckon Tony?"
Green's on the new series hosted by Dave Spikey - he's still wearing his 1983 sky blue jumper and slacks set.
Yes Master Ray, I've also been watching Pipkins on YouTube - to show my kids. I had to turn it up as I could Hartley Hare it ;)
321? The most confusing quiz ever broadcast. The poetic clues, the world's first wheelie bin, the out of work actors....Saturday night TV was seriously weird in the early '80s. :D

Oh yes, 3-2-1, with the lovely Carloline Munro, top 70s Babe, star of the film classic, At the Earths Core, and an appearance in, The spy who loved me.

3--The haunting (original)
Not bad and quite creepy!
If you love this one and overall creepy ambiguous ghost stories, i strongly recommend to you one of my very favourite movies, "Full Circle" from director Richard Loncraine.
Here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkcSIp7D1nc&feature=g-upl
One of the best "ghost story" ever in my opinion and a great underrated british film of the 70's, with an awesome lead performance from Mia Farrow and an incredible soundtrack...creepy, haunting, beautifully shot and moving ( i will never forget the ending scene!!! ):
After the death of her daughter, Julia (Mia Farrow) moves away from her domineering husband, Magnus (Keir Dullea) and into a spooky, old London house. Almost immediately she begins seeing glimpses of her dead daughter... in the house, in the park. Is her daughter's spirit not at rest? Or is something more sinister haunting Julia? Based on the novel "Julia" by Peter Straub.
Bubba Ho-Tep
It is a great little film, isn't it?
It's brillantly acted, funny, the soundrack is great and it is touching (i had tears in my eyes at the end!)...others Don Coscarelli's flicks i like very much are "Phantasm" (the first one) and "Kenny and co".
-
Thanks Guillaume , I,ll give that a go. Just had a look, see someone has uploaded the entire 1.5 hour film !! I really like 1960 - 70s British Ghost / horror films. With the sensors as strict as they were at the time with gore and violence, story and atmosphere had to take place instead. Like Mia Farrow, excellent in Rosemary's Baby. When I have that 1.5 hours spare, I will give it a watch.
Had not personally noticed before entire films on there. Soon I will ask myslef, why bother having a telly. ;)

Yeah watch it, i'm curious of your opinion about it! ;)
Especially since you love "the haunting", both films share a certain ambiguity because of their tormented lead character...another great one film like this is "The innocents" from "Turn of the screw" by Henry James.
I'd say that "Full Circle"'s story is close to another creepy and more well known film, "Don't look now".
I"ve posted this link because at this time unfortunately there is not a decent dvd/blu ray of this film.
Some of my favorite horror films are the haunted house flicks, like "Full Circle", "The entity", "Burnt offerings", The innocents", "The changeling", "Suspiria", etc.
-
Guillaume, don't know if you're in the UK but if you are, Film4 are showing Dario Argento's 1980 masterpiece 'Inferno' tonight... not as good as 'Susperia' but way better than 'Mother Of Tears'... it's showing at 1.20 am, preceeded by utterly bizarre low-budget flick 'Basket Case', a film I haven't seen since I was a teenager, happily watching stupidly bloody video nasties on VHS...
-
Guillaume, don't know if you're in the UK but if you are, Film4 are showing Dario Argento's 1980 masterpiece 'Inferno' tonight... not as good as 'Susperia' but way better than 'Mother Of Tears'...
Master Ray, i'm not in the UK i live in France, but thanks for the tip!
Dario Argento is one of my very favourite directors (i even created a blog about him and his films!)..."Inferno" is great, it looks like a surreal, labyrinthic nightmare full of haunting visions (the underwater scene, the Verdi scenes...) and with great style and visuals...i must admit i had fun with "Mother of Tears" despite it is flawed (it should have been better budgeted)!
My favourite Argento films are "Phenomena" (wonderful horror fairy tale, stylish and haunting), "The Stendhal Syndrome", "Opera", "Deep red" and "The bird with the crystal plumage" but i like all his works, overall, even his lesser works.
My others favourite directors are Michael Mann and John Carpenter.

