With the release of "From Here" I read various numbers: "this is the band's thirteenth album," "this is the band's 15th album".... Well, what do you think it is?
The problem with the proper count lies with:
- the live releases ("Raw Melody Men," "...and Nobody Else But Space," "**** Texas, Sing For Us"...)
- the various compilations (BBC sessions, "Lost Songs"...)
- the "Between Blood And Wine" disc.
OK, but the album "Eight" can help us out here. If the band themselves consider it their eighth album, then live albums do not count. We can also rule out compilations albums -- not new material.
But what about "Between Blood And Wine"? Do you consider that an album?
By the way, to discount live albums as the band did, is absurd. You really think anybody feels "Frampton Comes Alive" is not a Peter Frampton album? I do feel NMA list of albums should include the live ones.
So here's the list of studio albums: "From Here" sets in at 14:
Vengeance (1984)
No Rest for the Wicked (1985)
The Ghost of Cain (1986)
Thunder and Consolation (1989)
Impurity (1990)
The Love of Hopeless Causes (1993)
Strange Brotherhood (1998)
Eight (2000)
Carnival (2005)
High (2007)
Today Is a Good Day (2009)
Between Dog and Wolf (2013)
Winter (2016)
From Here (2019)
Do you feel "From Here" is the band's 14th album?
Would you count "Wine/Blood" as a proper album? (I don't.)
Do you count the live albums as album releases to be counted? (I do, the band doesn't.)
-
BWAB has just over 30 minutes of new material on it.
Bob Dylan, The Byrds, Slayer, The Ramones, Minutemen, Aretha Franklin, Prince, Weezer, Sleater-Kinney, Billy Bragg and, yes, THE BEATLES all put out 30 minute albums (or less) that are generally regarded as proper ALBUMS.
So, yes, I would regard 'Between Wine And Blood' as a proper NMA album, the live disc was a lovely bonus.
;)

Well, if we are going to use new songs and time as the criteria then "Lost Songs" and "B Sides And Abandoned Tracks" would rate as albums.
I don't count them as I see they are compilations. The band didn't set out to a studio and record those two collections as released.
However, I'll go with "Wine And Blood" as an album - but six songs? I am a fan of "Sandinista" -- THIRTY-six songs! Now, that's an album.

The number of tracks is irellevant
Led Zepellin: The Song Remains The same only has 5 tracks on a double album
Side 1
Rock n Roll
Celebration Day
The Song Remains The Same
Rain Song
Side 2
Dazed And Confused
Side 3
No Quarter
Stairway To Heaven
Side 4
Moby Dick
Whole Lotta Love
If it isnt classed as an album then all these are incorrect
Canadian RPM Top 100 Albums Chart Highest Position 8
Italian Albums Chart Highest Position 13
Japanese Albums Chart Highest Position 6
New Zealand Top 50 Albums Chart Highest Position 6
Norwegian Albums Chart Highest Position 21
Spanish Albums Chart Highest Position 23
Swedish Albums Chart Highest Position 29
UK Albums Chart Highest Position 1
US Billboard 200 Albums Chart Highest Position 2
West German Albums Chart Highest Position 20
Would you not class that as an album?
If not you need ya head looking at ;) ;)

Uhh, are you going to say that New Model Army need their heads looked at? After all, they are the ones who don't count live albums as albums. In other words they don't count one of the world's biggest selling albums - "Frampton Comes Alive" as an album!
And to be honest, six songs is hard to swallow as an album. An album by definition is a collection. An album of photographs would be more than six pictures, no? I think the boys in New Model Army agree with me and that's why "Blood And Wine" was sold with the live set. They knew six tracks wasn't enough for a proper album.
(And exactly what do you mean Led Zep's "The Song remains The Same" has only five tracks? I count 9 in your post.)

I doubt they even know who you are ;)

Most albums pre CD days on vinyl came in at around 30 mins....
-
How many songs were in the original Vengeance release, 8? I bet by playing time it was pretty close to Between Wine and Blood studio tracks. Still, BWAB is just in the edge. I thought I heard it called a mini album. Certainly more than an ep, which I would expect to have 3 or 4 songs. For me, putting together the music from BDAW onward yields enough music for 4 full albums, so that’s how I think of it.

Uhh, I added guitar to "Inheritance." I wrote lyrics to the instrumental "Caslen." I collaborate with them for live shows. I created their best album cover.
They know who I am.

Still Trolling I see, lol, best album cover, that made my day, don’t need any more laugh, was looking to watch an old Monthy Pythons but now will go full Ken Loach instead
No live for me (you have the same songs as albums) but definitely wine & Blood is an album (I like it even more than Dogs & Wolf), and the 2 b-sides and abandoned tracks are albums because there’s studio material that you don’t find on albums. So, and nobody cares about my opinion, the band less than anyone *cough*, for me, myself and I, From Here is the 15th proper studio album and 17th taking the b-sides into account (lots of b-sides and abandoned tracks where played live the past years BTW).
Ho, and I really don’t give a *whatever curse word you want* about Frampton !
-
No live for me (you have the same songs as albums)

Oh, come on, man. This I find incredible. Live albums are not albums to be counted as albums???
Yes, we have the songs on studio albums, but are they the same? ",,,,And Nobody Else" has a complete acoustic set -- acoustic versions of album songs. Very different.
-
So the band’s own site shows 16 studio albums, including BWAB, Lost Songs, and B Sides and Abandoned Tracks. I’m sold.

And yeah, From Here makes 17. My bad

I say you count the live albums.
There's a funny story. Are you aware that Pearl Jam recorded and released on separate CDs all their live shows one tour? Well, a few months later the band then released a new studio album. A reviewer (I think it was in Rolling Stone) reviewed the album by stating "the new Pearl Jam album is out. It is their 74th." I laughed.

Vengeance was described as a mini-album on first release, as was the 1987 German/US mini-album titled New Model Army.
Do they count as albums? Do any of the anthologies or collections?
Does the Brazilian Adrenaline album count?
I don't count the ones described in record contracts as 'overcall' albums, because they're just releases of leftover material, live recordings and complications, put out by labels to fulfil contractual obligations after a band has left.
EMI released all sorts of material after the contract ended a little early, one studio album short of the five intended. The live album (was it Raw Melody Men?) was counted as a studio album by EMI to complete on the deal, but History, Lost Songs etc. were overcall.
I guess it depends on your terms of reference, be they creative, legal or otherwise.

I would say every recording from a studio, would be an album, even if sometimes it’s not that easy (all the first period added to vengeance later, the ep from 87 later added to T&C, BW&B but no best of), so :
Vengeance with all the independent recording makes one album
No rest
Ghost of Cain
Thunder (with the CD bonus tracks)
Impurity
Love of HC
B sides
Strange Brotherhood
Lost songs
Eight
Carnival
High
Today is a Good Day
Between dogs and wolf
Between wine and blood (even if I admit this one could be just an add-on to the previous one, a DLC you could say in today’s world ;))
Winter
From Here
This is my opinion and I agree with myself ! Mostly I don’t give a damn of what the topic author think of it :D (but I’m interested in others opinions ;))

It's not as straight-forward as it seems, really. To me, B-Sides and Abandoned Tracks and Lost Songs are compilations and not proper albums. I count Vengeance as an album but not the White Coats EP (alas I'd call that an EP). I don't really think of BWAB as an album either. It's more of an afterthought of BDAW but that is probably debatable.
