Music mix before an NMA/ Justin/Dean gig
« on: February 14, 2012, 09:38:49 AM »
Some of us were wondering about the compilation of music that we hear at the start of pretty much every NMA or Justin/Dean solo gig and it seem it is a mix compilation by Justin or the band. Can anyone list the tracks as everytime I hear them I get excited by the prospect of seeing NMA live. Maybe this has already been listed in another thread, I am not sure.

Thanks!

J

yep, we were wondering in this topic (I post it in case people respond in the other one too :))

To summarize, here's a quote :)

Quote
does anyone know if it's always Justin that bring the music to play before / after the gig ? I'm pretty sure it used to be him (had too many times various Motown, Cypress Hill and Noir Désir before the gigs to be just a coincidence) but lastly seemed to me there was a lots of old Trojan records, perhaps I'm fooling myself, am I the only one that wonder ?

Sadly looks like the above link has 'died' in the recent NMA board spring clean. Whatever it is and whatever the mix contains it certainly gets you in the mood pre gig, but also there this tremendous feeling of anticipation 15 mins before NMA take to the stage anyway which always helps - cos adrenalin is the strongest drug that there has ever been...

My bad for the link, the forum add an additional "http" at the beginning, edited :)

To me, it's not whatever music before the gig, it's really not that often that a band take the time to play music they like before a show, and by this way try to makes you discover music they like. Covers are a great way for that too (I get into The Ruts much more after hearing a cover of "In a Rut" by NMA in 1991 during a gig in Caen, even if Justin didn't helped to find out which band it was by just saying something like "this should be part of everybody musical education" and by mixing the song, if I'm correct, with a The Animals song, "We've Gotta Get Out of This Place" :)). And I had to listen again to Queen of the Stone Age after that Justin told me it was his favorite band of the moment (was around 2002 if I'm correct), even if I still not really enjoyed the band after that :) (that was just to mention what I discovered by NMA, many bands made me dig for music after I discovered that one of their song was a cover too).

Music is something to share (and don't take this as a "go download everything", I mean like the tapes we used to do for friends in school, to make them discover what we recently bought, I still remember my first NMA tape, made by a friend).

Well I was thinking that it was the pre gig curry and the pints of cider you consumed!

Here you are: http://www.amazon.com/300-Dynamite-Soul-Rocksteady-Jamaica/dp/B000027436

Excuse me, but what is exactly this link, you don't explain :) This, for sure, isn't the record they play before the gig, as there's artists much more various than just a Ska / Rocksteady compilation :) And Titles are not what we heard (for example, they played Max Romeo / Lee Perry "I Chase The Devil" that is on neither 100%, 200%, 300% or even 400% :)). But those looks nice compilations, for someone that don't want to bother with more than 40 Trojan Box Set as I do ;).

Not exactly a pre gig music mix but used to love music from 633 squadron before NMA came on in late eighties. It just felt Right.
Same with Waltzinblack at a Stranglers gig.Brilliant

This used to be the pre- and post-gig music at the JS&F gigs back in 2002/2003.
And I think I heard at least some of the songs in Bremen/Hamburg last year as well :)
