Are there any types of music or artists that you do not like at all?
Or bands that you should like based on your musical preference but you just don't?
I don't mean the obvious like One Direction, I mean true artists who actually write their own songs.
-
I listen to a lot of different music, I´m not a friend of classic, opera or free jazz, but I really dislike something, that`s called in Germany Volksmusik, Musikantenstadl (that`s not folk music!), Schlager (that`s not popmusic!) with german lyrics about " I love him/her, but he/she doesn`t or live is great/bad because of love - mostly solo artists
and I dislike a lot of german bands with the kind of lyrics "the world is a bad place, my life is a torture, I feel soo bad, because he/she/the world doesn`t understand me" - kindergarten themes and not about real problems
and yes, to mention a name of a special dislike: D. Bohlen ;D
-
If I'm fair I do not dislike any kind of music. While others may be disturbed about stuff you hear on the radio, it (music) doesn't bother me. There are lots of stuff that do NOT make an impression on me in anyway, but I still can listen to them. I could even to think about the song and its contents.
I tend to like to listen something all the time, whether I'm outside doing something, woke up and need some background "noise", news, whatever or driving a car... But when I'm in need of some particular artist I really DO like; I don't want anything to come to disturb it. That's a sacred moment for me.
In general, that tells a lot of what kind of person I am.
-
OK... I not keen on Bob Dylan. Yes, the odd song I like (Tangled Up In Blue, for example), but otherwise, it's a struggle...
This makes me laugh, though...

Personally, I can't listen to any thing that is only screaming. I am not talking about passionate, angry music but just screaming. In the 2,000s a genre surfaced called "Screamo" and it is exactly what it sounds. I can not listen to that, it does nothing for me. I can't say that I dislike all metal, some is wonderful, but Metallica and other bands are a turn off for me.
I could list a lot of bands that are a musical turn off but it may piss people off. I have learned that people can be ultra-sensitive about their favorite bands.

I am always listening to some sort of music too. Certain bands/ Songs/ albums can feel like a spiritual moment.
6 or so years ago (When I first heard NMA) is was like that. Just recently i heard a band called "The National" for the first time and it was slightly similar but not quite as powerful.
When I love music or a certain artists, I tend to really, really love them. If i dislike the music, i can feel the exact opposite. Of course the majority of music is the in middle but certain things make me feel passion in either a fantastic way or to the point where listening to it seems like torture.
I love music and talking about it.
-
I try not to dislike anything each to their own and all that.
But 1 type of music that i dislike most is that happy hardcore you know where they have took a song and basically speeded it up with really fast bpm drums and it sounds like the chipmunks on helium, i just think Gawd where is talent and skill in that luckily you don't seem to get as much of it these days.
-
OK. Coldplay. ******* Coldplay, every time...
I really do not understand the appeal of this band. Yes, there is the odd song, here and there, that I quite like... 'The Scientist' is a nice ballad, 'Viva La Vida' reminds me of a fun night I had in Chicago and 'Clocks' has a good piano / guitar tune... but beyond that, I'm struggling. Yet they're probably the biggest band in the world right now!
One direction... don't like them at all, but they're aimed at 12 year old girls and I'm (obviously) not one of them, but 12 year old girls are people too and they deserve the music that makes them happy. Likewise, Westlife... can't stand them but my Mum loves them, so fair enough!
Coldplay seem to have taken over as the new U2, the stadium and of choice for people who really aren't that much into music... I know a lot of people hate U2, but at least their stuff sounds like it has some guts behind it(Achtung Baby is a terrific album and I really like 'Where The streets Have No Name' and 'Bullet The Blue Sky'... and 'With Or Without You' is a superb ballad) but Coldplay seem to have taken that blueprint and drained every last drop of bollocks and 'passion' out of it, serving up a setlist of dreary, whiny-assed crap that, for me, goes into one ear and dribbles out of the other, leaving nothing in the memory other than 'damn, I hate Coldplay'...
But if you're still not convinced, read this, the funniest music review I ever read, all about their new album...

well.....I dislike very little except pop. really can't get any of it. and when I say pop that's not really right. I can listen to the bee gees, abba, any amount of soul or even hip hop or most genres except pop. so boy bands, girl bands, that marty pella fella out of that band and the ones done by people like terry wogan and gazza and john barnes to name just a few
-

