Brother intro
« on: April 09, 2023, 08:43:33 AM »
Hello everyone, I've been lurking here for about 15 years now, but this might very well be my first post.

I am binge-listening to the full NMA discography and I've just got to one of my all-time favourites, Brother.

Is it known at all where the intro is coming from, what language it is, what it means, etc.? Tried googling, but found nothing useful.

Cheers

I've got a vague recollection of reading somewhere that Aky Nawaz (Southern Death Cult/Fun-Da-Mental) did the intro but there's no mention in the sleeve notes . If so, then I guess it would be sung in Urdu and it does remind me  of some of the bhangra singing I recall from back in the days when I lived in Bra'fud, but I could be completely wrong about that...

It doesn't sound like Urdu to me....but I could be wrong. Could possibly be Punjaabi. I've never been able to quite figure it out.

Thanks, guys. I also remember reading something about this here, back in the 2010's, but I came up blank. Will keep searching.

Hi TheHun,

"Brother" is on the "Queen of My Heart" maxi CD, and the booklet says it has additional vocals by Inder Goldfinger. He was part of Fun-Da-Mental, so Winterwulf is half right. ;)

Thanks Stefanie, I must have seen it was one of the guys out of Fun-Da-Mental at some point, and assumed it was Aky since Justin's known him since the early days of the band.

Looking at the lyrics again brings back memories of the rising tensions in Bradford in the mid-90s. I was out of town the weekend it all kicked off, in the company of a Manningham born-and-bred lad and I remember we just looked at each other when the news came through and commented that it was going to happen sooner or later - the tinderbox was just waiting for the spark, and then the city burned...

Inder Goldfinger is listed in Lost Songs as the voice in the mid section (break).

seem to recall the intro was a sample, but is taken mid sentence so does not make sense translated.

It is a tough one. Imagine, you are in a pub / bar with an internet Duke-box, you go and put a song one and tell those around you -- "this song is one of my all time faourite songs", and then it starts, and that start starts to feel like it is going on for ever.   :-[ :-\ :)
The longer this century goes on, the more I feel I belong in the last one.
