Title: OK, Let's Admit It, Most NMA Songs Are Too Long
Post by: Space on January 30, 2015, 09:39:53 PM
Watch the Super Bowl this Sunday. I hope Justin Sullivan will be because Katy Perry is the halftime show and Justin can learn from her how to become a better songwriter: keep songs short and to the point.

Let's be honest and admit that most NMA songs are waaaaaay too long. "Ballad"? That's about seventeen minutes of a guy playing an acoustic guitar and singing. "Someone Like Jesus"? I thought by the time the song was over Jesus himself would have returned for His second coming. "Qasr El Nil Bridge"? My God, both the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were shorter than that song.

In the past I have used my recording gear to improve some NMA songs by just cutting out a verse or fading the song out quicker. Why doesn't the band itself do that? They have some great songs that just go on and on and on... Many New Model Army songs feel like they clock in at twenty minutes. Sometimes I have to look at the album cover just to make sure I am not listening to a Rush album by mistake.

I am telling you, Katy Perry this Sunday will play five songs in her fifteen minute Super Bowl spot. New Model Army would be lucky to get one song done in fifteen minutes. (That's probably the reason why NMA have never been asked to play the Super Bowl.)

"Frightened"? Perfect song. Says it all it wants to say and gets it done in three and a half minutes.
"Lullaby"? I put that song on two days ago and it is still playing.
Every top musician knows the first rule of songwriting is KISS -- Keep It Short, Stupid! Katy Perry knows that, why doesn't New Model Army?

At least they're not as long as a game of American football. And unlike American football, people in more than one country actually care, they don't stop every few minutes for ad breaks, are enjoyable for a spectator when seen live, and you don't have to suffer several hours of hype and some **** throwing herself around on stage before anything actually happens.

How many times does it take to go this thru? Maybe you'll need some fresh air? I'm sorry but please check if the fridge is empty. Go out and listen to some people. Or something.

Let's call a spade a spade here. Quit being silly fanboys blindly stating that everything New Model Army does is the best thing on Earth.

Which artist - Justin Sullivan or Katy Perry - over the past five years has created the better song? Answer Katy Perry.

Sullivan's best work over the past five years is "Summer Moors." Nice song.
Katy Perry's best work over the past five years is "Teenage Dream." A stupendous marvel of popular songwriting crafstmanship.
Let's compare:

"Summer Moors":
- moody, but you can't dance to it
- nice lyrics, buy what exactly do they mean
- nobody even knows what a Moor is. A grassy hill? Othello?

"Teenage Dream":
- has a great guitar lick
- has a brilliant throwback lyric that harkens back to classic 50s/60s rock and roll teenage drama angst epitomized in songs like "Teenager In Love" and "Leader of the Pack."
- has one of the greatest, catchiest choruses ever created

Plus I saw Katy Perry sing "Teenage Dream" on "Saturday Night Live" wearing a short cheerleader outfit. I saw Justin Sullivan sing "Summer Moors" on youtube and believe me, Katy's performance was far more entertaining.

I am not kidding around. Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" is better than "Summer Moors" and better than any song that Justin Sullivcan has come up with over these past five years. Be honest for once. You won't be a heretic for saying Perry has come up with the better song in recent years. You'd simply be correct.

Every top musician knows the first rule of songwriting is KISS -- Keep It Short, Stupid! Katy Perry knows that, why doesn't New Model Army?

Yeah...

Hey Jude

Bohemian Rhapsody

Like A Rolling Stone

...if only Katy Perry had been around a few decades earlier then she could've taught the writers of those songs a thing or two...they might've ended up with a hit song on their hands if she had...

Based on the fact that the more short a song is, the better, I submit this as the greatest song EVA.

Yes, entertaining to sex driven males in a misogynistic culture. Honestly if you don't like deep, thoughtful and meaningful music Katy Perry is a win for you. But if it's emotional depth and passion that you want out of music. Sullivan wins hand's down.

It's all about what you want out of your music.

But... but... Katy Perry has a short skirt!  And breasts!  And did a video where she was scantily-clad and leered at by a smirking misogynist rapper!  That's gotta be better than, I dunno, clutching at straws for a minute here and scratching my head, Green And Grey, One Of The Chosen, Purity, Ballad, Today Is A Good Day, Fireworks Night, Modern Times, White Light, Family Life, The Hunt, Get Me Out, Dawn, High, Seven Times, Better Than Them, I Love The World, here Comes The War, Bad Old World, Prayer Flags, Smalltown England, Fate, Whirlwind, Before I Get Old, Knife, Frightened, Knieval, Autumn, Ghost Of Your Father, No Rest, Lights Go Out, March In September, etc etc etc....

Yes.  I currently have my sarcastic face on.  Amanda, so should you.  ;)

Just a side note:

Can somebody please tranquilize me while my country screams at their televisions while watching the horrific superbowl?

My restaurant/work is celebrating that crap and i will have to cook for a bunch of people shouting at a screen. I do not get it. I do not even own a t.v.  ;)

It's not hippy enough.