It's nice to meet people with similar interests!
For me, it's a toss-up between 'Suspiria' and 'Opera' as my fave Argento film, 'Phenomena' being a close third. 'Tenebrae' is probably in 4th place. Good to see TSS getting some love, a really under-rated picture!
And for any NMA fans who also like horror films and have no idea what me and Guillaume are on about... investigate the works of Dario Argento. Bloody great.
-

Evening Guillaume,
I,m with you on "The changeling", another film with good scare and no blood.
"The changeling" is very much in tone like "Full Circle"! ;)
It is a pretty good film, creepy (i like the seance scene) and George C.Scott delivers a solid performance in it, he was a really good actor.
Are you familiar with a few other British horrors, Asylum, lifeforce, From beyond the Grave, And now the screaming Starts, The goul, The Asphyx, The Monster club, and physcomania.
from that list yes , I am a Cushing fan.
From this list i've seen only "The Monster club" (not bad, a fun anthology) and "Lifeforce" which i really like, a crazy mix between horror, sci-fi and vampire tale...i like the films from his director Tobe Hooper ("Texas chainsaw massacre 1 & 2", "Funhouse", "Poltergeist"...).
I own the dvd of "Asylum" but i haven't watched it yet...if you like british horror films i guess that you like the Hammer Films? ;)
-
I loved LIFEFORCE as a teenager (mainly because of the copious nudity) and watched it a few weeks back on Netflix... a movie that treads that fine line between 'awful' and 'brilliant'...
Another UK horror movie I truly adore is 'Theatre Of Blood'... great cast, witty script and a gorgeous soundtrack...
Any love for the early 80's TV series 'Hammer House Of Horror'..?
-

"Mother of Tears" had a bit of this crazy vibe, with the gorgeous naked evil girl and people becoming crazy in the streets ha ha!
I agree that "Lifeforce" is between "awful" and "brillant", it has some brillant stuff and visuals but also some cheesy (on purpose?) stuff...i still like it, though!
It's good to hear that there's love for old school horror movies on this forum! 8) 8)
Another UK horror movie I truly adore is 'Theatre Of Blood'... great cast, witty script and a gorgeous soundtrack...
I have good memories of this one! darkly funny!
Another one in the same ground was "Dr Phibes".
Any love for the early 80's TV series 'Hammer House Of Horror'..?
It was great, i remember a few episodes like the one with Dirk Benedict possessed and betrayed by a living tattoo...
a very creepy tv series was in the 80's "The Hitchhiker", more recently i quite liked the "Masters of Horror" tv series from directors Dario Argento, Joe Dante, John Landis, John Carpenter...

Yes, lots of love, got the box set, remember it scaring the pony and trap out of me in 1981, or was it 1982? remember it was on Friday nights at 9pm.
Yes, total hammer fan (the film studio, not MC hammer)

'The House That Bled To Death' freaked me right the hell out...
You have the box set? Dammit, I was looking into youtube links for you!

Master Ray and Shush, here's a special thread for Dario Argento and others horror & thrillers movie directors ;):

I'll lend it to you if you haven't got it. Guillaume, the Dirk Benedict infected with a spreading tattoo Hammer, that was from a series of cheaply made Cinema releases, around the same time, not the TV series, sorry, not trying to be picky, after all, it was a long time ago. I do remember ITV showing the Hammer films Summer holidays, 10.30pm Wednesday nights, 1984, the tattoo film was one of them. God, that sounds sad that I remember that, I should have got out more and found a nice girlfriend !!

