30th Anthology
« on: October 27, 2020, 11:39:19 AM »
Hi,

I'm relatively new here... so a short introduction: I've known and loved NMA since the early 90s. For some reason, though, I never really progressed beyond Impurity (with the exception of B-Sides and Abandoned Tracks). I've listend to Love of Hopeless Causes, but to a much lesser extent, and even though I got Strange Brotherhood in 1998 and went to the tour, I didn't really get to know it.

Well, my loss, definitely. My partner gave me the four most recent albums for my birthday this year and apparently I missed out on a lot of great music. So now I'm working my way slowly through the back catalogue. Slowly because I need time to really get to know an album and I kind of like the knowledge that there still is a lot to discover, so I don't rush things.

So, to get to the point: I'm just making an order from the shop and am wondering if I should include 30th Anthology (not the box set, sadly, the two-CD-set). I do have or will get most of the songs on their original release album, so basically it would be enough to just buy the downloads of the remixed tracks.

Except, of course, there is a great booklet. I would gladly go for the whole album then. The shop doesn't really elaborate here and I couldn't find much on the web. So is anybody here who owns the set and can tell me a bit about the booklet?

Thanks in advance

hi flodhaest,

the double cd should come with a great booklet:
"Uniquely the songs were chosen not by 'hit' status but by individual band members, past and present, as personal favourites complete with introductory notes."
I'm not at home right now to look it up, but from my memory the members all chose some tracks and explained why they chose it. I think somebody here can give you more details about it and i would post some pictures of the booklet tomorrow, if that would be any help.
ever tried. ever failed. no matter.
try again. fail again. fail better.

Hi,

I was in the same position some years ago.

I have all the studio albums, plus a few lives (def. recommend F... Texas, sing For Us). The only track on the "anthology" that I seem to be missing is "Marry the Sea", which should be on B Sides and Abandoned Tracks.

If you're not going for the DVD version, I would focus on getting the full list of albums.

One more thing might be worth mentioning, if you got the "Original Album Series" box set, Impurity is missing "Marrakesh", and Thunder and Consolation is missing  these:
125Mph
The Charge
Chinese Whispers
Nothing Touches
White Coats

Have fun.

thanks fiddlesticks and cthulhu!

"F*** Texas" is definitely on my order. Won't listen to it for a while, though, as there are songs on it that I don't know yet and I want to first get to know them in their album context. If that makes any sense...

There seem to be a few remixes on the anthology, somebody mentioned they much prefer the anthology-version of "flying through the smoke" to the album one. So I would probably get the remixes anyway and a nice booklet with background information would be worth the extra bucks to me.

pictures would be greatly appreciated, but don't put too mich effort in it., cthulhu.

Cheers

Nice one.  Your post prompted me to get hold of B Sides and Abandoned Tracks (Amazon download, not available in the NMA shop - probably an EMI thing). Let us know what you think of Anthology.

And if some you are missing something of the old things as areal cd/dvd with a booklet:
Justin Sullivan and Friends was out of stock for many years before it came back - the dvd  (with 19 + 7 extra tracks) is great! Last shop sale chance perhaps for many years again  ;)
And me, I`ve got a black place in my heart

I think you are going to be correct about the JS & Friends DVD, lotus.  :)

30th Anthology... anything NMA/JS/RSC is money well spent, in my opinion. :)

pictures would be greatly appreciated, but don't put too mich effort in it., cthulhu.

