A Question to ask
« on: April 11, 2014, 08:46:05 PM »
If there's something you would like to ask from someone in the forum or generally, this might be a good place for that.

There wasn't a topic I could place my question (to Viv or someone who knows) so here it goes:

The board main page in the bottom tells "Most Online Ever: 260 (July 01, 2008, 06:05:27 AM)".
I've always been thinking what happened then.

a) Was it the time the new form of the board was opened?
b) The day High was released :)
c) ...or just an occurrence of some strange web search?

I'd go for the a) option...

I'll go for C but hopefully there is someone around here who still has memory cells left that can tell us.

Nice off the wall question dude!

There's no guarantee the time is right there, but I'm sure someone can work it out for you. I was around at the time but prolly not paying much attention, as per usual.

Once I heard from a moderator at another site, that the explanation for plenty of matches of a web search may occur when someone links the site in some popular search engine. Or something like that. But ain't it so that the "most online" include only the ones who've logged in? Then it should not include quests.  ??? Or whatever...

so there were a couple of things that were going on around that time.

the site had been upgraded which included the new message board. for a while the board existed on JD's site. there were all sorts of issues with MP3's and the like. Here is a link to the waybackmachine archive for the site that might stir a few memories https://web.archive.org/web/20000619033106/http://www.newmodelarmy.org/fhome.htm

heres the message board - https://web.archive.org/web/20000619033106/http://www.newmodelarmy.org/fhome.htm

and the album was being released around that time which was creating traffic

also, when a new site is brought online i am sure there are what they are web crawlers in abundance. these are little agents that are sent out by google and bing and yahoo and all the others who pride themselves in providing search portals. they have to visit each site and capture all the relevant information so that when you search with an ambiguous term then they might be able to find a match. with tags and search engine optimisation developing at the sped of light this has become much more structure but back in the day it may not have been.

by the way, www.archive.org is a fascinating place. it contains images of sites from years and years ago. if there were places you used to go to on the web then you can find it here and remind yourself of the posts you used to make back in the day.

A - To paraphrase Joolz: The brazilian public buy records with bright covers hence the changes
B - Ashley Cartwright is/was a friend of Justin's. He is mentioned by name in the bootleg of the Keighley Funhouse gig from 1981. An early version of 51st State, (called '53rd State of America') is available on the Lyon October 1985 bootleg. It is shorter (missing the last verse) and at the time was acoustic. Notable because it was performed a year before it's single release.

I'd have a question here to Gaijin:

May I ask a little bit who you are? Someone from the older noticeboard? The topics you've created recently are loaded with lots of interesting hard-to-find details. It's nice to read them. Please don't get me wrong, but with only twenty posts yet, it's clear you're not a newcomer with NMA & Family. Dedication...  :)

Ray, the site went up back in 1998. The links in my post above give later versions of the site and the noticeboard/messageboard and now forum. I'm colour blind so stick with me. when you click the second link you come to a page that has what looks like a horizontal graph across the top in the middle. it says 109 captures to the left and has a year, month and date feature to the right. the vertical dark lines are the dates over time that the site was captured by web search engine agents. you can slide the marker on the graph, click to list the individual captures and view them as web pages, or use the arrows on the date to move forward and back. the height of the dark vertical line seems to denote detail captured so from '08 onwards there appears to be a lot more info. but its interesting to browse. heres a link to a break down of info from the discussion board from way back in the day

It was a smaller case compared to this. I think it was opened in 1995 or -96. Couldn't remember it so well. Orange texts on a black background.
