Not at all. I wasn't there during the incident and didn't know anyone involved particularly well. First time I've checked the board for a few days been insanely busy.

Anyway there was animosity between the journo in question and the band. He, I was given to understand, was a annoying prick who felt it was clever to constantly name check the BNP when he was writing for Melody Maker. On one such occasion he finished a negative review of a gig by Asian band Cornershop with the line "The British National Party must be opening the champagne". He was not a racist just an idiot trying to find ways to be 'risky'.

Anyway two people gave me similar accounts of what happened during the Blaggers incident. They were supporting manic Street Preachers on tour and the journo in question decided to try and spice up his story by provoking some kind of reaction from Matty the singer of the band. He (I'm told) was harrassing Matty all night telling him that he was no better than the Nazis because he advocated direct action against them. Also that because he was a member of the British Movement as a teenager he was still a mindless boot boy ect.. ect... After several hours of provocation Matty snapped and punched him out.

Melody Maker made a huge deal out of it saying that charges were going to be brought. That Matty was going to end up in court along with band as his accessories and all kinds of wild claims. In the end it seems the police made some enquiries and took the matter no further. Make of that what you will. The journo in question is still making snide remarks about anyone who mixes politics with music. Meanwhile poor Matty whose life was turbulent to say the least died many years ago.

Cheers, Guy, that's an interesting story.  I hate violence of any kind but I can deffo believe that.  I look at the music magazines nowadays and maybe it's me getting old but they seem to have so little to do with actual MUSIC... it's all about what makes them look cool so they can get plenty of dickheads still buying their silly paper.