Cthulhu is one of the most thoughtful, kindest and generous NMA devotees here.  This place is full of good souls and beautiful hearts.  :)

When it comes to all types of NMA/JS/RSC recordings, if funds permit, I try to purchase everything I can, but bit by bit.  I dive in for all the recordings CDs/LPs and DVDs first, then I go for the shirts, and then, if I can afford it, the jewellery.  I would certainly go for collection of quality photographs or coffee-table type photo book, but sadly there are no such products available.  And I don't understand why, is paper as expensive as cotton?  :(  I highly doubt it, but I wouldn't know for certain.  Even a limited run would be sweet.  How about doing one just to gauge interest? :-\ If they sell, then keep producing.  Where's the obstacle?  It's just ink and paper.  Ok, don't go too cheap on the quality, but good enough or better.  Please?  :-[

I swear,  >:(  I could really slap the media jerks who made these guys think they're ugly, 'cause they fcukin' AREN'T UGLY!!  >:(  Grrr!!  They're the complete opposite in fact!!!  It's a hopeless cause because they themselves don't see it.  I've SO tried asking for group photo posters and press photo type products to be officially produced and sold via the NMA shop.  But in my 15-7=8 years of being here, they've just gotten as far as releasing a gorgeous book and magazine.  I'm sorry, but to me, it just sounds like easier money for the band to maybe focus a little more on the production of paper based NMA merch.  :-[

Ahhh, I'm not going to stop asking though!  I'm going to become a royal pain in the ass, ;) 'til I can finally purchase a grand and beautiful NMA photo collection of 5"x7"s, 8"x10"s, posters and a strictly photo coffee-table type book, like what they ran during the gig break of the 40th Anniversary Global Gathering stream.  Wouldn't an album similiar to that collection be an amazing piece to own?  Doesn't anyone else think so, too?  :-[

Here the pictures of the booklet. It has 4 double sides

and yep, that's the wrong cd package in the picture, noticed it when it was done..;-) it's from the dvd package.

and here a little glimpse of how the pages look:

I made it extra bad and unsharp, so there are not too many spoilers in the picture ;-))

I think it's more than just a collection of songs and totally worth it, but of course you should focus on the albums, if you have to make choices what to buy.

It's great and you should get it. However, I think it makes a nice addition once you have come to love all the songs in their rightful places, on the albums.

There isn't a bad NMA album so it really doesn't matter which ones you get first.

cthulhu, thanks a lot for the pictures (and making them deliberately woozy  ;D) and thanks everyone for their answers! That definitely was helpful - I'm about to put my order together and will include it, but will put off listening to the new mixes until I've got to know the respective albums.

As to that - I still have Carnival, High, Today is a good Day, Between Dog and Wolf and Between Wine and Blood to look forward to. And Lost Songs. And the Vengeance - The Whole Story extra tracks. Plus various live recordings, including Justin Sullivan & Friends (I hope that doesn't make me an illiterate on here but so far you all have been extraordinarily friendly and helpful  :))

Next on my list is Strange Brotherhood, which I have listened to before but don't really know (it didn't quite grab me immediately in 1998 and I didn't put enough time in it then). I've gotten to really like the songs from there that are on the "& nobody else" Live-Album, though.

Edit: order completed. I can wait for the delivery, though, health of the employees is more important.

Whole-heartedly agree with Johnz.  :)  I would extend that to also include Mr. Sullivan's magnificent first solo effort, "Navigating By The Stars", as well.  It's absolutely stunning!  A masterpiece!!

"Navigating By The Stars" really ought to be properly re-released, both in CD & LP format, with much better worldwide access and distribution.  I only ever knew of "Navigating By The Stars" because I saw it available for purchase at a JS & DW gig, that they played back in 2003.  I immediately jumped at purchasing the CD there and then!   I just had this awful gut feeling, knew that I'd never find here, after then, somehow.  Boy, am I ever relieved I picked up "Navigating By The Stars" at that 2003 JS & DW gig!  'Cause when I went to the many local record shops we had here at the time, to look and ask for it, I always came back saddened, empty, disappointed.  Even the shop folks  stared back at me blankly.  NMA albums have always been incredibly difficult to find here, and I don't know if that's EMI's fault, OR what I'd rather believe, that there are a respectable amount of Canucks = Canadians, out here with exceptionally phenomenal taste in music!  8)

