So, I'm always up for hearing some new music, let's get some links going here...
I'll open with the title track of the new Manic Street Preachers album, 'Rewind The Film', which is oddly and mostly sung by Richard Hawley... a gorgeous tune that wouldn't be out of place on an NMA album... whaddya think?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwwtOd3pMlk
No rules to this new thread, but if you can say a few words about it, all the better. Feedback would be also appreciated.
So, what tunes to you want to lay on the rest of us? ;)
-
I do like the idea of this thread.... always looking for new stuff.
Had a listen to that Manics song and on first listen found it quite sad mind you that might be Richard Hawleys voice (love Soldier On). Not quite getting the NMA album fit thing but p'raps that's more of a empathy/story kinda connection?
Something I've got quite into lately is Placebo - Too Many Friends:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKLONjkiL1c
Maybe this should go into the Forum-v-Facebook thread :). But I do think it's a valid commentary on the one dimensional nature of the whole digital communication thing.
Just to lighten things up... How about this purely for the moshing pogoing fun of it - give it a minute or so then it kicks in:

Hey, Anna... love the Placebo track, been into them since the first album... can't wait for the new album next week... and that Dropkicks Murphy song? Brilliant... I might have that when I die and my coffin slides into the crematorium...
Gotta say, I'm a bit perplexed about why a thread about new music should go into the F vs FB forum...
The Manics thing is, IMO, just a beautiful song with a shitload of melancholy... like so many NMA songs... that's all.
Hope you're well! Post some other tracks!
-
I'm a big fan of north American punk rock, so how about a couple that you may not be familiar with.
Dillinger Four - Folk Song. Minneapolis' finest. I flew from London to Minnesota to see these guys 'cos I thought they would never come to he UK again; they came to the UK a year later. Sigh. Still, I love this band:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIYygsepwBQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIYygsepwBQ)
Propagandhi - Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes. Best band ever to come outta Canada. Period.

"I might have that when I die and my coffin slides into the crematorium..." - yep me too!
"Gotta say, I'm a bit perplexed about why a thread about new music should go into the F vs FB forum..." - just thought the song (not thread) fitted that discussion!
"The Manics thing is, IMO, just a beautiful song with a shitload of melancholy... like so many NMA songs... that's all" - Gotcha.
"Post some other tracks!" - Will do idc right now in a classical vibe tho' Fur Elise & Toccata in D minor last 2 I listened to!!!
@ Berko-Kev: Ska/reggae type stuff not usually my cup of tea but liking that Movin On song - will have a proper listen tomorrow when can crank it up, bit late tonight miserable neighbours would be banging on the door within seconds!
-
Here's one by the excellent Glasvegas, 'Daddy's Gone', great lyrics and a truly gorgeous tune...

Yay, thanks for posting this one ldopas. I'm a big fan of Kings X, but I haven't yet got round to checking out any of Dug's (or Ty's if it comes to that) solo stuff, and I have been meaning to. Have you got Dug's new album by any chance?

Right. I've got two, and they couldn't be more different.

Second:
Kate Miller-Heidke - The Devil Wears A Suit
Beautiful, gentle, haunting. All her other stuff is worth a listen, too. She's another of my favourite artists.

"William Tell Overture" from album "Spike Jones Is Murdering The Classics", narrated by Doodles Weaver. (This always has me in stitches!)
http://www.spikejones.net/download.php?30.list.4.10.download_datestamp.DESC
LYRICS:
It's a beautiful day for the race. Stu Chan is the favourite today, Assault is in there, Dog Biscuit is 3 to 1, Safety Pin has been scratched, and at 20 to 1: Feitlebaum. Now the horses are approaching the starting gate, and eh, THERE THEY GOOOOOO!
And it's Stu Chan going to the front, Cabbage is second on the rail, Beautiful Linda is third by a length, and... Feitlebaum. Around the first turn Stu Chan is still in front, Cabbage is second by a head (Cabbage by a head!), Beautiful Linda is third and... Feitlebaum. Into the back stretch, Dog Biscuit is now leading the pack, Lady Avalon is second, very close. Banana is coming up through the bunch (Banana coming up through the bunch! )... and Feitlebaum. At the half Stu Chan still out in the front, Apartment House is second with plenty of room, Assault is passing Battery (Assault and Battery!), Notary's Old Jack is fourth, and in last place by ten lengths I believe it is, yes, it is Feitlebaum. Around the turn, heading for home, it's Stu Chan and Dog Biscuit – here they come – and Girdle in the stretch. And Mother-In-Law nagging in the rear (Oh! Oh! Oh!). And now they come down to the wire, and it's number 1 and now number 2 and it's very close, it'll either be a photo finish or an oil painting, and now Louis speaks with the left, and Louis is in there, slugging, and it's a battle, and now they are tearing hair, there's hair all over the ring, there's hair all over the place, I don't know whose hair it is. It's mine! AND THERE GOES THE WINNERRRRRRRRR! Feitlebaum. :D

The Lost Boys:No Kisses
released on Nov 1st, recorded in Wellers studio
If ya like it please download it.
They've just supported Paul Weller at Hammersmith Apollo last Saturday( he personally invited them to play), not bad for a young band, no record contract or manager :)

