translation taken from facebook by Michael Sanderson:
Next year, the punk rock pop folk legend New Model Army celebrates its 40th anniversary. Before the festivities begin, they throw the new album "From Here" on the market - including a tour and Vienna gig in October.
Founding member Justin Sullivan, who is also responsible for the guitar as well as the vocals, does not mind the analysis of the band's history, because that's enough in 2020 in the anniversary year. Nevertheless, he was barely able to stop at the! Ticket-talk.
As the lead single for the new album you chose the untypically short title "End of Days". In addition, the band does not appear in the video. Why the unconventional approach?
There are much more personal songs on the album. The title should just give you a rough idea of what it's about. And "End of Days" is short. The other tracks are long. When a record company tries to market an album, they need a short song first and foremost. There is no title with 13 minutes. "End of Days" is certainly not the best song on the record, but it represents the whole album in terms of sound. It's a simple, little song. For "Never Arriving" we shot a video. That was before we decided on "End of Days" as the lead single and for a text video. There is also the wonderful artwork. By the way, I'm reluctant to explain my lyrics, but I want every listener to take what they want out of it. It does not just have to give an opinion to everything.
In End of Days, you talk about something that would never have been invented. What could humanity never have invented?
(laughs) Where should I start? Maybe the book of the books of religions? They are a cultural problem. Judaism, Islam and Christianity are actually the same damn religion. They all have a longing to separate people from nature. They distinguish between men and women. Divide religions. Many problems have their origins there. This reminds me of the line: "The trouble starts with the meaning of things."
Does the end of days break over us?
Every generation has its own doomsday scenario. Especially the next generation will experience a terrible cataclysm. The most horrible statistic I've ever seen is that within my lifetime, 40 percent of all species on Earth will have disappeared. This is extremely worrying. But there are no concrete examples on the album. I wanted to take a step back from this world where we only shout at each other. I wanted to see the bigger picture.
Why did you choose a studio on a small Norwegian island?
We have now recorded a couple of albums with Lee Smith and Jamie Lockhart, they also coproduced Winter. Our relationship is really great and they have this little studio that I really like. But it's a punk rock studio. It is very small and crammed with equipment and a bit claustrophobic. We wanted to work together again, but elsewhere. "Winter" has this claustrophobic sound of her studio, everything sounds very crowded. This time we wanted an album that sounds great. So we needed a large room with adjoining rooms. Lee and Jamie arrived with this Norwegian studio, which is currently popular with many artists. It is located on the coast of this small island, surrounded by the sea, mountains, rocks and snow. When we were there, there was still snow on the beach which slowly melted away. Whenever you pick up things, you are surrounded by that vastness, a hard, beautiful, melancholy landscape. The studio has built a musician who knew what he is doing. He also has a lot of coal. There are wonderful old tools: tape machines, great microphones - and a brand new mixer. Everything is perfect. The living rooms are on the first floor. They are pretty simply equipped. If you spend three months there, you could easily go crazy. But the studio is so booked up that we only had nine days to record the album. Living rooms did not matter to us, we worked all the time anyway. And every time you look, there is this vastness and the weather. Other musicians like to go to New York, to L.A., in the middle of the hustle and bustle. Or in the Caribbean. When you ask all five New Model Army band members about our favorite scenery: cold, desolate, big, open, rough. Snow, rock, water. A landscape where you can see for miles.
In "Conversation" it goes u.a. for talks with seagulls. What did you discuss with them?
(laughs) The text line comes from the Icelandic movie "The Deep". It's about an amazing story that happened in the eighties: A fishing boat capsized in the ice-cold sea. All of the crew were killed except one sailor. He's always kept swimming. Later, it was found that this was due to a genetic abnormality in his adipose tissue that he was able to survive in cold water. The hardest thing for him was loneliness. And so he talked to a couple of seagulls, who kept circling over his head and accompanying him. For me, this is an incredibly strong story and there are impressive pictures in the film. It shows how we function as living beings. We are social creatures, we need society.
Passing Through is about loss. Do you still have something to lose?
Not really, no. Well, we all lose. As you get older, you lose people. They die. You lose things that you love. The world is changing. But that is an unalterable part of life. You swim with the stream. One day you go too. And it does not matter. The last line of the album is: "Look in the mirror and laugh." People overestimate themselves today completely, they have lost all modesty. Especially when it comes to nature and the whole planet. We think we are so important. One should accept that one is nothing. I am nothing. Maybe these are the things that are going on in the world right now, which is why I wanted to take a step back. Away from the petty quarrels, to a certain modesty. We are all just passing people. One day you are dead. Gone.
Getting older is not a great thing?
Yes absolutely.
To the song "Never Arriving": Is there no arrival, nowhere?
That is a legitimate question that leads to the philosophical. But you are probably right, there is no arrival. Maybe dying is the arrival. In my life and in my lyrics, I never liked the idea that I should ever arrive somewhere. Or knows where I'm going. That would be the end of the journey. I do not like to finish something. When I make an album and it comes to completion, I hate to let go. Then comes the day it's done and I lose all interest in it. It's gone. Finished. The journey is the interesting part for me. The safest place for me is between A and B. A might cause problems, B the same. In between, you are sure. This is the place for cowards. For cowards like me. But that's the way I am.
Next year is the 40th anniversary of the band, "From Here" is the 15th studio album. What are you thinking about these numbers?
Nothing. No thoughts in that direction! We think about that in the coming year. At the end of last year we thought about recording a new album. As a band, things went smoothly and we had tons of ideas. We wanted to take advantage of that. We knew it would have to be released this year, because then everybody wants to talk about our damn past and the forty years. That was one of the reasons why we recorded and released "From Here" so quickly. I think it was an advantage that we had to work so fast. Even though we had imposed the pressure on ourselves, it really did us good.
"Setting Sun" starts with folk and develops into a driving rock banger. Was this a planned journey between styles?
We do not think about that, everyone in the band has a different musical taste. We do not listen to the same music next to New Model Army. I always liked folk melodies. But at the end of the day, I'm a soul guy. My first love was Tamla Motown, most do not check that out because they do not listen. If you listen to all the records of New Model Army, then drums and bass are the main draws. I am a songwriter. I can not play drums. But I've always understood that each volume is all about the rhythm section. At the end of "Setting Sun" there is this great guitar part, but it is highlighted by drums and bass. The New Model Army has always had great drummers and bass players.
In October there will be a concert in Vienna. What will the set list look like?
There will be much of the new album. What's more, we have not decided yet. The special thing about this record is that we use as few keyboards on it as never before. It's a guitar album. Dean is finally getting away from the keyboards that he hates anyway, and can play the guitar.
Mick Hucknall explained that Simply Red is actually his project and not a band. You are the last original member of New Model Army. Would an NMA be conceivable without Justin Sullivan?
I never think about that and would never say New Model Army is my project. We are a band. We fight like a band. But we also get on well together, like a band. No one has a huge ego, everyone is open to all ideas. To be honest, I'm terrible when I'm on my own. I always need at least one partner.

