Dipple, you may well need to have a subscription to The Times to read it on line, but here it is:

"New Model Army at the Forum, NW5

One of the great lost tribes of rock, New Model Army made one of their periodic resurgences this year with their most successful album for two decades. Between Dog and Wolf marks a creative renaissance for the group from Bradford and has provided a springboard for a forthcoming film of the same name, which tells the heroic story of a band who inspired a passionate cult following in the 1980s and, despite appearances to the contrary, simply never went away.
Going to one of their gigs in 2013 felt like gaining admission to a pagan, post-punk, masonic gathering. Men in the mosh area in front of the stage took their shirts off and during a song called High , a couple of them stood fully erect, arms outstretched, on their friends’ shoulders. This number was offered by the singer and guitarist Justin Sullivan as a replacement national anthem for Scotland or indeed any country in need of a modern call to arms. “Pay no heed to unfaithful messengers,” he sang, his long, brown hair framing his weathered, rock-warrior features.
Sullivan, the sole remaining original member of the group, was a lean, charismatic figure, dishing out harsh home truths and neat guitar riffs with a clipped air of authority. Around him the rest of the five-man band created a dense, menacing musical patchwork built around heavy, war-drum tattoos supplied by Michael Dean behind the main kit and the bass player Ceri Monger, whose duties also included hammering a pair of floor toms when demanded.
New songs Pull the Sun and Stormclouds pursued an elemental theme with a fierce, but intelligent intensity, while old favourites including The Hunt, No Rest and Vengeance hacked into the rock motherlode with a still feral aggression. With fists, blood and an over-active lightshow pumping, they reached a grand, emotional finale with Green and Grey. Victory never gets any closer, but the long march forward continues."

Not too shabby a review that, might've nice to mention Marshall n Dean since Michael n Ceri were named?  But it is the Times and maybe I'm being picky? Still, a positive review from the people in Blue Ties Paper eh? Happy days..........  Thanx for saving us the subscription!

Thanks for posting the review. Pretty good one I think. And in one of the most unlikely locations, had been checking The Guardian & Independent just in case that pig did fly but I never considered The Times. Nice! A review like that in a "traditional" media is a welcome dose of recognition for the band - good on yer' chaps.

Going onto the wordy stuff I particularly liked "One of the great lost tribes of rock", "a pagan, post-punk, masonic gathering", "fierce, but intelligent intensity" and "the long march forward continues".

Who knows, p'raps they'll review the film  :o

p.s. should this be in "The Reviews Keep Coming"?

Thanks for posting the review and set list.  Awesome gig.  Also had to leave after the end of the main set - first time I've ever had to do that, oh well.  Really loved the new material and the extra backing vocals on those songs, having read somewhere Justin saying iirc that many (all?) are impossible to play live exactly as they're recorded.  And the double drumming was so intense.

Until the next time,
Jon

Awesome set, awesome people! What a great day we all had. It was so nice to meet all you there: Stoney, welsh_beard, Gothwin, Jonas, Magnus and NickyG. Special thanks to Nicky for all the great help and tips we got from him on Sat!

Have to tell a joke I asked/told to Michael Dean at the Assembly (unfortunately D. White wasn't present) Q: "How many Deans does it take to change in a light bulb?" Michael's answer: No one, because I'll do it anyway.  :)

What an awesome night on Saturday. I thought it was a fantastic gig, and luckily I didn't have to miss the encores. Met some lovely people up at the front, Dave (from Manchester) and Claire. Also, and I'm so sorry I think I've forgotten your name - Lucy was it ?  I didn't make it upstairs in the end, as had to get my last train home. Also met Xombieboy, and a few others beforehand whose names I've also shamefully forgotten, but I'm sure one was Jack.
I also had the great pleasure of meeting Justin, and chatting for a few short minutes after the soundcheck, and that was certainly a huge highlight. Thanks for your time JS, and thanks to Daz for the introduction. Huge thanks too to Lynn (should you happen to read this !) for arranging this for me xx

Thanks for posting the full review Viv. Always good to read positive reviews of gigs. Only went to the Manchester gig myself, which was excellent. Early new years resolution is to get to more gigs next year.
