Title: Nights Of A 1000 Voices
Post by: Viv Savage on December 28, 2017, 03:44:45 PM
I thought I'd start a new thread for the announcement rather than use the old one - so here is the announcement:

Nights of A Thousand Voices
13th and 14th April 2018 at Round Chapel, Hackney, London

You know those moments when the band plays quietly and the whole audience sings the words? Sometimes, these are the most emotional experiences - because singing together is the oldest and most basic form of human art, something primal and truly shared. So we are planning two nights of just this, which, to the best of our knowledge, has never been attempted by any band ever.

We have chosen the Round Chapel in Hackney both for its amazing open acoustics and for the circular layout of the room, which we believe will be perfect for the spirit of the event.

These are not concerts as such; this is a community singing event for all those people who love our songs, who love singing and love the feeling of singing together with others. The venue will be fully seated around a small stage constructed in the centre of the room; the whole band will be playing but the arrangements will be deliberately stripped down and very quiet - there will be no big PA system. The nights will be all about the participation and voices of everyone who comes.

While we are open to suggestions, ultimately we will choose the songs that lend themselves best to the idea – strong melodies and slower, easy vocal rhythms will suit best and we will vary these over the two nights. We will issue song-books (included in the price of the ticket) as we understand that people often know particular lines and choruses but usually not all the lyrics; and, of course, we plan to record and film both nights.

Tickets will be £27.50 or £50 for both nights and will be available exclusively from our Shop. Details will follow next week.

If you love singing and love New Model Army songs and love the sense of community that we have created over the years, we hope you’ll join with us from all different corners of the World for these special nights.

The potential dynamics are interesting. Does the mosh pit become a no no? Because its a wholly different thing all together. I think its going to be a very special couple of nights.

This seems like an attempt to bottle the lightning that happens a few times in an NMA show when the crowd drown out the band.  Specifically in 51st State where they have changed the arrangement to the point where they drop out altogether. We ALL know ALL the words to it. My personal favourite bit “ Here in the land of opportunity – HA!”
Some of us may have sung in choirs as kids, or gone to midnight mass or a football match or and NMA gig or whatever , if you have you will understand the power of that feeling. It’s a primal thing that’s why the God Squad do it, they understand the power.
One of my favourite examples is the Icelandic football chant at the last world cup. (Not technically singing but you get my drift) They blew away all the other fans to the point that supporters of other teams stole the idea. I often wish the family would take it up to bring the band back on instead of that awful version that happens.
My point is the band obviously love it too or they wouldn’t be encouraging it like this. After all the good shows they’ve done for us we should put on a good show for them  and if I can get my ticket I’ll be there belting it out though I may need to refer to the hymn book.

Reminds me of "1.000 Drummers" - an event more than 10 years ago with the drummer of Golden Earring - Netherlands or Belgium, only
found some minutes of this on YT later and missed the tv- version of that gig
I can´t sing, but I wish to be there :(
And a dvd of this would be perfect on the ones of us missing that kind of special family meeting ;)

I'm blown away by the idea, the project, and i will try to make the journey.

This is more than just a good idea, there are so many aspects to this.
The band is sharing something with the fans, they are giving up control, they want to empower us, to connect more than you can at a "normal" concert.

Singing is a very, very healthy thing! It truely is in a medicinic way. Its about breathing and expressing.
Most of us feel not very comfortable to sing. we hear our own, strange voice in our ears, we become aware about how others could perceive us, hear us, but that's all kind of platons allegory of the cave.

you have to overcome your fears, you have to feel free to sing and you have to dare to show emotions. singing is very personal, singing is the oldest art of mankind, singing is truth. and singing with many others connects the spirits, dissolves your ego.

this is going to be magical, fantastic, wonderful and i want to be part of it. and i'm not a good singer, but i'm passionate;-)

so, now it's about to get some days free from the moneybound-slavery, to check the travel options and most important, the hotel options.

any information, whre you can stay cheaply in that area?

I'm pretty sure I can't make these dates :'(  but have been looking into hotels in the area, nothing is coming up too cheap, but bear in mind London transport links are fairly inexpensive so if you can find a place a couple of miles away then go for it!  As long as you've got somewhere to rest your head, who cares if it takes you half an hour to get there!

On reflection of my original post, maybe I'd had a wee too much festive drink that day.
I hope both nights are recorded so I can hear your terrible singing  :D
However in response to a post asking what I wanted or expected, here is what I thought.
1. Band announcing final album and tour. Glad it wasn't this.
2. Streamed gig from their studio with fan Q&A
3. Two nights where fans chose all songs played. Suppose this has been done to a degree
4. A 2 day festival similar to Beautiful Days festival with NMA headlining both nights

Anyway I apologise if I upset anyone. I hope it's an amazing night. Enjoy xx

@Crowman - no need fella. They've added an extra date on the Sunday afternoon if you're quick it looks like there's about 500 tickets left for that at the moment. Good luck.

I can't believe i was too late..again. I only got a ticket to friday night, it was a way too fast sell out. But i'm seeing it as: I'VE GOT A TICKET!! Yeah!!
So flight an hotel is booked and i'm so looking forward to this event.

I thought about it a little and had some ideas.
It came to my mind, that singing while seated is not that easy. I would prefer to stand while singing. And i can't imaging staying on a seat while the energy of some songs gets you on the feet. That's another point. A little space where you can move and kinda dance while singing would be nice? A least to have room to shake your upper body to the tunes. Like at a normal concert.
It would be interesting to try out some things, experiment with all the voices. To divide the room into different sections with different singing parts, like a choir. Or to have some group just humming. Then we could do Horseman or like the "uhu hu hu" in march in september.

Another idea for the filmcrew. They could have a little booth and in there everybody can sing the same song into the camera and then you can cut evrybody with just one word after another to have the full song sung by hundred people...
I know, too much thoughts, just playing with ideas  8)

BTW, do they allow to drink a beer in a church? Or is this kind of a just spiritual, sober event...what do you think?
Would be terrible if some people would be drunk and destroy atmosphere with shouting or just loud talking while calm parts.

Was occupying my brain at work thinking about the "mechanics" of this the other day and I was wondering about the sitting down bit too: nobody sings sitting down at the footie, church or AmDram do they? I'd imagine the moving thing would happen quite naturally if we're stood up no?

That filming idea sounds a good giggle  :)

I think in the facebook interview thing there was an answer regarding a bar being brought into the venue - certainly a while back at the Hebden Bridge church event there was indeed a bar  :)

Post by: Raven on February 04, 2018, 07:59:02 AM
I agree that sitting down is not a natural way to sing. I don't think it will be the case. We are not there to see the band per se but to gather to sing together. The band are effectively there to enable, encourage and guide. We may not even hear them at times. We are the main event and there to entertain ourselves and the band.

I believe the rehearsals in Bradford with the volunteers was due to go ahead yesterday. Wonder how that went.