Here's what does it for me - there's not really a top 5 cos I tend to either go for something, or not go for it at all.
In no particular order....
Film
Magnolia - I know some folks hate it, but when I saw it all I could think was "this is the real world, utterly random and unbelievably f&&king amazing because not one bit of it makes any of this so-called 'sense' that we keep trying to impose on it".
American Beauty - kind of the same as Magnolia for me, it's full of what I can only see as real people. For me the lines that are walked between reality and caricature are so delicately walked that it works: I've known people who deal or use who you'd never suspect, I've known couples who think they're unhappy but really just don't know what the hell they're doing - that sort of thing. They're all around us, and they *are* us, seems to me.
The Fountain - if there's ever been a more engulfing portrayal of grief captured by the medium of film, I've yet to see it. Just stops me dead and puts me in a different place every time I watch it. Stunning, literally, in every way.
Baraka - I think I'll always watch this at some point, every year or two, for the rest of this life. Have yet to see
And a guilty pleasure, apologies in advance:
Casino Royale - yep, the Daniel Craig remake. I don't care that bits of it don't make sense, it just hits all the buttons labeled "I want to be that"!
TV
Breaking Bad - just love it.
The Newsroom - Dunno, I just enjoy it. I'm a sap for long, drawn-out stories that keep on going. Really, it's not about a newsroom. Which I guess makes me more of a sap. Oh well!
But sadly that's it for TV for me - tried to go for Falling Skies, Defiance, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, but when I thought about it they're things I'll watch 'cos they're on', not cos I really *must* watch them.
Guess I need some TV suggestions...!

i would give the walking dead a chance because of the reasons for the two movies you mentioned. it is not just a zombie thing it is actually about what happens to normal people under extreme situations and can they ever come back from it and how good people can turn really nasty, you'd really need to watch from the begginning to se the development
-
Dirty Harry
Resevoir Dogs
Toy Story
MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD
Made In Britain
TV shows....... hmmmmmmmm
Devils Ride is sort of funny.
Auction Hunters
Under The Dome is currently pretty good.
Who's Line Is It Anyway (the firsty 5 or 6 original series')...
Michael Benteen's Potty Time or Monty Python's Flying Circus..... OBVIOUSLY!

Sir, you love Breaking Bad... my God, after a netflix marathon, I'm finally up to date with this bloody amazing show... I do not know how I'm going to make it until next Monday, when the final episode airs...
I don't think my blood pressure will be able to take it.

No, i didn't! thanks for the link.

Did you like the soundtrack?
I think that the soundtrack is awesome, very effective use of gentle keyboards and wonderful piano melodies.
I also like the use of autumn/winter London locations, all the scenes in Mia Farrow's house are especially memorable.
About the ending...
SPOILERS
Did you think that Mia's character went crazy because of her daughter's death or did you think there was really an evil ghost in the house??
The last scene of Julia coming back home and meeting her fate is one of my favourite scenes ever...it's just perfect film making, between the brillant camerawork, the gorgeous music and Mia's out of this world acting.
The ending shot always breaks my heart and disturbs me each time i watch the film...Mia's character finally at peace in her big chair...wow, what a striking picture of loneliness, this last shot looks like a morbid yet strangely beautiful painting.
-
Morning Guillaume.
Yes, the sound track added a lot to the film. Location, I always think the British Victorian house has been very effective for horror or Ghost films. To me liking 1970s British horror films and the Victorian period, the both go together well. Good example, the Hands of the RIpper, 1971 (I think)
Yes the end is powerful and well done. IMO she was loosing her mind, creating her own ghosts. In that respect, it reminds me of the Roman Polanski film, Repulsion-1965
-
Yes, the sound track added a lot to the film.
The main theme is incredible:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dyG13AsY_k
Yes the end is powerful and well done. IMO she was loosing her mind, creating her own ghosts. In that respect, it reminds me of the Roman Polanski film, Repulsion-1965
It was ambiguous...in the basement scene with Julia's husband you see a very fast glimpse of a blonde hair shape fleeing offscreen, probably the evil ghost...i sometimes felt that the ghost possessed Julia to carry out murders...this shot where the old mother at the asylum thinks she recognizes her dead daughter through Julia's eyes is creepy!
Others favourites scenes of mine aside of the unforgettable ending is the very disturbing opening scene, the scene when Julia encounters her new house for the first time, the park scene, also the "dream" scene when child's hands seem to touch Julia's face...haunting.
I must say that the director's intent to not show the "ghost"'s face until the very last scene was a smart move!...the face of the little girl is incredible...pretty, yet so evil.
The camera making (full?) circle around the chair in the last scene was genius, to leave the ambiguity up to the end.
I love all these shots and scenes when Mia Farrow is alone on the screen, with pictures of her dead daughter all around her, lying on the floor...the direction, soundtrack and Mia's acting convey very well Julia's wandering, depressed state of mind.
In that respect, it reminds me of the Roman Polanski film, Repulsion-1965
It has a Polanski feel indeed, also a Jack Clayton one ("The innocents" from the "Turn of the screw" novel)...the main topic ( Parents thinking they see their dead children everywhere and not coming to terms with their sorrow) is also close to Nicolas Roeg's "Don' look now".

