NMA keeps plugging along, slowly growing and morphing and remaining prolific. From Here continues the crusty tribal phase they began with the release of Between Dog and Wolf, and it has all the good and the less-good in common with most of their output this past decade. The songwriting and consistency on this record seems to be a step-up from Winter, which at times just meandered a bit for me. Unfortunately - like all NMA records from this century they just need an editor. These albums are all just 3 or 4 songs too dang long, and there's a whole lot of band-in-a-basement songwriting. A lot of songs just seem to plod along. I know these guys are getting up there in age, but gimme something punchy. Get in and get out. Also - the mix/master is just hot as can be. Peaking and distorted. It's a bit rough on the ears. Justin is on record as saying the master tapes of the earlier records sound so much better than recent digital records. If that's the case, I wish they could work up the budget to record on tape again, as this overall sounds pretty dreadful.
This review sounds negative.
It's not. Great band, good songs, overlong, sloppy production. may they live forever.