I see. In start of millenium there was a huge promotion work for them. A totally overproduced band I think. They even got some ugly merchandise in newspapers during the Iraq war when it was said that the soldiers had a pause at battlefields and they could listen to...Coldplay...inside the tanks. Really. >:(

Jazz - what is the point of Jazz? Boring awful endless noodling for the sake of it, never does anyone even play the same ******* song as anyone else on the stage yet somehow it's regarded as some superior art form - bollox it's awful and anyone who likes it should be shot immediately on the grounds that obviously there is a profound short circuit in their brain and it would be kinder to put them out of their misery.
And I can't stand Reggae & Dub either. Drone, drone, drone, On, and on, and on , bored, bored, bored. Unlike Jazz tho' I do at least see the value in it. Mates love it and apparently I have heard some of the really good stuff during attempts to cure me with bouts of Aural Shock Therapy but nope, just leaves me cold with not so much as the slightest nodding head groove thang going on.
That's just me tho !
Oh and don't get me started on those grim po-faced northern clog wearing crusty folk rockers New Model Army.........

Hmmm.. lot of hate for Mr McCartney... I know the fashionable thing to do is to say that Mr Lennon was the talented one from The Beatles... but, God, Lennon did some shitting-awful stuff, especially when linked up with that Ono woman... ???

That's the Plastic Ono band... wow, I'll listen to Mull Of Kintyre on a loop whilst punching myself in the **** rather than listen to that bullshit again...

I have to ask what happened to you to make you hate jazz so much?
I love new model army,Beatles,Cream, jethro Tull, Dead Kennedy's, UK Subs,KMFDM, and I love Count Basie, Coleman Hawkins,McCoy Tyner, and a whole lot of other jazz groups. Not all jazz is long meandering solos just like not all rock sounds like Led Zeppelin or Cold play. What jazz have to listened to?

Before we get back to 'music that you dislike', can I just add 'Maybe I'm Amazed' and 'My Love' to the list of McCartney songs that are really excellent..?

There was a c-word ban? So lets try it.. Shush you are an utter ****... ;) ;D
Yup, that was blanked out! So lets try ****** and ****...
Yeah, those are still banned words... anyone got any other words that are too offensive for an NMA Forum?
;D ;D ;D

Thanks mate, using me to vent you're spleen. utter c**t noted ;D
but then again, we are a right pair of cunts :D

So, if you add an 's' to the end of the banned word, it gets past the swearbot?
Lets try it... Wankers! Cocks!
Yup, that works!

Don't forget twats

A horrific band that was also part of the Sonicsphere Festival that NMA played. Slayer. It sounds like pointless screaming.

Great guitar work, though. I think Slayer are an acquired taste.
Here's Napalm Death. They make Slayer sound like Kylie Minogue...

That is an actual song, not a cough...

