« on: April 12, 2013, 05:53:37 PM »
Hi all. This old lady is finally getting herself across the pond for a week's visit. April 28-May 5, Have a rail pass. Going to BFF in Edinburgh and then heading south. What is worth seeing and going to that week that on old anarchist witch would appreciate? Thanks.

Evening mi duck.

Depends what kind of UK experience you are looking for.

Edinburgh is a good place to start. Really nice city. The Castle well worth a visit. I usually advice American friends to visit Old York. Its a bit tourist industry dominated, but still a really nice place. Where are you going to end up, London?

Most Americans I know have only ever visited London, which is fair enough, but not a true representative of the Country. Its a bit like, many people who have been State side usually go to New York first. I like the Southern States for a true taste of America.

Starting up in Edinburgh and then going south. Flying out of Heathrow to get back home. I do want to see some megalith sites also. Not much time that I will be there. It is hard to get away being a working stiff. I am not that interested in London-friends say it is much like NYC, and I appreciate rural areas better anyway.

My favourate country side area in the Uk is Derbyshire - but keep that to yourself, Im from Nottingham. There is realy nice and historic village called Eyam. This village is locally famous for being isolated in 1665 for having the plague. REally nice contry side in the area also. I suppose for megalithic period, your ultimate is Stonehenge in Wlitshire.  Sorry, I do not know much about it myself. I am total history buff, but thats too early for me.

Castlerigg stone circle near keswick in the lake district is good, not nearly as big as Stonehenge, then there is also the  Long Meg stone circle not too far away from there, I'll get back to you which villages it is nearby. Also, Northumberland coast line including Holy Island well worth a look see

Long Meg stone circle is near a very small village called Little Salkeld, between Penrith & Alston. As cloggdaner said above, Castlerigg best for senery & views

Surprised to not see home town being mentioned on here? Cloggdancer FOR SHAME SIR!!!!!!
Bradford is of obvious interest, scenic vistas, interesting history, not to mention a certain Mr Sullivan's prediliction of writing about actual places or Joolz describing in poetic prose, the buildings changing colour as the sun sets on the fair city......... Just saying.
Warkworth Castle, and Alnick Castle in Northumberland are worth a visit aswell as you travel down from Edinburgh. Lindisfarne is nearby aswell.......

Yes Avebury is on the must do list. I have heard that is THE site, and the Stonehenge is very underwhelming. i appreciate the info and suggestions! Keep them coming! Also any Beltane related or 1st of May events that are worth going to. Folk festivals also!

Well I thank you all for the suggestions. I went to Edinburgh for Beltain Fire and then down in Keswick to see Castlerigg-amazing and awe-inspiring! I also got to love the town and the region. I then travelled to Avebury and truly yes overwhelming. I would like if possible to see Stonehenge but I want to WALK within the stone circle!

Avebury was quite a site and seeing the circle's size, the Avenue, Silbury Hill and the Long Barrow was wonderful. I am involved with a community of people here in Pennsylvania, Four Quarters interfaith who have been in the process of raising a stone circle on the church grounds. If you are ever over here I recommend you visit if possible. It is quite rural out that way, but that is what makes it lovely.

glad you liked Castlerigg, the summuer solstice sunrise is worth seeing there too if you are ever over at that time of the year. however, last time i went there to see it it was spoiled by people using the edge of the field for number two's & the rest of the field as a litter bin for their empty beer cans, and these were all the animal right / eco warrior types, you would think they would know better
