Urban 75 NMA review
« on: July 21, 2013, 08:09:06 PM »
Found this discussion on the Urban 75 discussion site titled,, New Model Army - Crap or Not Crap.

Some interesting comments. Opinion here does seem to be divided into love or hate, but who would have it any other way. Some of the more harsh comments thrown at the fan base -- groovy !!!

'I prefer the Kings Of Leon because they can emote...'

My God, that'd better be trolling because, if not, then I'm about to go all big-green-rage monster... (you know, Incredible Hulk...)

"new Model Army? Crap now, not then. Back then they were - make no bones about it - one of the best bands. Full stop. Period.

"Thunder And Consolation" is, without doubt, their best album, and one dodgy track on the CD aside (a CD bonus track that used to be a B-Side, which is 'Chinese Whispers') a flawless album.

"impurity" and "ghost of Cain" a close second.

Post 1994, the lyrics went really downhill. They used to be precise, economic, and incisive. After that it was all "I walk thought the valleys, the endless whisper of clouds" and all that. The words became nothing more than stuff that rhymed with imagery, rather than focused and incisive. Post 94, I think I heard one or two decent tracks at best. It's because Rob Heaton left, and he was the principal songwriter. He was also - having met him once or twice - one of the nicest guys you could ever meet."

"liked them in my youth but got tired (1) of their rather pious sanctimonious and sourfaced approach to everything and (2) the utter knobheads who followed them around eveywhere and who were even more ******* precious and up their own arses."

Crikey, I never realised that i was such an unpleasant person because I like this band  :o.

Mind you I finally put the car sticker from the box set on the car yesterday and I got in it this morning to find someone had written that rather unpleasant C word on my windscreen (clever fuckers tho' cos they had done it to be read from the inside). I'd assumed it was for another reason but obviously it was an anti NMA poster from Urban 75. Dear oh dear people can get a bit over excited!

The last posting there was 2011?

Now we have 2013 and a new album and some new songs  ;)

And me, I`ve got a black place in my heart
Still got this hole in me
Perhaps - I am the master of nothing?

I have a lot of (sadly misguided) friends who think that NMA are "a bit much", because they actually care about stuff and make no bones about expressing it.

Basically, I don't give two figs what they think.

It did, however, highlight that there is a lot of derision, or even hatred, for NMA and their supporters. Not necessarily from people I know, but this linked thread is real proof of that.

I don't know if they attract more hatred than other bands, but it's definitely there. I guess, like anything that actually means something more than generic trash, there's always going to be people who strongly oppose it.

I'm a bit bemused by the comments about the fans, though. Every NMA gig I've been to, I've found myself right near the front and NEVER had a single issue with aggression or unwelcoming people. Everyone just seems to be there for a great time.

Guillaume, I have to say, I didn't at first notice the quotation marks around the comment you re-posted... I was about to go all Liam Neeson in 'Taken' on your ass... 'I will hunt you, I will find you and I WILL kill you...'  ;D

To be fair, I think most of the comments are from people with limited exposure to the band, especially if they focus on the late 80's period... I can also see how some people might have found the band and their following a bit intimidating at times.  I can remember fights breaking out at quite a few gigs back in the day and I can also remember uncomfortable pub-meets with various factions staring daggers at each other...

IMO, now is the best time to be an NMA fan.  Everythings a bit more mellow now, the music is just as good as it ever was (perhaps even better, if the few advance reviews of BDAW are anything to go by!) and, in a world where everything seems to be sliding slowly into shit, being in the presence of like-minded souls is a joyful thing.  See you in November.

 ;)

Well said Master Ray!

Now which songs do you think would fit well a Dario Argento or Brian De Palma film Master Ray? ;)

Oh, G, now I've something else to drag out of my cluttered mind (although it's a brilliant question)...

I'll get back to you on your specific thread...
