Title: Anyone going to The Levellers / NMA in Manchester, Jul 1st?
Post by: Master Ray on April 04, 2018, 07:12:32 PM

Just found out The Wildhearts are playing as well!  If it wasn't a 'must' before', it certainly is now!

Three fine bands on the same bill.  I know Bunny's up for it, anyone else?  Could be an excuse for a good pre-gig meet to tide us over until the inevitable and eagerly awaited NMA Christmas tour...   ???

MR have you clocked their will also be a reggae band on, Zion Train? Bit of a strange mix this one. So with liquid sunshine, theres likely to be a bit of funk in the air!!

I know nothing about Zion Train... but I do remember seeing The Stone Roses at Heaton Park a few years ago and The Wailers (without Bob, obviously) doing an hour long reggae set.. fook me, that was dreary, I've seen some terrible support acts before but this was a whole new level of bad.   ::)

Nearer the time I'll investigate what times the bands are on, seeing as open-air gigs are so expensive when it comes to drinks, we might 'pre-load' before getting into the venue... or figure out how to smuggle some drinks in there!   ;)

Great, quite fancy seeing that exhibition myself.  Be sure to look for mentions of pre-gig meets on the Sunday, the more the merrier!

Or, alternatively, find a pub nearby where the drinks are cheaper and avoid them entirely!

Yeah. I think thats an option. Depends on timings I guess. Only ever done one festival before and left that with a blinding headache. Missed G'n'R in their prime as a result....bit of a theme developing on that score with me and gigs  ;)

Don't think you'll be able to smuggle drinks, the security was very tight last year(especially just after the Arena bomb),it also took a while to get in,so bear that in mind. There is a bar inside, and it wasn't too drastic.

Looks like The Membranes have been added to the bill as well. Deffo seen them as a support band before, would that have been with NMA or The Levellers?  Or possibly both?  I seem to remember they were rather excellent...

I've deffo seen one of John Robb's other bands, Goldblade (also rather excellent) supporting NMA... or have I, my memory isn't what it used to be...  :-\

Aw heck... I might not be able to make this one after all.  Long story short, a bunch of financial problems have descended on my head all at once.  It's not a lost cause yet (chasing a tax rebate that I think I'm owed!) and I can cancel my hotel right up until the day in question, so I'll keep it open.  Still, if I can't make it, hope you have a fun time...

Right. Me babbies have just gone off. Walked into the amphitheatre just as they came on. Brilliant show. Levs next, but I think NMA has a large following here. Loads of summer dresses, summer shorts , girls with flowers in their hair and an unusual varied crowd. Saw a young child of about 8 on someones shoulders, smiling her head off. And thats what music should be about. My first festival and well worth it.....and the impending car repair, after the £1200 I just paid for other repairs  :-\. Gotta get home yet. On the plus drove through Cheshire, MR's turf. How the other half live  ;D

C'mon, sir, you can't leave it there! But WHAT?

Oh, and 'how the other half live?'  You obviously never passed through MY part of Cheshire... not for nothing was my town recently used as a filming location for an action TV show set in a dystopian future...   ;)

Well. I only saw the nice bit. I followed the RAC man through the lanes, and there were girls throwing rose petals before my car :).
I dunno. They played some of the songs I really, really love...Men an Tol being one. Their support is really really big and as a band they can play together. But it did nothing to me. Maybe Im ten years to old. There's a reason I switched off from their songs in the 90's.. I wouldnt pay to watch them alone. Interestingly, I spoke to a few of their fans, who hadnt listened to NMA for a while. They'd all moved on to the Levs but were really impressed. Ying and yang.

Just got back home from an excellent day in Manchester. As Bunny says, excellent venue.Lager was £5 a pint.Had a few in town earlier.Membranes were on first(with a choir)Great sounds coming from John Robbs heavy bass.Zion Train not my cup of tea but they weren't bad.The Wildhearts set was pretty short and sweet and Loud ;D.I beleive they are flying out to Japan today.Hats off to Bassist Danny McCormack(sitting on a stool after recently having his leg amputated)
NMA really rocked. Not seen them in an open air gig since Chepstow Castle last year and they IMHO were muchbetter. Was right down the front and it was bouncing behind me.They opened with Stormclouds. Can't remember exactly what they played but definately Angry Planet,Born Feral,Summer Moors,Winter,Devils Bargain and Poison Street.and possibly(My memory ain't what it used to be and I'd had a few pints)Purity,Vagabonds,March in September and Light go Out. :-[
Watched the Levs from a distance and the crowd was well up for it.Remember One Way and Beautiful Day.The crowd seemed to enjoy their set but after NMA, IMHO they were an anti climax

Was pleasantly surprised to bump into Ian(ninja12r)who has been AWOL for a while.I seem to remember a while back on here someone asking if anyone had heard from him.He is alive and kicking and a proud new dad.
Overall an excellent day out.Best in a while except for a shorter set which is to be expected when there are a few bands on.

Nice to hear these gig reports.  Glad to hear everyone had a nice time (not that I'm seething with jealousy or anything...)

I was interested in what people thought of the Levs.  Personally, I really like them, although they're deffo trading on past glories these days... but, hey, ageing musicians got to eat, right?  Your opinions were much like I thought they would be... a tight and professional band who know their audience and have some fine tunes, but never really diversified into anything more interesting... a fair summary?   ???

Dilla put in one word what I was trying to say. Anti climax. Albeit very good musically.