Thanks for posting!
Some interesting thoughts and information. Kind of strange to hear: "End of days is certainly not the best song on the record" being said about the single release from a new album by the artist. And the, if this is true..;-)
-
Oh man, how big this album gonna be. Already "Watch and learn" ist a straight forward rock song. And i'm very curious and excited to hear this mentioned song lasting 13 minutes. I expect a huge guitar based riff'n'jam sound session. :D
The band in this actual formation has the potential to do so. Just listen to outros like "Beginning" from the winter album. Sometimes i wish the guitar based outro would last at least 30 minutes. How this song gets bigger and bigger in the end.

And one more interview - Flux FM, Berlin. Enjoy!

LP and CD...but both according to this site will be shipped in late August. ;)

Wow! I could imagine a clever student worker in the pressing facility thought no one will notice one missing, while packing thousands of those items into boxes. 8)

I just hope they are RIGHT!!!:
“An impassioned, impressive collection ... their style remains a gritty variation on ‘Big Music’ [with] the pounding title track fueled by righteous fury and mockery of those drunk on power. We’d all do well to listen.” - Classic Pop 4/5
“…has the feel of arguably the band’s finest album …a treasure trove of songs.”

It seems that Vive le Rock! is a big supporter of NMA, if i remember well 3/4 years ago they released a special magazine about the band..

