Not exactly 'films I'm watching right now' but another website I'm somewhat active on asked me for my favourite films of 2024 and after much deliberation (I had 26 movies I really loved from last year that almost made the list!) so many of these have you seen?  Or even heard of?   ;D

1 - Furiosa - A Mad Max Saga

2 - Hundreds Of Beavers

3 - The Substance

4 - The Iron Claw

5 - The Holdovers

6 - Kneecap

7 - Maxxxine

8 - The Outrun

9 - Late Night With The Devil

10 - Civil War.

Well, that new version of 'Nosferatu' is just superb, great cast playing absolute blinders throughout, the cinematography is magnificent, it's just a terrific horror movie.  Can't recommend it highly enough!   :D

Holy crap, if you've got Netflix then get onto 'Adolescence', just watched the first two episodes and it's the best show I've seen in years...

Gotta be honest, if I'm going with UK gangland TV shows then I'll stick with Gangs Of London... S3 is showing right now but seeing as it's been two years since the last series I gotta rewatch S2, my memory isn't good enough these days!   :-[   ;D

'The White Lotus' is one of those shows that shows that is something of a cultural phenomenon over the last few years, never watched it but binge watched the first series over the Easter weekend, what a bloody great show it is.  Very glad I caught up with it and really looking forward to the rest of it.

I had a fun time with 'Havoc', Tom Hardy's new action flick now on Netflix.  It's a new one from Gareth Evans, a welsh film director who somehow found himself in South Korea directing two of the greatest action films of all time, 'The Raid' and 'The Raid 2' and then did the first series of 'Gangs Of London'... so you can imagine that this one isn't about delicate issues between emotionally repressed British people who never do anything more exciting than raising a cup of tea.   ;)

Hardy (playing a mumbly action hero again) is a cop in debt to a gangster / now powerful and respectable businessman type after doing favours for him in return for cash and is forced into finding the gangsters son when the lad is implicated in a mass murder robbery and finds himself fighting off both Chinese mafia assassins and some fellow bent cops who are in the same pursuit.  If you're familiar with Mr Evans previous work it'll be no surprise that this a hugely violent film (nobody's dead until they've had at least a dozen bullets in them and they've decorated the ceiling with their blood!   ;D ) but if you know what you're getting into then it's a pretty cool flick.  Here's the trailer, be warned, it's not family friendly...

Watched the new Mission Impossible film at the cinema yesterday...  a mixed bag, I'm afraid.  When it's good it's great but damn there's a lot of dreary stuff to get through before you get to the good bits.  I have muchly liked this films series (certainly more than certain James Bond flicks recently!) but there's so much dreary and over-complicated exposition for the first hour (damn, it's nearly three hours long!) and it's rather grim in tone, lacking in the fun and humour that other entries had.

Yes, the great action scenes DO happen (eventually) and most certainly live up to the stuff that's gone before but I have to say that it's my second least favourite MI film (after the second one, widely regarded as the lowpoint) and, seeing as it's been touted as the concluding installment of the saga the last five minutes are, well... disappointingly inconclusive?

Again, it's not a stinker by any means but I'm not keen to watch it again anytime soon, unlike other entries which gave me such a buzz...   ???

Part of me thinks I ought to see it given bits were filmed near me (underground in Middleton stone mine) but I've not followed the series so I'd probably not get a lot of it!

If you're into lavish action movies then the MI movies are well worth a punt, most of them are excellent.

I'm a huge Saturday Kitchen fan. I've watch hundreds of episodes, over the years. Can believe New Model Army got a mention on one of the recent episodes. Anita Rani was the guest. Didn't realise she used to wear punk gear and listened to the band during the 90's.

OK, 'Andor'... I'm not a fan of most of what Disney have done with 'Star Wars', downright hated much of it. But I was convinced to watch this show... and it's bloody brilliant.  A prequel to 'Rogue One' the only Disney-era Star Wars movie worth a crap.  Just finished s1 and the second and final series is lined up for a watch and I can't wait.

Just great, you don't need to watch any of the other Star Wars stuff to appreciate it, it's a dark, gritty, wonderfully made and acted show about rebellion against authority. Best TV sci-fi show since the remake of 'Battlestar Galactica'.  IMHO, obvs.   ;)

Right, went to the pictures yesterday to see '28 Years Later'... bloody loved it.  Be warned, it's a pretty mental movie, not some simple horror movie but an absolutely fooked up, surreal, somewhat 'arthouse' effort that has tonal shifts throughout, from scary as heck to rather funny to 'WTF was THAT?' from start to finish'   ;D  The cast are excellent, the cinematography is blinding, the soundtrack (by indie hipsters Young Fathers) is brilliant and there are so many unexpected twists and turns.  There seems to be a lot of online dislike for this film but if you go into it with an open mind there's an awful lot to enjoy.  And it's the first part of a trilogy (second part coming out next January) so if much of it doesn't make sense then I anticipate that we'll get some answers next time!

As for the last couple of minutes... well, that was certainly the most utterly bizarre and diversive endings to a movie I've seen in many a long year!  I wouldn't dream of spoiling it but woah... that was batshit crazy.

Have a look at the trailer...