If solid 5pc NMA can't make it back here, to play a few gigs, particularly in Canada - (if and when this Corona-shit-disaster is done, or at best, fully settled, manageable, etc... of course) - then I really hope, pray, beg that we can get the blessing, gift, treasure of  Mr. Sullivan (either solo OR) along with Mr. White, to come over and play for all of us here.  There are a lot of faithful NMA devotees here, in Canada.  It's just a serious drag that the fcuking distance between us all, is far too wide.  That makes it too costly for in-person NMA/JS/JS&DW/RSC live performances / concerts to happen.  Too expensive for both the artists = NMA/JS/JS&DW/RSC :-\ and us, the fans... particularly if one wishes to see even just 2 gigs on a single tour.  :'(

I bought a few copies of "Navigating By The Stars" over the years.  A few copies as personal back-ups, you know, in case mine went missing or got damaged, and a couple I gifted to local Canadian musicians, here.  I even mailed one out to a major Canadian PUNK legend and contributor, D.O.A  frontman  Mr. Joe Keithley.  I actually sent Mr. Keithley a sizable stack of 6 or 7 from NMA, along with Mr. Sullivan's solo album.  The only NMA release I recall off-the-cuff, clearly, was NMA's extremely undervalued, incredibly blinding release "Lost Songs"... the other five or six, were NMA the most up-to-date recordings, at the time.  My memories fried, though.  I tend to gift and forget.  Sure hope those recordings reached  Mr. Keithley or at least, landed in the hands of folks who love and or appreciate all things NMA/JS, their works, repertoire, performances, etc.  :)

Oh, I did this a very long time ago, now.  It was immediately after me freaking out, going absolutely ape-shit, mental, over hearing both of these GREATS, being on the very same radio programme here in Canada, via telephone interview!  :D :D :D  It was a bit of a HUGE dream and a very, very surreal moment to me, actually.  8)  I so intensely,  strongly sense, that these two beautiful gentlemen would genuinely hit it off, become really good friends, great friends even - if they ever met in person.  Mr. Keithley  and  Mr. Sullivan appear too have just SO much in common, right down to the very year they were born and even their middle names, too!! 8)

THANKS for that incredible moment, Nardwuar!! :D  That's if you ever actually see or read this here post, lol, 'cause you're just seriously fcuking spooky that way, with how much you know about shit in general, especially when it pertains to anything Canadian or music-related.  Ahhh, man, Ruskin... some of them don't get you (off the bat), lol, you have a natural knack, serious way of freaking people out, dude, but you're still lovable and a real, genuine Canadian hero... warm lol, just of the nerdier, geeky, awesome variety.  Always entertaining, incredibly insightful and frighteningly knowledgeable!  As a fan, that Keithley / Sullivan interview, meeting was a great moment!!  I got all teary-eyed and everything!  It was one of the highlights for me, of that year!  If any fellow NMA devotees / fellow Canucks here know where I can hear that interview again, it'd be so intensely appreciated.  Please post details, etc.. here on the noticeboard.  Cheers!  :)

If folk outside Canada are wondering about Nardwuar... here are a couple interviews he did with the GREAT  Mr. Joshua Homme (& co.), frontman of another knock-out terrific band, Queens of the Stone Age.  warm lol, you'll either love Nardwuar or hate him, have a laugh or cringe.  I think Nardwuar's fab and most of his guests, or should I say victims, are wonderfully obliging, tolerant, and genuinely terrific sports!  Enjoy the following clips, or not, lol...
2003, 2005, 2007, 2011. 8)

Getting back on track... flodhaest, do you have a copy of Mr. Sullivan's "Navigating By The Stars" CD yet? ???  If not, I highly recommend it, especially if you tend to love, appreciate, and are particularly drawn to the softer side of NMA's repertoire as well.  You won't regret the purchase.  Anything NMA/JS/RSC is money very well spent and a wonderful investment of the mind, heart and soul. :)

Have a wonderful day flodhaest, Johnz, everyone, everywhere!  And take care.  Cheers. :)