FIRST REVIEW! In German so please, translation...:
http://rockmagazine.net/new-model-army-from-here-album-review-empfehlung-der-redaktion/
-
The german text:
Ganz Oben. Ganz großes Kino. 10 / 10 Bängs. Mit Stern. EMPFEHLUNG DER REDAKTION!
My translation:
The music of the NMA follows me since the days of my youth. Is it the protest, which shines constantly through, the subtle criticism of the system, or is it the charismatic justin sullivan, who with his voice since almost 40 years has become indispensable for this band?
Justin told me once, that he would like to leave the world on stage. Though he isn't a "rampensau" (someone who wants to be in front of the stage and is acting for show and endorsement. rampensau is a negative expression for someone who wants and needs to be in the spotlight) to whom this would fit. Justin is a very blessed story-teller, a perfectionist and a visionary.
And exactly with those elements he plays on "from here". And maybe that's why it's me, who may say some words about the record. As a lighting engineer you always have to try to visualise music, in colours, patterns and atmosphere and bring moods to the stage.
But beforehand i must say. I cannot review this album, by dividing it into pieces or titles. This is just one big "Gesamtkunstwerk" complete artwork.
From the desperation in the opener "passing through" to the reflectiveness in "from here", the title song and also last track on the album...Here one track leads to another, fits together, one song a theme on its own, but in the whole become complete.
"From here" is a milestone for me. Not only in the long history of the band, but in the history of modern musik. With this album the NMA arrived after a long journey there, where they always have belonged.
An album full of colurs, full of gray shades and images in the mind, which you will not easy forget. And it is just unparalleled. I tried it with Pink Floyd and Lou Reed...it didn't work. It is different.
It is an album of a band, who went to a studio on a little norwegan island voluntarily into isolation, it is an album by a great collection of musicians and it is...a masterpiece.
To me the NMA is with From Here there, where their place has always been. At the zemith. At the very top. "Ganz großes Kino" (like fkn brilliant but with more honour;-) in germany we say: ganz großes kino, to express craftmanship, a very good production, when you savor everything well done)
10/10 Bängs. With a star. Recommendation by the editors.

Long journey .... I can't wait, especially if the long journey means that "From here" follows completly different path than "Winter" and "Between Dog And Wolf". Remember the first impressions after Camden's version of "Watch & Learn". That was something like initial spirit came back.

Here's another review in english:
https://soundblab.com/reviews/albums/22224-new-model-army-from-here
Upon first listen, I would’ve given this album a 6/10. Solid effort, but a bit samey. But it’s so multi-layered, so impressively complex that it’s not something you can listen to once or twice, and then give your verdict. It’s an important album for our time, so go and give it a few listens.
-
This one is bit contrary, isn't it? I liked how he described the complexity and that you cannot give a verdict after one listen, but "a bit samey' and only 6 out of ten? He should have waited and follow his own advise and listen to it one more time for the 10 of 10! ;)

He gave it 9.
However that review sums up all reviews, a moment in time of one persons opinion. And I suspect many reviewers listen to a new record once and once only.
Anyone that knows NMA is well aware the more you listen the more you hear.
A depth to music and lyrics that very few bands can ever hope to attain.
Reviews in my humble opinion are pointless just an excuse for some fancy waffle with words which I need a thesauraus to understand.
Anyway enough back to my Red wine and the excitement of knowing there is 1 week to go till the best NMA album since the last one.(https://i.imgur.com/sVpMz34.gif)

You're right MARKXE, thanks for pointing that out. I only read the article and didn't see the real rating on top of it. And yes, reviews are kind of a love/hate thing for me. I must admit that i like talking about those things, opinions, taste und geschmäcker;-) but it is mostly like you said "some fancy waffle with words". So i am a walking paradox 8)

I think that writing good reviews is a rare skill. Far too many are just annoying because of their obvious preconceived ideas (both good and bad) or pointless waffle as MARKXE said. Interviews are much the same in my opinion. A good interview is a pleasure to listen to.