So, if any of you lot are all geeky like me and having been enjoying films like 'Avengers', 'Thor', 'Captain America', 'Iron Man' and all of that... what did you make of 'Agents of SHIELD'..?
I thought it was very enjoyable. Not a truly classic show, but it had enough funny Whedon dialogue ('sorry about the dark corner... I think there's a bulb out...') and decent performances from decent actors to make it one worth following.
Anyone?

Thought I'd reactivate this thread...
I just watched FILTH, based on the Irving Welsh bestselling book... what a great film, although not one for the easily-offended. Yes, it's often a bit sick, morally-dubious and frequently offensive on so many levels... it's also insanely funny and does the damn near miraculous trick of turning a truly reprehensible main character into someone genuinely sympathetic towards the end... not read the book, anyone got any opinions?
Probably the best film I've seen this year. :)
-

I did watch Agents of SHIELD with my boys who enjoyed it. I've got to be honest it's not for me. I thought it was very amateurish. There were some pretty ladies in it though 8)

I'm watching Agents Of Shield, Ok I suppose. It's Marvel, what more can you say... ;)
I'm getting ready for Walking Dead season 4 on friday... 8)
Sleepy Hollow is quite good. I'm a sucker for these American series... ::)
American Horror Story back soon... :)

IT'S FRIDAY, getting ready too

I'd like to simply say 'bump'
but while I'm here let me mention a couple that I like - now i have no TV other than vids and dvds so what do i watch?
Well I like Frasier on YouTube
I got some Doctor Who out of the library it was pretty awful - I mean the old stuff was unwatchable - real bad - the newer stuff was cringingely watchable
So that's something I don't like.
I guess really the only thing I like is Fawlty Towers Life of Brian and The Holy Grail.
I remember a movie called the Others which was very good.
erm...
well - one day i'll make a list of the recommendations here and see what i can get from the local library...so there we go - so before this falls away...
Bump!

Knieval, I take it you heard about the big Python reunion, one big show at the o2 in London..?
Much as I love the Pythons, I suspect a big cash-sucking disasterous embarassment... :'(
As for new shows that you might like... I'm going to go along with BREAKING BAD, like so many other people... bloody loved this show. Yes, it's hugely hyped but IMO it's one of the very few shows that truly lives up to the hype. As none other than Anthony Hopkins said, in an open letter, it goes from being an amusing black comedy into a tragedy of truly Shakespearian proportions...
Morally dubious, certainly, but the performances are amazing, it's often funny and often shocking. Give it a go... Netflix offers a free months trial, enough time for you to check it out and decide if it's one for you. I suspect you might thank me for it!

I am inclined to agree with Master Ray about the Python get together.
I loved all the original stuff and the films as well as Fawlty Towers and do you remember Michael Palin in Ripping Yarns... they were brilliant.
However I think that whilst Python was exceptional and ground breaking 35 years ago I can't see it being that good all these years later. I think it will be a bit embarrassing and just a big money making exercise.