Rise Against - Satellite.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nQCxwneUwA
Not a bad one. Positive way in its mood & drive... You're lucky if your kid listens to that kind of stuff. That actually reminds me about a musical taste of couple of my friends: Rancid, Bad Religion, No Use for a Name etc. (I used to listen some BR in start of nineties too.) Are they from UK? The scene's historical backgrounds is quite known about being from States... But I have to say I'm rather more into the raw early eighties era pre-SxE hc like Minor Threat/Government Issue/Youth Brigade/State of Alert and maybe the first three albums BR did.
Ok. Here goes the next song/video:
Mantis - Kimmo Pohjonen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOcrsaVV5MI)
The song is from album & DVD Kalmuk symphony, arranged with Tapiola Sinfonietta and Abdissa Assefa.
Kimmo Pohjonen from Finland is a master at accordion playing and adds to his songs experimental aspects. Played with numerous widely known artists such as King Crimson & Kronos Quartet. His influences lie in old traditional Finnish folk music as well as in punk a little bit. Kimmo is often known as a genius with using mics in accordion, drumming to them, playing looped the stuff live, while using foot pedals with effects and singing at the same time. (Some of you know maybe a movie called Jade Warrior? The music in the movie is made by Kimmo too.)
KEYWORDS: folk, symphony, traditions, shamanistic, Finno-Ugrian, experimental

Wow. I like that. Where did you find this guy?
I saw that Greg Dulli (frontman of Afgan Whigs and Twilight Singers) posted some youtube videos of him on his site. I then found out that he was playing live in Nashville a few weeks after that and checked him out. Good stuff.
Speaking of Greg Dulli, here's a couple of my favorite songs from him:
Sublime - Twilight Singers (http://youtu.be/reSHvioErIk)
Teenage Wristband - Twilight Singers (http://youtu.be/1EbF1L7D2BY)

I think I've mentioned on a few occasions that I'm a big fan of Fish (yes, that bloke who used to be in Marillion...) and I'm loving this song, 'Blind To The Beautiful' from his newest album...
Great lyrics and, if I can be so bold, I can imagine JS's voice on this one... see what you think.

too much modern day indie influence in reverse. I always wondered where that came from. now I know.
nah. nirvana are the only ones i'd like.
EDIT: and I really appreciate the fact that you shared that with me.
-
It's odd how so many bands of different styles got thrown in with the whole 'grunge' thing... I think the big three were basically regarded as Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden... three bands with wildly different styles.
For the record, I really like Nirvana (although my fave album of theirs is the acoustic one), Pearl Jam I can take or leave dependant on what song is playing (plenty of good stuff, though) And I am rather fond of Soundgarden ('Superunknown' is a bloody classic...)
-
I thought Mudhoney were one of the big original grunge bands. After all, the lead singer Mark Arm was has been credited with coming up with the term "grunge"
Don't get me wrong, I like mudhoney, a lot, but LOVE Nirvana.

Top Banana, Heno, that is exactly how I feel. For me, being an NMA fan is something special, and as such, I am happy to listen to the ramblings / opinions of fellow followers on any subject.
I consider myself quite a private person in general, but here, I am comfortable to think ,, what the ****,, let it out, the people listing here are good ;)

This might have been posted somewhere by someone else but I still listen to "blues funeral" by Mark Lanegan all the time. It totally blew me away when I heard it while hanging in a record store. has to be one of the best albums released in years.

Heard this song on the John Robb radio show on Team Rock Radio http://www.teamrockradio.com/ a couple of weeks back and really liked it. You can get the last 5 shows which are well worth a listen from the On Demand section of the website. Think this song was from the 23rd Feb one.

The Dambuilders, song Myron's Girlfriend (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=QHgYv_NwR6o#t=14).
Recommend. An indie band originally from Hawaii and moved later on to Boston. Saw them once in -93, in Helsinki. Dambuilders Started in 1989, and broke up in 1998. Really worth to listen, if you were/are into something that reminds a bit of Teenage Fanclub, Dinosaur Jr, or softier version of Mudhoney.

This is a wee Ayrshire band from a tiny place called Lugton properly best known locally for its signal box even though its so small the doesn't stop there
Ok these guys made on the Tube and have supported the Pogues on a European tour and had a record deal. I first seen them in local youth clubs etc and thought wow these guys are mental I later became friends with them whilst staying in London and still see them from time to time locally Anyway here the link hope you enjoy a bit of Ayrshire folk/punk

That might be it, I was well into Catherine Wheel and saw 'em live a few times... a rather forgotten band nowadays, although quite popular back in the 90's. I think they were bigger in the US than the UK..?