People who like metal probably love them. Metal is not so much my thing though I do like a few classic metal bands. IT's a very broad genre.
-
OK, pumping this thread back to life... Ed Sheeran. The biggest selling album of this year so far... and it's just shit... not quite as bad as the latest Coldplay album but quite close...
Album sales are falling into the toilet, yet this guy gets massive sales..? ???
It seems like people buy this shit because it's the 'thing to do' and if the general population have nothing to buy until the next X-Factor winner shoves some product out then this will do... God forbid that you won't have this CD when everyone else you know does have it!?!
It's music for people who don't really like music...
>:(
-
Ive not heard Eds lp so don't want to judge him The bits n pieces ive heard via tv have seen pretty banal n boring The only credit i would give him is he wasn't on the x factor etc Nobody i know has his record for sure
-
Coldplay and U2. The most boring, banal, vacuous music out there. Just my opinion, obviously, because most of the rest of the world seems to think they're brilliant. :-\
-
U2 have done some good lps Boy,War,Rattle and hum,Achtung baby
Ok Bono maybe a bit of ****** but his hearts in the right place
-
Agree on the whole U2 thing... Achtung Baby is a fantastic album...
-
I've tried, but I just can't get into U2. Not my thing at all, so I gave up trying.
-
I have actually never heard one song by Ed Sheeren or if I did, it was not memorable enough to recall.
Coldplay's early albums did not seem that bad, their new stuff is sounds like crap in my opinion. I like early U2 especially the albums "War' and "Boy".
-
I've tried, but I just can't get into U2. Not my thing at all, so I gave up trying.
I'm with you Sozbot. Never really liked U2. Used to dislike them a lot in the 80s. That said, some of their 90s stuff was interesting like Discotheque. I do admit the man can sing, the Edge is a great guitar player.
-
I like to think I'm very open minded with music (and else) but when I seriously think about it there's really a lot of it I dislike, although it doesn't always relate to the style but just to individual bands.
First of all I listen to so much different stuff, from John Coltrane to Rage Against The Machine, from John Dowland to Kraftwerk... I'm a musician myself, so it does make sense to stay alert and not ignore a good piece of music, whatever direction it comes from.
But there's certainly styles of music I can relate to more, and some I cannot comunicate at all.
I don't really like American hard rock music, bands like Aerosmith, Guns 'n Roses, Van Halen, Rush and all those 80's hair metal dudes. I don't like Whitesnake, Scorpions etc.
On the other hand I have plenty of respect and love for a bit older blues rock bands like The Taste, Free, Humble Pie...
Most of the stuff I go for is acoustic, like Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Cohen, Tim Buckley, but I also love a good distorted guitar sometimes, like all those Crazy Horse records by Neil Young or the Pixies, or Dead Kennedy's.
When it comes to jazz there's a lot of stuff I love there, but there's also one thing I dislike very much and it's called "jazz snobism", it appears in many forms and shapes and is very easily recognizable.
I see a lot of people mentioned Coldplay here as one of the bands very much disliked. I actualy loved the first album, especially the song called "Spies", but I do agree that in the meantime they've been producing mostly rubish.

I can't decide whether a lyric like 'I suppose a rock is out of the question' is a humourous winky-nod to the banality of this genre of music, tongue in cheek and that, or a band who truly believe shit like that would go down well 'wiv da kids'...
Not a fan of DL, but I have to admire a band who refuse to replace their drummer even when he lost an arm in a car crash... that's proper friendship for you. :-[

Jazz.... I cant stand modern Jazz. It sounds like someone doing the 23.76 times table in a self-congratulatory style.

Nod back to ricka earlier in the thread - sorry fella, no idea what jazz I've heard cos my Dad used to listen to stuff when I was young. Maybe it stems from some long car journey when it was inflicted on us ;D

Rap
Misogynistic, homophobic, sometimes racist, generally shit. The view of women is in my view particularly degrading.
Not that there isn't some good rap. Just not very much.

Gonna bump this this... now I don't strictly hate rap music. A lot of it is very good... Public Enemy did some fine, socially aware and truly interesting stuff that really reflected the times that those tracks were written in.
But NWA... a huge cinema hit last year was their bio-pic 'Straight Outta Compton', quite a good film IMO, but wow, did it skirt certain issues. Yes, they were controversial and I can understand how songs like 'Fuk Da Police' were written and became so popular... kids buying it because they were being all rebellious and stuff...
But those same kids were listening to tunes like 'One Less B itch', 'She Swallowed it' and 'Findum, Fuckum And Flee'... not gonna post them here, but damn, that stuff is just awful and horrendously misogynistic...
Yes, bands like Guns and Roses and Motley Crue did songs about sex, not all of it 'PC', obviously, but it's like Justin Beiber compared to that horrendous stuff!
Can you imagine a white rock band having an acclaimed hit bio-pic made about them (with those same lyrics 'removed from history') if they had lyrics like that? I doubt it...
So, does that make me a racist? ::)
-
Techno -Rap -Jazz and German Schlager
-
I like lots of totally different stuff, I mean, there are even a few rap or techno songs out there that I do like. It certainly depends on my mood, too, I try to keep an open mind.
But, yeah, as has been mentioned...German Schlager and German Volksmusik...*brrrr* But then there a even couple of songs connected to those genres that at least bring back happy childhood memories, even though the songs themselves are dreadful. ;D
I do hate Marius Müller-Westernhagen, though....no exceptions, no happy memories, just loathe his music.
-
re-reading this thread and i'm somehow comforted by the posts from others who don't like jazz ............. :P

Anyone, mostly women who flippin warble.
I can't stand a warbler and that's all you get at the moment.
I think it was invented by Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey or even Celine Dion.
All the young girl singers do it, Adele and Pick and Mix are the ones that get on my tits the most.
Oh, and 90% of the girls on x factor/BGT/the voice.
