EIGHT (2000)
or
CARNIVAL (2005)
or
HIGH (2007)
or
TODAY IS A GOOD DAY (20O9)
or
BETWEEN DOG AND WOLF ( 2013)
?
;)
-
Easy: Today Is A Good Day. 2nd spot Carnival, probably followed by 8.
-
1.Between Dog and Wolf
2.High
3.Carnival
4 Eight
5.TIAGD
Darned difficult as 3 of my 4 fave albums are in that list!
-
Very difficult...
1) HIGH because of the catchy choruses, the immediacy, the lyrics..."High", "Into the wind", "Rivers", "Dawn", "Bloodsports", "One of the chosen", "No mirror no shadow"...i think the album is very close to the top of NMA's career, alongside the unmatchable "Thunder and consolation".
2) EIGHT...because after the uneven STRANGE BROTHERHOOD, this album full of experiments, EIGHT was a welcome return to NMA's vitality and "simple" storytelling, immediate catchy songs...because of "You weren't there", "Orange tree roads", "Someone Like Jesus", "Snelsmore wood" and "Leeds road 3AM"
3) BETWEEN DOG AND WOLF: really to early to rate this album fairly...it's not a perfect album but i rate it in the 3rd place because of the classic NMA stuff ( "March in September", "Seven times", "Between dog and wolf") and the more introspective, moving stuff ( "Pull the sun", "I need more time", "Did you make it safe?") and the cinematic oddity of "Qasr El Nil Bridge".
4) TODAY IS A GOOD DAY
and
5) CARNIVAL
Both quite good albums but a bit uneven.
-
1 Eight
2 High
3 Between Dog and Wolf
4 TIAGD
5 Carnival
-
Favourite has to be Lost Songs and Abandonded....... then......
Today Is A Good
High
Carnival
Eight
I'm not counting Dog n Wolf yet..... too soon to be objective enough....
-
I agree with Stoney's chart list..so to speak. Have listened to BDAW several times now and can't rate it yet. At this point it feels very "grown up" and well arranged/produced. Its very percussive (wink wink to Mr Dean!!!), and I really like that.
I still think it doesn't sound like a typical NMA album...but I suspect the band were kind of aiming for that?
Still...all good stuff!
-
Shit, it's almost as bad as 'Sophies Choice'...
:-\
-
It is way to early to rate BDaW but, as things stand:
1. BDaW
2. Eight
3. High
4. TiaGD
5. Carnival
-
For me it's
1.BDAW
2.High
3.TIAGD
4.Carnival
5.Eight
-
OK...
High
BDAW
TIAGD
Eight
Carnival
???
-
Difficult to judge BDAW so early, but think it will always be in the top 3....
As of now:
1 BDAW
2 Eight
3 TIAGD
4 High
5 Carnival
:)
-
1. High/TIAGD
3. Carnival
4. BDAW
5. Eight
I simply cant choose a definitive 1st place between High and TIAGD. Utterly magnificent, and it just depends on the day which one suits my mood more.
Carnival took me a looooong time to unlock- I actively disliked it on its release, but it has proven to be one of the most rewarding albums I own, and Red Earth is for me, one of the all time great NMA moments.
BDAW would have come 5th until this evenings drive to work when it suddenly started to reveal itself to me more, and I started hearing what it is, as opposed to being aware of what it isnt. I am pretty sure it will ever rise higher up this list as there is nothing on it that speaks to me as strongly as the albums above it, but it could suprise me in time.
Eight I really like, but of all NMA albums, its the only one I cant put on repeat. When I have the urge to listen to it, once is enough, whilst the others in this list, I will leave looping in the car for days on end when the need arises.
-
Shit, it's almost as bad as 'Sophies Choice'...
:-\
heheh - thanks Ray - you nailed it!
I do want to say here though that I think Dog is their best record yet.
-
Really struggled with this, cos each has one or more of my favourite tracks on it.
That said, keeping to one album as a single work, I'd say:
1) BDAW
2) High
3) Eight
4) Carnival
5) TIAGD
Fave songs?
Into The Wind
Red Earth
Leeds Road 3am
Wipeout
North Star
-
It's way too early to rate it, but for my money as of now:
Carnival
Eight
High
TIAGD
BDAW
I like them all and I am struggling with the middle three, TIAGD might be above High on a different day, and even Eight, tho I do have a soft spot for that album.
-
High.
Between Dog & Wolf
Eight
Today is a Good Day
Carnival.
8)
-
For me it would have to be,,,
1. Carnival
2. Between Dog and Wolf
3. Today is a Good Day
4. Eight
5. High
Carnival and Ghost of Cain are my two absolute faves.
-
1 Between Dog and Wolf
2 Eight
3 High
4 Carnival
5 Today Is A Good Day
-
almost impossible to choose so:
Between Dog and Wolf (2013)
Today Is A Good Day (2009)
High (2007)
Carnival (2005)
Eight (2000)
-
1. Between Dog and Wolf
2. Eight
3. TIAGD
4. High
5.Carnival

