Loreena McKennitt - simply in a league of her own for almost 40 years now! Fantastic pianist, harpist and vocalist. Have seen her more than 20 times now, and she's never been anything less than perfect in concert.

A pleasure! It's criminal just how unknown she is, with all this fantastic talent and such a unique individual in every way. The last time I saw her was in Manchester a couple of years ago. A bit like NMA, she seems to be better known in Europe than here. I think the only other person on this board who knows about her is 8.

She's awesome. I've seen here a few times in the US and Europe (including UK, Royal Albert Hall), and each time she just exceeded any previous expectations. One of the very few performers outside of NMA who are always able to create a special atmosphere. Truly talented!

If you have to recommend 3 or 5 albums from her, which ones?

I know Loreena McKennitt's name but mostly for a terrible cheesy movie ha ha...you can hear her beautiful voice in:

I'm quite glad someone else here does know about her! I first saw her around 1989-90, I think, (I know it was somewhere around the time of Impurity!) and was blown away by her performance. I couldn't even sleep that night. The same thing happened on more than one occasion. Simply had never seen anyone like her on stage. For me, although the music is very different, the male equivalent is Nick Cave.

To answer Guillaume, ah...yes...that film.  :)  My 3 recommendations from the studio albums would be:

The Book of Secrets
The Mask & the Mirror
An Ancient Muse

I was washing dishes yesterday, not really thinking about anything, when suddenly out of nowhere this song popped into my head like someone just pressed 'play'... It didn't leave me in peace.
The song is ''Gula Gula'' by Mari Boine. She's a Norwegian Sami, singing in traditional Sami joik style, combining it with jazz/folk/world music.
While the song was haunting me, I was baffled how it was possible that I had completely forgotten it and hadn't listened to her music for years... It's beautiful and I truly like the Sami languages.
I remember the first time when I heard her music...probably eighteen years ago, in a small jazz&blues festival back in Finland. It was a nice sunny day, festival tent on this small island, the ticket was cheap and you were allowed to bring your own alcohol. Slightly tipsy, I saw Mari Boine and her orchestra, and it was just beautiful, powerful experience. I knew nothing about her beforehand, but that concert blew me away.

Just listening to the new Evanescence album 'The Bitter Truth' and it's really rather good.  Amy Lee has a terrific voice and there are some superb songs here, this is my favourite, 'Use My Voice'.