Yeah - Was a big fan of them and Swervedriver, two bands that didn't really fit into the sound that was hitting it big in the UK. Guess we were more into the guitar sound that both bands were great at. Creation re-released Ferment a few years back with all the b-sides. Wish the same would happen for Chrome. An all time fav of mine.
Swervedriver: Duress (http://youtu.be/IXmn-p6x9wc) and Last train to Satansville (http://youtu.be/JFW1Hu35tsw)

Alabama 3 are probably my favourite band after NMA, and I probably play their stuff even more often than NMA tracks...
When the Rev died a few weeks ago I decided to revisit the bits of their back catalogue I may have neglected... I now have a new favourite album!
"Shoplifting 4 Jesus" is a real gem, it takes a little getting used to compared to the other stuff...is it a concept album? Is it a mashup? Is it the soundtrack for some bizarre musical?
Every track has something to love... can honestly say I've never heard anything quite like it.
Love singing this in the shower too!!!

sorry that i left you confused, but i was referring to your signature: "bah. humbug." and i thought you have taken that from the movie "baron munchhausen" by terry gilliam in which munchausen once says exactly that. so i quoted another phrase from that movie "is there a doctor in the fish?" 8)

ahhhh, i see...! (strange but true - i downloaded that movie just 2-ish weeks back, just haven't yet watched it again). my reason for the signature was a bit pedestrian, being honest - i just hit 50 a couple of weeks back so decided to wallow in grumpiness.
as for the vodka limit, it was a nice idea but i don't honestly think it's going to catch on..!

Here i want to recommend the last two albums by "The Sword" for you. That's why i dug out this thread, could have posted it in on the "what you listen to right now" one, but i wnat to explain, why i think that some of you might quite like this. At least i'm curious if you like it...
So i discovered The Sword some years ago, saw them live two times in a very small club in cologne and they just fckn rock! They are known as a heavy metal band but they changed their sound quite a bit in the last albums.
I got me "High Country" by them, wasn't really disappointed but couldn't get into it. Played some favourite tunes but then left it behind for a long while.
Then recently i came back to it, just wanted to hear the first two songs and suddenly i was just amazed. Such a beautiful work of fantastic guitar music.
I think it was so important to leave all expectations of heavy metal energy behind and stop comparing it to the earlier works, that i was able to get. It's still riffy, it still has energy, but the music really changed.
Then i had to order the last album and that was a burner from the start! Now i play those two albums constantly and they get better and better. Saw a live clip of The Sword performing mostly the tunes from those albums, with some old stuff and that was very amazing.
To me the experience of discovering those new sounds remind me of some nma discoverys, like don't liking a tune which laterbecomes my favourite. Also the songs and sounds, the way they write their songs seem to me totally unique by both bands. Also these albums are like concept albums, heard the best from beginning to end and they take time to get into.
Well, in my opinion...
I think you can find here some great music, don't know which genre exactly, you have to find that for yourself.

Bob Vylan - We Live Here - fantastic and powerful stuff !!

-
Liked that a lot........
-
Yeah, Bob Vylan is cool!
Wondered if you Ghosttrain meant that or The Sword..?
-
Bob Vylan............i thought it was very powerful...
-
Just received The Sword - Low Country, it's like an acoustic version of High Country, but more of a whole new interpretation.
Fantastic! 8)
Since we all await eagerly the arrival of the Carnival Redux version, which will be more than a pure remastering, i think i'd post some examples of another re-imagining of an album.

Here are the lyrics to water:
Ich sinke immer tiefer, dem grund immer näher
meine hände taub, die beine schwer
hol mich bitte wieder jemand hoch is mir egal wer
hol mich bitte wieder jemand hoch is mir egal wer
einsam unterwasser
schweben in die unendlichkeit
menschenhüllen weit und breit
(Weit)
nur ein fisch von vielen
Wer stirbt wird ersetzt (ersetzt)
unser lächeln und glück (Formalitäten)
aufgesetzt
wir schmelzen das eis
alle zusammen (zusamm zusamm)
die gesellschaft bleibt
intolerant
das ewige blau
die Quelle des lebens (Lebens)
und wir rotten es aus (warum)
das ist leben
Ich sinke immer tiefer, dem grund immer näher
meine hände taub, die beine schwer
hol mich bitte wieder jemand hoch is mir egal wer
And here the goole translator at work:
I'm sinking ever deeper, ever closer to the bottom
my hands numb, my legs heavy
someone please get me up again I don't care who
I thought we were all in the same boat
All together we can get through it
but unfortunately it is not one for all and all for one
but each to himself the next
shit happens
I thought at first it will work again
but the days go by, those who are left cold learn to stand alone in the subway every morning
it is like it is we have lost sight of each other, no one has bent over backwards for the other i am lying here on the roof of noah's ark
but feel alone like robinson cruso
on fridays my best friend no longer comes
I wait for work on monday every weekend, nobody talks but at least it feels like companionship
and when I am alone I crouch in front of the telly and watch a horror film then at least I have the feeling that I am no longer alone
I'm sinking ever deeper, ever closer to the bottom
my hands numb, my legs heavy
someone please get me up again I don't care who
lonely underwater
float into infinity
human shells far and wide
(Far)
just one fish out of many
Who dies is replaced (replaced)
our smile and happiness (formalities)
put on
we melt the ice
all together (together together)
society remains
intolerant
the eternal blue
the source of life (life)
and we root it out (why)
this is life
I'm sinking ever deeper, ever closer to the bottom
my hands numb, my legs heavy
someone please get me up again I don't care who