The first gig sold out in 43.5 seconds, so there's now going to be a whole run of dates at the O2...
I love MP, but even if I wasn't broke at the moment, I wouldn't be buying a ticket. There's probably going to be no new material, according to them, and lets face it, when was the last time any of them did anything that was actually funny? I saw SPAMALOT in London a few months back and, whilst entertaining, it certainly wasn't a classic...
I don't begrudge them for having one last payday but it won't be coming out of my pocket, thanks.

I agree its a pretty revolting thought - In fact I'm not even going to think about it any longer - just want to say thanks for the netflix tip -and the breaking bad recommendation - I've got a good ten days where I'll be nothing but working and then I'll take a browse around computer land and see if I can figure the netflix subscription - I'll let you know if I manage to watch this programme...
Oh - I thought of another movie I liked - it's called Being there with Peter Sellers and Shirley MacLaine -
In fact anything with Shirley MacLaine is gonna be good...
-
i watched a film that scared me shitless ,last weekend [i love a good fright] the conjuring, really enjoyed the bits where i wasnt hiding behind a cushion. :-* :-*

Barnstoneworth, Barnestoneworth.... ;D

Any of you lot like DEXTER? Friends recommended it to me, just watched the first two episodes on Netflix (trying to fill the gap left by my beloved BREAKING BAD) and really liked it... looks like I've got a few years worth of episodes to catch up on!

I sstumbled across "lady in black" a efw months ago on the tube and loved it. Great early Hammer feel to it and it is creepy. At least to me.

office uk
office us
house of cards uk - mini series, fuckers doing precisely what we know they are doing
house of cards us - makes me feel that America is actually the 5th country in the united kingdom to be honest
only fools and horses
breaking bad - need to watch it again from start to finish
lotr and the hobbit
my mate colin introduced me to two movies I wasn't aware of = the lives of others and one about the badar mienhoff gang. both german language moves but absolutely stunningly good
I watch a lot of series and movies so will post more in a while once I get time to share. don't watch tv anymore. I even waited for the last episodes of breaking bad to air so I could watch them in one sitting. I can't handle all the hype and second guessing and stuff

Here's a list of my recent favorites. I think if a film can move you to tears or make you feel other things, then the filmmaker has succeeded.
The Road (based on the book by Cormac McCarthy)
Howl
Hugo
Trainspotting
The Sweet Hereafter
The Motorcycle Diaries
Billy Elliot
Turtles can fly (Which i believe is an Iraqi film)
Persepolis (Based on the graphic novel)
Babel
Wings of Desire
Pan's Labyrinth ( a visual masterpiece!)
Max (Where Noah Taylor plays a young Hitler)
The Departed.
Films that i can't stand are very violent films such as "Fight club", most Tarantino films and "A clockwork Orange". The first five minutes includes a rape scene with singing. It's sickened me.

As for television,,,very little.
I love the original Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents series.
The first two seasons of the X files and Twin Peaks.
But my favorite television series ever is the early (US) LAW AND ORDER when it had a dragnet sort of feel,,,before all the godawful spin-offs,,,,,,,,,,,,I don't mean the UK series, As I have never seen that series.
I am a Film Junkie, so I'll put some thought into a post on films later.

I am also an absolute film nut, so please post your opinions! Always looking out for a gem that I may not have checked out yet!

The original twilight zone was an awesome series. Pretty creepy for it's time. I'll never forget the necklace that would strangle it's wearer.
I also used to love the "Prisoner" with Patrick McGoohan. I always wanted to visit the village where it was filmed.

If you love the old Twilight Zones, have you seen the Alfred Hitchock Presents episode titled the Glass Eye?,,,,creepy stuff!

No, I haven't seen it. I miss "creepy" films. They don't seem to make them anymore. Everything seems to be over the top gore or viloence. And I love good gore and violence. I think that's why I liked "woman in black" so much. Felt like I was watching an old Hammer film.

bump?

-
