I think this topic of conversation is in danger of going sour

I disagree. Man, if we can't talk about the mistakes and the horrors of war...then we clearly can't learn from them. The fact that this board is international...well, I welcome your thoughts. Your perspective may be polar opposite of mine or right in line. Interesting to find out.

(Little fact: foreigners thoughts of Vietnam are actually in synch with American thoughts on Vietnam. We both know it was wrong. If you think we all love Rambo over here...well, we don't even love Rocky over here.)

you make light of the war crime that was the Burma railway

1. It's called gallows humor. And if you knew anything about the atrocities in Burma (and elsewhere during WWII) you'd know the British soldier was quite adept at gallows humor. It was one of very few things that got those brave men through such desperate situations. God bless them all. (And God damn those Japanese who put them through it.)

2. And if you want to really learn about the Burma rail line, I suggest you stop watching movies and read a book called "The Railway Man." Yeah, they made a movie of that book, but it is the book that brings tears to any man's eyes. Possibly the best WWII book I have read (and I have read hundreds of them).
"The Railway Man" by Eric Lomax -- read it.

Uhh, exactly why would that matter?

I am not one to cede to anyone just because of what they do for a living. This is Whirlwind you are speaking to.

Aw, sweetie, it's up to Shush to confirm that statement, if he chooses not to, that's his choice.  Suffice to say you are SO far on the losing end of this argument that it's not even funny...  :D

No one couldn't be that silly that expects films presenting a viewpoint that should satisfy everyone or even be generally accepted "thruth". There are different thruths, each counterpart having their own. If the film presented views we've always felt familiar to it would fail in.

In that way could we say that the director of the Dunkirk successed very well as it seems to make you complain the theme. That's ART if it's never perfect.

1..There are different thruths,...

.
1. My friend, you sound like you work for the Trump administration when you say "there are different truths." One of Trump's people actually said they are presenting "alternative facts." Man, did we laugh over here over that one. Friend, there are no such things as "different truths." There is one truth. 2 + 2 = 4. Truth is one thing. No such thing as "different truths."

2. I agree with you on point #2. Art is supposed to be challenging. The director of DUNKIRK was not making a documentary, so I accept his version of the event. And I can complain about his version of the event. That is what art is for. Art is not meant to please all, but to challenge all. Jon Bon Jovi music is meant to please. That's why it is not art. NMA music challenges. That is why it is art.

Just gave 'Jumanji - Welcome To The Jungle' a go.  Really enjoyed it, nice to see a family-orientated fantasy movie that isn't full of mass destruction and death (Transformers, the usual Marvel / DC movies etc) but with loads of humour and an actual warmth to it.  A fun, light and amusing watch if you're in the mood for something like that.

Just a bit of offtopic again:

Whirlwind  [...]

Although I see the point you meant with politics, we should not compare them together. It's a totally different thing to talk about "thruth" within politics, and talk about what is "allowed" in art.

Besides that, I like to enter a bit of phenomenological thinking at times. In phenomenological context every being in the world experiences things in their own way. F.e. if two people hear the same song they might feel it in different colors (synaesthesia), emotions etc. When they express their feelings about a same town their feelings can be very different. (At times I can get a "feeling" of some certain color when I hear an exact tune.)

Oh, should we move on now back to movies...

Rusco, you hit the nail on the head. Their is not one truth. Any side in an argument will see truth differently.
Anyhoo. Watchmen. Never seen it from start to finish, like the Green Mile. Good film
Hala (from the Anglo-Saxon word "halh", meaning nook or remote valley), until it was gifted by King Henry II to Welsh Prince David Owen and became known as Halas Owen

Yes, we can get back to movies...and STILL talk about truth. Ever see RASHOMON? It is the premier film that deals with truth. Truth is extremely subjective in that film. Four different characters recount the same story...and it is told in four completely different versions. Same event, yet we have four truths. (Point in that film is that truth soothes one's ego. Valid point. Just look at our Mr. Trump. His truth is always to soothe his ego. "Biggest crowd ever! Biggest tax cuts ever! Biggest margin of victory ever! I have the biggest hands!" Yup, truth for many is merely a device to make oneself look better.

What is truth? For an interesting exposition on truth, I suggest the film RASHOMON:

The Big Lebowski.God knows how many times I've seen this film.I don't remember a movie has it's own festival organized by it's fans and it's still surviving after 20 years since it's released.Even there was a store in Manhattan NY called The Lebowski Shop.Sorry to hear it doesn't exist anymore.A cult film with great characters and acting.Needless to say about script and quotes.

Tango One - not quite your usual guns gangsters film , it's certainly a lot more smarter than the norm. Not many descent films about so it's a try.
