Hey, Tony, we're friends seeing as you're on this board, you can call me Ray!   

I am a fan of PL since 'Gothic' and I love most of their albums, regardless of what they sounded like.  I don't care whether they were 'metal' or not, I just care about the songs and how good they were.  And even during their most experimental years, I think there were some excellent songs.  I have to admire a band who were breaking big into the worldwide metal scene and thought 'nah... we're not doing that, we'll do an album or two that sounds like Depeche Mode'...   

After Host flopped, the guitars came back, by degrees.  Believe In Nothing, Symbol Of Life, Paradise Lost and In Reqiuem are a progression of albums that got heavier (but with some very catchy tunes along the way that hark back to the more tuneful keyboard-y stuff before.).

If I could recommend one album to you, it would be the brilliant 'Faith Divides Us, Death Unites Us' from 2009.  Heavy, melodic, it's a proper successor to Draconian Times or Icon.  Just a great album.  After that, go through Tragic Idol, The Plague Within and Medusa, it gets heavier from album to album.

Yo Ray, cheers for this. Ha, ha, funnily enough I thought Host had a Depeche Mode kind of vibe going on too ! I never had the previous album, One Second. I am reminded though that I haven't listened to Draconian Times for ages. I must remedy that soon. Icon was fantastic !  I agree with you that it doesn't really matter that they tried a totally different sound for a couple of albums. I like bands who experiment like that. Remember all the hoo-ha when NMA released Between Dog and Wolf? A loot of people just couldn't get into it at all, as it was a departure from previous albums. Personally I loved it from the word go.
I've had a listen to the tracks you've recommended - all sound good ! I can see I have a lot of PL catching up to do !

To be honest, I drifted away from PL for a long while as well, it was 'Faith Divides us, Death Unites Us' that brought me back after a random purchase, bought cheap in a record shop that had me thinking 'Wow, these guys still going? Well, it's a cheap buy, let's see what they sound like these days...' and that was the start of investigating the stuff I'd missed.  I enjoyed it all, hope your experience is just the same.   

Back to the whole idea of 'song you're listening to right now...'  well, posting that last comment has made me put 'One Second' on again!

I will definitely check this out Ray. Blimey, I see there's a 20th Anniversary cd version of this album with a 2nd disc of a live set at the Shepherds Bush Empire in 1998. For a minute I thought I might have been there, as I know I saw them live once in London sometime in the 90s.  But a little bit of searching and I've realised it was actually this gig at the Astoria 2 four years earlier when I saw them, and they were supported by a band called Crowbar. That was a hot, sweaty gig as far as I recall !!