Many german and british reviews but not a single one, at least for the moment, from french sites or magazines! :(

Do you remember if this was different with the older releases? I don't know how this works, if the press releases are sent out or the jpurnalist have to ask for them. Maybe only after the release a review will come in french?

maybe i'm wrong, but i remember reading a few french reviews on the net a few days/weeks before the releases of NMA's last albums...i guess "From here" will be reviewed in the french music magazines and sites in September or October. I guess it's also logical to read early reviews from Germany and UK first, because it's where the band is mostly known. In France NMA is playing in small venues.

Seems to have enjoyed it more than just « some good tracks », he said there was moments of grace, and gave it 4/5 :)
-
Seems to have enjoyed it more than just « some good tracks », he said there was moments of grace, and gave it 4/5 :)
Where do you see the 4/5 rating?
The end of the review is a bit weird/ambiguous, he writes that the album is a good rock exercise, and it's pretty good for a band like NMA because he no longer had expectations from the band!
-
Yes, he said it was a pleasant surprise because he had no expectations. The 4/5 is not written as if, look at the scale he do before the review, there’s stuff ranging from « not to play with people around » to « toddler friendly », the last item is a conclusion scale going :
- I’ve listened once but that was one too many
- after a few listening I still have trouble appreciate it
- I listen to it easily but with no emotions
- I really enjoy listening to it
- I listen only to this record since Weeks
So it appears to me as a scale from 1 to 5, and NMA was on the 4th, « I really enjoy listening to it » :)
I agree with you, it’s not a conventional review, but the overall is really positive, look at the comments in red before the review they are all great !
-
Yes, he said it was a pleasant surprise because he had no expectations.
I asked him in the comments and he answered to me that he had no expectations because he thinks , even if the last albums are rather good, that he loved the style of the band in the 80's but that this style has little evolved/changed through the years , a bit samey in the 90's and 2000's, except maybe he seems to suggest, when they made "Between dog and wolf" in 2013 ;)
-
Thinking Thunder (really folk) and LoHC (pop) are the same seems difficult to me, but after all I think all black metal releases sound the same when other people hear a world of differences between 2 BM bands :)
I saw your comments there, made one too but it was never published ...

NMA keeps plugging along, slowly growing and morphing and remaining prolific. From Here continues the crusty tribal phase they began with the release of Between Dog and Wolf, and it has all the good and the less-good in common with most of their output this past decade. The songwriting and consistency on this record seems to be a step-up from Winter, which at times just meandered a bit for me. Unfortunately - like all NMA records from this century they just need an editor. These albums are all just 3 or 4 songs too dang long, and there's a whole lot of band-in-a-basement songwriting. A lot of songs just seem to plod along. I know these guys are getting up there in age, but gimme something punchy. Get in and get out. Also - the mix/master is just hot as can be. Peaking and distorted. It's a bit rough on the ears. Justin is on record as saying the master tapes of the earlier records sound so much better than recent digital records. If that's the case, I wish they could work up the budget to record on tape again, as this overall sounds pretty dreadful.
This review sounds negative.
It's not. Great band, good songs, overlong, sloppy production. may they live forever.

What do you think about this statement from the amazon review Guillaume quoted:

Since i'm listening to the album with my stereo in a new living room, the sound seems to be a bit peaky and distorted, like there's an acoustic noise on it. Over the headphones it was way better.

I love the fact that this guy starts to wonder how didn’t discovered NMA before, and that this review is fresh without the back catalog to compare too

There’s always been a degree of snobbery directed towards Bradford’s New Model Army, who seemed to spend the late 80s and early 90s performing mid-afternoon slots at Reading Festival to audiences of dreadlocked vegetarians.
But no amount of dog-on-string jokes has ever held them back. From Here, their 15th album, is an impassioned, impressive collection that refutes every inherited prejudice detractors might offer, and also explains why 2016’s Winter was their highest charting album in over two decades.
Their style, of course, remains a gritty variation on ‘Big Music’, with The Weather recalling Thin Lizzy as much as overlooked early 90s U2 wannabes This Picture, while Setting Sun suggests none other than Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds were they to try their hand at folk. Opener Passing Through is particularly intense, its guitars growling slowly towards a stormy climax, while End Of Days is suitably apocalyptic and Watch And Learn full of menace as noisy as The God Machine’s, though they’re having so much fun it ends with hearty laughter. The pounding title track closer, however, is instead fuelled by righteous fury and mockery of those drunk on power. We’d all do well to listen.
