sheffield pubs & stuff

For anyone coming to the Sheffield gig and after pub recommendations… here we go..

For those who likes real ale - you've come to the right place s- its become a bit of a real ale mecca in recent years with loads of really good pubs...

The obvious pub not too far from the venue is The Devonshire Cat - which is bang next door to Corporation (where the band have played last 2 time sin Shef)  - its a big real ale pub with reasonable food and lots of space & tables.
http://www.devonshirecat.co.uk

Just round the corner is The Washington - which is a good vaguely alt pub (but not great beer) - though as its now open till 3am now - it never really gets going till midnight

Actually in the station is the Sheffield Tap - which is well worth a detour - stupid variety of beer in a lovely refurbished setting - though its not cheap...

Between the station and the venue is the Rutland, a traditional pub with a good cross section of alt/arty folk & a few folk off/just got back from the football. Good beer/ciders & "hearty" fare (they do a paratha/chips/bhaji/curry sauce butty - its not the healthy option!!)

If you're here for the day - the area round Kelham Island has quite a few real ale pubs (Fat Cat, Kelham island, Harlequin, Shakespeare, Riverside & Wellington) - in fact there is Vale of Ale pub crawl starting in Hillsborough and taking in about 12 pub which is always a good saturday session... though a bit of a challenge if you want to get into the gig..

I've missed out the rock pubs - but if anyone fancies seeing the land that time forgot - a trip to The Nelson near the venue is always good value

FOOD

Food wise - if anyone has a bit of time to kill - London Rd - (about 15 minutes to the start from venue) has loads of chinese, vietnamese, turkish, thai and just about everyother sort of restaurant
spread along - Noodle Inn is a good bet for stupidly big portions.

West St/Division st also has a large selection of places from chippies to kebab shops to chains to some unusual restaurants

There are a few chinese places near the venue itself - but i've never been in so cannot comment.

thats should keep you going for a bit!

:)

Some good suggestions there, the Rutland is by far the best closest pub & the upstairs room should be open too. Their food is fantastic too!!

I'm sure a few of us will manage to visit a few of the pubs around Kelham Island during the afternoon, even with the crutches!! :)

Anyone who was at my 40th will alredy be familiar with Shakespeares which has won local CAMRA pub of the year  ;D

Just a quick question do any pubs near venue show football as FA Cup Final is on just before gig (kick off 5.15 WTF is that all about). Saw  this bar - The Common Room on internet. Is it any good and how far from venue.
We always burned brightest when no one was watching.

The Common room is a bit of a "lads" bar - lots of pool tables & sport - but alright for what it is- its about 10/15 mins from venue. In terms of atmosphere for televised game s- Walkabout is probably best - its maybe 15/20 mins from venue and is a big barn of a pub with massive screens

the take away curry place across the road will deliver to the Shakespeare as well - and the pub seem fine about you eating it in there  :)

Don't forget...there's the After-Gig Gathering in Bar 27 immediately following the Sheffield gig. Some classic punk, indie, goth, alternative...and lots of NMA. On until 1.30am I think...    :)
Since Reading Festival '86...

Bar 23 is indeed in west one, however bar 27 the after party venue is on Boston St, just behind Aldi about 5mins walk from the plug :)

I've just realised where I know the street name - the entrance to the Locarno/Palais/Music Factory/Bed etc was on Boston St many years ago
