Hard to beleive someone who could write such beautiful words could screw himself up so badly. Very sad.  :'(

Indeed. That's also why, when i am listening to "It's getting dangerous", "Got to give it up" or "Reneagade", i'm teary eyed!...so many songs seem to relate to Phil Lynott's life...so many touching and beautifully written lyrics.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sW_pDKKgJ4Y

"The man finds himself alone for the first time in his life
He's always got a problem, he's got to work it out wrong or right
He's got to work it out, he's so lonely in the night
He's got to work it all alone"
...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmg52aTlXDA

"I've got to give it up I've got to give it up
That stuff
Tell my mama and tell my pa
That their fine young son didn't get far
He made it to the end of a bottle
Sitting in a sleazy bar
He tried hard but his spirit broke
He tried until he nearly choked
In the end he lost his
Bottle drinking alcohol
Tell my brother I tried to write and
Put pen to paper but I was frightened
I couldn't seem to get the words out right
Right quite right
Tell my sister I'm sinking slow
Now and again I powder my nose
In the end I lost my bottle
It smashed in a casbah
I've been messing with the heavy stuff
For a time I couldn't get enough
But I'm waking up and it's wearing off
Junk don't take you far
Tell my Mama I'm coming home
In my youth I'm getting older
And I think it's lost control
Mama I'm coming home"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIM0YfywWDE

"He's just a boy that his lost his way
He's a rebel that has fallen down
He's a man that doesn't fit
He's a king but not in this town
To you and me he's a renegade
He's just a boy who has lost his sights
He's a stranger, prowls the night
Check it out, check his face
Look at his eyes, they're so sly
I wonder why he cries from the inside
I wonder why he's a renegade
He's just a boy that has lost his way
He's just a boy, that's all"

Yeah Renegade is a great LP - not a bad song on it - and Snowy White's guitar playing is beautiful -  Phil Lynott gave Snowy White some hard times for his lack of image and sure he did have bad taste in clothing - Looked like he went shopping with Dennis Waterman but he played a real subtle and strong guitar style.  And sure yeah Tony S I agree Darren Whartons contribution to Angel of Death really upped that song - as did his cocktail jazz piano riffing really make Fats...all good stuff -

I agree with all of this...

If there's one single album that sums up TL... what would that be?

I have to revisit the 70's albums but i would say "Renegade" (not a favourite among Thin Lizzy's fans but probably my favourite) or "Johnny the fox" or "Bad reputation".
The "Live Life" is highly recommended too:

TL are a band that I'm aware of, but never really investigated... I must get on that!

 ???
Jailbreak. It defined them I think
Hala (from the Anglo-Saxon word "halh", meaning nook or remote valley), until it was gifted by King Henry II to Welsh Prince David Owen and became known as Halas Owen

Ha, that is true ! I think he answered the criticisms quite well with the song It's No Secret on his White Flames album though. Think he was trying to say he lets his music do the talking;

"It's no secret - I'm not the kind you talk to
It's no secret - there's nothing much to see

Well that's alright

It's no secret - I don't do much drinking
It's no secret - I never watch T.V.

Well that's alright
That's okay

I don't go to parties
And I don't talk to any big stars
I don't do much singing
But I like to drive those fast cars

It's no secret, no secret (4x)

It's so easy to see I'm not in fashion
It's so easy to see that I don't care

Well that's alright
That's okay

It's no secret, no secret baby
It's no secret, no secret"

Thought beige was an appropriate colour for the lyrics  ;D

Got a compilation of Tin Lizzy. Good band. Great guitar sounds. Lively and loud, in the right balance.

And while the threads still alive Ray I've been thinking that Life is a much better intro to the band - better songs and there's something about the pathos of a band playing so brilliantly while everythings about to fall apart...it's just that Live and Dangerous is classic Thin Lizzy - I think a better LP is LiveLife - but whichever you go for out of any suggestions in this post there's gonna be something in there that gets you - they're all great albums - except Chinatown - that's not a great album.

What is great in "Life" is that you have all the Lizzy muscians, great live performances and the whole career of this great band is covered...the live performances of "Renegade" with the audience clapping during the early great bass intro, "Angel of death", "Got to give it up", etc, are great here.
And "Chinatown" has some good tracks too. ;)

Does anyone here own the remastered, special editions/package cds of "Johnny the fox", "Bad reputation", "Renegade" and the others...released one or two years ago?

Has anyone here read this book?
If i am right, it's the only one about Lynott and Thin Lizzy.

Snowy White's Blues Agency

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAPKwMb2_hg

I also like what he did on my favourite Thin Lizzy album, the underrated "Renegade".

Yes ! I love Renegade too ! :)

It's the first album and first song i"ve heard from Thin Lizzy in the mid or late 80's, and i loved it from the start! I don't really know why this album met kind of hostile reviews from the critics and Thin Lizzy fans back in the 80's...great melodies and lyrics, in all cases.
It's too bad that Phil Lynott died so young.  :'(

Yeah, Snowy co-wrote the title track with Phil. I immediately liked it the first time I heard it. Also love Angel of Death on the same album. I don't really get the hostile reviews either. Though the band were struggling as a unit by those days. Snowy admitted he didn't really fit in with the band (though I think he did musically), and left after that. There's a good write-up here about the album

Thanks for the links Tony S!!
I love Phil's voice and bass style...awesome!
"It's getting dangerous" is also a great closing song to "Renegade", great touching lyrics...also "Mexican blood", "Fats", "Hollywood", all the tracks were good/great, but there were many different styles in the album so i guess the fans and the critics didn't know what to think of an album so different, at the time!