Now that the newness of BDAW has worn off and my opinion of it has changed/settled, here goes again, with a little more detail this time:
High/Today is a Good Day - These albums feel like two sides of the same coin to me. Maybe that's down to Chris Kimsey but whatever the reason, I can't listen to one of them without having to put the other on straight after. These two albums would round out my Top 5 overall, I reckon.
Between Dog and Wolf - The initial shine has worn off and I don't think it stands up as well to repeated listening. To me it needs more guitars and an up-tempo song or two to give it more ebb and flow. As it stands it is a little one-paced.
Carnival - I've always found it hard to listen to this end-to-end without my mind drifting off. There simply aren't enough strong songs to keep my attention. Water is the only song I could name off this album without looking at the track listing, even though I've listened to it half-a-dozen times in the last month or so (in an effort to get into it more).
Eight - Like Carnival, I find it hard to pay attention to this album from beginning to end. To be fair, I only bought it recently but I can't see my opinion of it changing much.
-
Carnival
Eight
High
BDAW
TIAGD
I put TIAGD fifth, but honestly States Radio and Autumn are among my all time favourite nma tracks. And I put Carnival first, even though I always skip past Carlisle Rd and Water doesn't do a whole lot for me. Hard to choose, especially since Wipeout on Eight probably is my all time favourite track. I used to sell ice cream and doughnuts on the Atlantic coast of France when I were a young sprout, and I remember diving into the waves on particularly hot days and getting sucked down into the trough, scraped across the seabed, dragged up to the crest and then being just hurled up onto the beach. That's what Wipeout feels like to me, and Justin's dead right, it's exactly how love feels. I can listen to that track all day.
So, yeah. Carnival. The music, for the most part is really hooky and compelling - DB may not have been the rockiest, but he remains my favourite NMA guitarist, and Justin's writing on it is consistently strong. BD3 and BlueBeat, Red Earth, Another Imperial Day, Island and Fireworks Night - it's just so good! I find I'm not listening to the earlier stuff as much as I used to, fine, angsty stuff that it is, and I think that's because I'm finding the later stuff is just more fully realised. If that makes sense.
-
I checked your rates too long... But if I try to be honest:
(none of my choices are choosed as "better than the second one")
- High (was a very welcomed album to me at a time when we suddenly could get to more NMA shows, travelling and moving to new place) It's still a favourite while I'm driving long distances or maybe getting a bit deep-hearted - along with the F**K Texas Sing with Us versions of High songs.
- TIAGD (somewhat different style here but kept nicely personal and authentic new way again) Tiagd has also some some songs that are enormously getting nearer to the loud and somewhat angry singalong type of such "folky" classics as The Charge.
- Eight (bought this as late as after TIAGD and thought "what have we missed then at the time they released it!") What a wonderful album full of energy, light and power.
I don't have BDAW yet (or even Carnival). It's interesting to hear BDAW songs at the tour soon!
-
Eight, (in my opinion a masterpiece)
followed by high,
I hardly here never carnival, and only when i drive today is a good day.
have to wait how between dog and wolf will develop.
-
High, of course. :)
-
BDAW
Eight & High are classic albums in my opinion
TIAGD
Carnival
-
Still HIGH, after all these years...
1 HIGH
2 EIGHT
3 BETWEEN WINE AND BLOOD
4 BETWEEN DOG AND WOLF
5 FROM HERE
6 CARNIVAL
7 TODAY IS A GOOD DAY
8 WINTER
-
Yes, a thread that needs re-looking at Guillaume
Based on more recent listening habits, I will go --
1 FROM HERE
2 HIGH
3 EIGHT
4 WINTER
5 BETWEEN WINE AND BLOOD
6 TODAY IS A GOOD DAY
7 CARNIVAL
8 BETWEEN DOG AND WOLF
-
Well, it's always nice to see a thread rebooted!
My opinion?
1 - High
2 - Winter
3 - From Here
4 - Today Is A Good Day
5 - Eight
6 - Between Dog And Wolf
7 - Carnival
8 - Between Wine And Blood.
:)
-
High and Eight I tend to listen to as two sides of the same record. Same with BDAW and Between Wine and Blood, which I find not as accessible, but deeper and maybe more satisfying.
I like Today is a Good Day for its slightly more straightforward rocky feel, and a "travelling" vibe (lots of US/maritime references).
Winter, again not a comfortable listen, but artistically brilliant.
Carnival doesn't get played as much as the others, but Fireworks Night... what a song!
From Here - some brilliant observations and ideas. Overall, it's more about the energy, rhythm and lyrics for me than the melodies.
