Justin Derby 15 Oct 2021 (photos)
« on: October 16, 2021, 12:34:44 AM »
Hi all,

Again, FANTASTIC gig tonight. The Venue was totally different to Blackpool - more like a large function room with a stage and a bar. All seating, but Justin did earn a standing ovation for a stand out performance.
Jess Silk (and fella - sorry missed his name but he was a whizz on the old mandola) got us well warmed up and in the mood. Her stuff is punchy, passionate and punky.
Justin came on and regaled us with stories and songs of Belfast, America, the race to the South Pole. Mel was happy as he played her two favourites from Surrounded - 1975 and Stone & Heather. Snelsmore Wood made an appearance in the encore. Similar setlist to the rest of the tour with minor variations,  but you could tell that Justin was enjoying himself, as were we.
All good food for the soul. Anyways, some pics for your perusal...

Thanks for this

Nice to see a slight chnage in the set list

I heard he also played Rivers too

I'm going again tonight and also Stowmarket and Shoreham so it would be interesting to see if there are any more changes to set list

The other person playing was Ewan P Stevens also from the Black Country

He plays in a band called The Bleeding Hearts, well worth checking out

Jess always puts a decent set on and puts her heart and soul into it

Cheers

I'm 'still here' Ghosttrain. :)  It's really great to see you up here, upstairs (=NMA related forums).  You're usually floating in the basement (=everything else section).  Hey!  Why don't you start a thread?  I don't think you've ever done so, yet.  Or am I wrong?  Have you? ???

This official NMA noticeboard is home to me and the only real reason why I will ever be online, period.  When this magnificent ship goes down, you can bet I'll be going down with it.  I have absolutely no intentions, whatsoever, of subscribing to facebook or twitter... ever!  Even though the best NMA/JS juice can be tasted at those two sites, I still refuse to join FB and twitter.

I'm missing out on so much, I know, but there are just too many reasons why I loathe those two social platforms.  I treasure this place like none of you'd even believe.  I too, :( wish people would come home.  I miss everyone.

NMA/JS own this place, this space.
They built it for all of us.
We owe it to them...
out of immense love, gratitude and respect,
to keep it alive and thriving for future generations.
It doesn't take much to do our bit.  So please,
'Come back, when you're ready... ahh!'.

'Where I am', when I visit?  Well...

Usually off in some corner, alone, weeping to myself in silence (yeah, I've got a lot of personal problems... ain't the first and certainly won't be the last, sadly).

Sometimes I come wanting to begin new threads, but am afraid of coming off like I'm dominating, bombarding this precious space with too many posts / threads all at once, or believe that folk won't be into my topics (enough to post in them), that I let it stop me altogether.

Other times I'm itching like mad to bump up seriously old threads (because I missed them the first time around... I was off for 7 years), but again, I end up stopping myself because I don't want to piss off the house moderator for doing so (which has happened already, I don't want to further upset / anger anyone, anywhere, ever... that is never my intent or why I come here).

Sometimes I check in, but because of day-to-day crap that needs getting done first, I don't end up posting due to lack of time.  embarrassed soft lol, :-\ I think it also needs pointing out that I'm an extremely slow typist, for the times when I actually am here to talk about something..

Hi all,

Hi fiddlesticks! :)

Again, FANTASTIC gig tonight.  The Venue was totally different to Blackpool - more like a large function room with a stage and a bar.  All seating, but Justin did earn a standing ovation for a stand out performance.

Wish I was there to witness that!  What a wonderful and gracious audience.  Thrilled you were able to be there, fiddlesticks.  Hope you'll be seeing NMA too, somewhere, this year! :)

Justin came on and regaled us with stories and songs of Belfast, America, the race to the South Pole.

Mr. Sullivan's often said that the songs speak for themselves; however, there's a particularly special, undeniably generous, superior kind of warmth, that comes along with the words (and stories) JS chooses to extend / share with his audience, in those tiny spaces between songs.  For the many who catch more than one gig on a tour (where the setlist doesn't change too much), those are the moments which add that extra bit of tenderness, beauty, richness, brightness, that element of surprise, etc. to the whole overall vibe, live gig experience.  It makes and keeps things just a touch more intimate, real, interesting, engaging, different, vibrant, unpredictable, fresh, exciting.  At least this is what I've found / realised.

It's a very sacred thing when artist(s) choose to speak to their audience, be it on or off stage, directly or indirectly.  They certainly don't have to!!  There are SO many that actually don't.  Which is all the more reason why those kind of sacred moments with the artist(s) that choose to go out of their way to connect with their following, should never be taken for granted.  It's the best thing to have happen, I think.  Especially when they speak outside of song(s), to all of us.  These seemingly small gestures from the artists we love so much, should be profoundly cherished, treasured and highly regarded by ALL who've been blessed by such special moments... for it is in and through those wonderful moments, that we truly see and feel the artist's kindness and generosity.  No greater gift could there ever be, then those sacred moments.  None!  xxxxx

How wonderful!!  Best soul food ever!! :)

I wonder what the story is behind this intriguing photo (above).  I can't imagine Mr. Sullivan taking a personal call while on stage, lol.  Was someone's cell phone confiscated or something like that? ???  Is it even a cell phone?  Fiddlesticks (or anyone else who was there) able and willing to enlighten me?  Anyone? :-\ Please post?  Thanking whomever does so here, now, in advance.  Thank you. :)

Mr. Sullivan's absolutely stunning in the above photograph! ::) Who in their right mind, heart, soul and body wouldn't 'walk a million miles for one of' his 'smiles, eh? ::)  Who?  'He's so fine'Ohhh, so rare and SOooooooo fine! 8)

I think a simple thank you isn't enough for posting these wonderful photos, fiddlesticks!!  Consider yourself hugged to life, again!  Your post(s) / photos of JS more than made my day!  thank you.  Thank you!  THANK YOU!! :)

Hi Ghosttrain.  When I referred to the Everything Else section as the basement, I didn't mean anything bad or negative by it... in no way whatsoever, not at all.  Basements here in North America tend to be very roomy, spacious, and at times made to look like the rest of a home... not some unfinished, poorly-lit, dark, damp, cellar-like space used for the storage of things.  Here, basements often have a very big recreational / party room used specifically to accommodate for large gatherings on sport nights and holidays.  They're where all the fun stuff happens.  Perhaps it was a poor analogy or choice of words on my part.  Please accept my apology?  I wasn't aiming to upset or offended anyone.  I'm not that kind of person.

As for forum readers, there are more than just 2 of us that read these pages.  Most people who check in don't tend to post, why, I have no clue... but there are definitely more readers here than participants in conversation or topics.  I must confess, though, that I tend to mainly stick to the NMA related topics, which is why I rarely read or check out most of the threads in the Everything Else section.

I apologise, Ghosttrain. :-\ I'm not good at articulating, expressing my thoughts, feelings, etc. via word(s) and ought to mention that I continually failed English :( while still in school.

Oh, by the way, the smartphone was for the only number lovingly referred to as "the karaoke track" - "You Weren't There".
