I just watched the film  "They shall not grow old" shown today on the 100th anniversary of the wars end on BBC T.V. For me it was absolutely amazing. Starts off with regular black and white footage, then flows into colour. Its quite startling when it does. It was very strange seeing footage I have seen many times before suddenly in clear colour with sound effects and leveled out to correct speed. The film throughout is narrated by recordings of old soldiers describing their war experiences, the sound effects added to the footage in the background and tastefully done. It was very powerful stuff to watch. Well know stills such as the regularly used image of a Tommy in a captured German trench on the Somme were shown now in colour. Many of the images are now suddenly very graphic. When describing actual attacks on enemy trenches, art work was used as no actually footage of such exists. There were some issues of continuity, the famous footage of the mine explosion 1/7/16 immediately followed by tank footage, but then again it was not a documentary on any particular battle. It is all WW1 British footage, but anybody who has any level of interest in the First World War will get a lot out of watching it. Already instructed my wife to add a DVD of it to my Xmas list. Peter Jackson is well known for having an interest in WW1. I think he has done himself proud with this film

Just caught up with that. It completely humanises the war. From the initial join up to the end of it and how the soldiers were let down by the country they fought for. It also showed the mutual respect between the British and German front line troops, despite the barbarism that also happened between them.
And ultimately how bloody stupid the whole thing was.
Fantastic film and shows just how much we owe in debt to those men. Id often wondered how long we would keep paying tribute, when other wars are now consigned to history books. This film shows why, to any thinking person, its only a short step back in time.
Truly humbled.

I watched it on Sunday night too. It really was a superb piece of work. Like you there were some bits of film I knew I had seen before in their original form, but with the new treatment they were so much more real. I felt it closed the time gap between then and now as well, and made it so much easier to see these people just like people we all know now. Some parts were very graphic and hard to watch, but hearing the veterans describing the horrors in very matter or fact ways gave an indication of how they must have become de-densitised to the sheer carnage - to some extent ! I found that happening myself in a way - during the most intense and difficult part, I felt myself sort of shutting down almost into a trance as the awfulness continued. A truly remarkable film, and definitely worth seeing. Peter Jackson dedicated it to his grandfather who served in WW1. I thought of two of my Great grandfathers whilst watching - one who fought in the Battle of the Somme, and thankfully survived - if he hadn't, my Grandfather wouldn't have been born in the 1920s, and obviously neither would I. The other one sadly died of malaria shortly before the end of the war. Also thought of my partner's Grandfather who joined up in 1915 aged 17 or 18 and served with the Royal Army Medical Corps till 1919. Apparently he never spoke about the war afterwards, and it doesn't surprise me, thinking about the things he must have seen as such a young man  :(

Just finished watching the new version of 'A Star Is Born', not something I'd normally watch but great reviews all around so I gave it a punt... and it was really rather good.  A lot gritter and darker than the trailer suggests.  And I'm not really a fan of Bradley Cooper or Lady Gaga but they were both excellent. Some pretty good tunes as well. I'd give it a recommend...

OK, just around to watching TSNGO.  Just superb.  I don't mind admitting that a few tears were shed.  Also, oddly, there were some laughs as well.  The use of CGI was just magnificent.  Apparently Peter Jackson didn't get paid for making this film, just did it as an act of tribute. Well done, sir.  This is truly a work of art.

That applies to those who have money.

Peter Jackson is quite wealthy...thus he can work on a film gratis. Ask yourself this.....twenty years ago did Peter Jackson ever make a film without pay?