I can't really rank them.. Carnival a close second, everything else first.
-
These kinds of NMA-related threads are absolute torture for me, really! :( Hard as I try, I can never pick just one release as the best, or the one blah, blah, blah. Super crazy about them all. nervous lol, so much so that I have proper legit back-up copies of ALL of them, well, except "Eight". You know just in case I lend them out or wear them down, I need a back-up or two, or three, or five! :D embarrassed soft lol, yes I am a fcuked up individual.... no need to question or ask, it's a given! :)
Beginning with, and in the order that they were made and delivered unto us, "Carnival" (2005), "High" (2007), "Today Is a Good Day" (2009), "Between Dog and Wolf" (2013), "Between Wine and Blood" (2014), "Winter" (2016), "From Here" (2019) seem to all contain a running thread. A lot of the songs could be chapters in a book, snap-shots out of life, or even journal entries. But, it could honestly be that I'm just seeing, feeling, and hearing things that probably aren't even there in the first place... :-[ which wouldn't be the first time either, but I just can't shake what I see, feel, hear... sorry. xxxxx
The afore mentioned seven NMA albums, plus the US version of the BD3 EP, particularly, are each releases that completely shook-up my world, and how I saw it, see it, move through it, interpret it. Thought I loved music, but these extremely special 8 NMA recordings have gone deeper into me than any one being could ever dream or hope to go. Never in the world did I think music could affect and move me to the degree and level that it has done so, via NMA/JS' works, but they did the unfathomable, impossible. NMA/JS managed to do what no other bands/artists have managed to do, achieve. They've gone where no one else, will ever, ever go. I'll love, cherish and treasure them forever because of this gift / these gifts, this truth, enlightenment. Sacred stuff, and stuff of the 'GOD's', for sure. Never mind magic, NMA/JS are SO far past, gifted and above, magic. 8)
To me, NMA's release "From Here" (2019) also feels and plays like the second part to Mr. Sullivan's masterful solo effort "Navigating By The Stars" (2003). If ever there existed A New Model Army album that was full-sibling, twin flame, companion, OR follow-up to JS' solo record, I'd say it's non other than NMA's most recent offering, "From Here" (2019). Originally anticipating a different kind of NMA album, at first... but just a few song into "From Here", I began to see, feel and hear it, for the diamond that it truly is! There's definitely an unshakeable connection between the two magnificent albums, "Navigating By The Stars" and "From Here", which for me, initially, was a bit surprising, especially because there is a 16-year or so, gap between the two releases. Highly recommend playing "Navigating By The Stars" and "From Here" from start to finish, in the order that they were made, released. Go, see if the links, ties and similarities jump out at you too. Undeniably gorgeous!!! 8)
There has never been a better time to follow NMA/JS' work, as right now. Just when I think NMA/JS can't stun me any further, deeper, with each new full-length recording, they always floor me speechless, by doing just that! One would think I would have learned that lesson by now, but nope. ::)
NMA/JS have got IT, even still, after all these years! And then some, I should add!! Love 'em... love them! xxxxx

you are right...the lyrics and sounds of some of the songs like "Conversation", "Maps", "Setting sun" would have been at home in "Navigating by the stars". I like "From here", but i think "Navigating by the stars" is probably Justin's masterpiece.

I know I've said this before, but I've turned a lot of people onto NMA via another bands online forum... and, bearing in mind that these people don't have our nostalgic memories of when we were young, I can confirm that the majority of those music fans prefer everything from 'High' onwards...
There has never been a better time to follow NMA/JS' work, as right now... Damn straight, 8! :D

interesting...does it mean that they find the sound and/or lyrics of the 80's, 90"s and early and mid 2000's albums more "dated", not aging well? unlike the last 5/6 albums?
An interesting thread (i've already posted) from at least two fans, a new one who prefer the Stuart Morrow era and another old fan who haven't listened the band for almost 30 years and was very surprised by the sound and quality of the last albums...:

G, mate, it's as simple as they just like the songs better. Maybe it's about production values for the very early stuff, I just think they find the later music more diverse and interesting. As do I!
But nobody's wrong in this debate. I've met people at NMA gigs who freely admit that they're just there for the old stuff and fair enough.

TODAY IS A GOOD DAY (20O9)
EIGHT (2000)
UNBROKEN (2024)
