Thin Lizzy
« on: July 13, 2014, 10:03:15 AM »
Sorry if there was already a thread about the band here but i can't find it anymore..

Are there some fans of Thin Lizzy here on this board? ;)

I would say that Phil Lynott (R.I.P.) is one of my favourite songwriter with Justin, i love his voice, sensual, sensitive, heartfelt songrwriting and his bass playing.
I discovered the band when i was a kid in the 80's, i remember my older brother was a huge heavy metal fan and he had just bought the "Renegade" vynil...now 25 years later i am still a fan of "Renegade" (the title and the album) and i also think that "Johnny the fox", "Bad reputation" and the others are brillant albums and songs...
I know that Lizzy is still alive and i almost catched a gig of them in Paris, back in 2011 but for whatever reasons i missed them...
are they still worth seeing live after all these years?
Phil Lynott is not anymore with us, sadly, so i think that Thin Lizzy without him must be a band without soul and magic...

Loved Lizzy in my mid to late teens. Always regretted I wasnt old enough to hear them live. Jailbreak was probably the breakthrough album I reckon. Loved The Cowboy song and Running back. Black Rose was a decent album and I also like Renegades.
Hala (from the Anglo-Saxon word "halh", meaning nook or remote valley), until it was gifted by King Henry II to Welsh Prince David Owen and became known as Halas Owen

Hey Guillaume this is my kind of post...Thin Lizzy one of my favourite bands.  I saw the new version a coupla times recently.  I gotta say Ricky Warrick does a great job - similar to when Spider (Pogues) had to take the helm whenever Shane lost it during their last 90s Shane gigs and then their period of Shanelessness.  Sure Phil Lynott was the magic of the band but Scott Gorham is really something - he's also a magician - more subtle than Phil Lynott but if you see the band and hone in on that guitar you're in for a treat.
They're called Black Star Riders these days in a respectful attempt to preserve the integrity of the name Thin Lizzy (no I don't work for the band but if you want to send me a tenner...) so you don't get that nostalgic hit of the Thin Lizzy logo behind the drumkit - talking of - I believe Brian Downeys still there but I'm not sure of this - but what a drummer.  There's not many 60 odd year old drummers can still play like their twenty something selves but BD was always so slack and funky - he plays like he always did - very good.
I've never been a Darren Wharton (keyboards) fan and so his leaving was a good thing for me - they're focusing more on the ROCK show which brings me to - well; Marco Mendoza for me just didn't look right - I don't care if he can play bass good when he looks like Motley Crue - I didn't want him there - and now he's left and they've replaced him with some guy from RATT for goodness sake - RATT!  Yuk.

reports and forums I've read are all saying that Limehouse Lizzy is a much more enjoyable Thin Lizzy experience - I've not seen em yet.  I'd totally recommend Black Star Riders - keep your focus away from the metal kids up there; hone in on Ricky Warwick, Scott Gorham and Brian Downey (if he's there) and block out the others - some good music played well.

man don't get me started I could go on all night...
Some of John Sykes guitar work on LiveLife is so psychedelic - crazy that he went off to heavymetalheavenWhitesnake but there you go - LiveLife and acid go together real good. His other Thin Lizzy LP Thunder and Lightning is really something too - a real resurgence.
If I had to knife at my throat pick a fave LP I would go for Johnny The Fox or maybe Bad Reputation or maybe just say ok kill me I can't decide :)
Tracks?  Check out Wild One - a beauty - and Sitamoia and the Phil Lynott/Mark Knopfler 'Kings Call'.  Ah and Genocide from Chinatown and then the obvious stuff - Emerald was mentioned here - a great song and lets shout Got To Give it Up/Opium Trail/Angel of Death/Fats/Suicide/Waiting For An Alibi/Southbound/Dear Lord/The Sun Goes Down/Running Back
Shall I stop?...man I love Thin Lizzy.

Those are great songs!!
What do you think of "Renegade"?
Many Lizzy fans don't seem to like this album...i just love many songs on it, personally ("Renegade", "Mexican Blood", "It's getting dangerous", "Angel of death", "Hollywood"...)

For some reason, a lot of Lizzy fans and critics didn't like the Chinatown and Renegade albums much, and Snowy White's guitar playing was blamed for this, but personally I love that man's guitar playing. So melodic and bluesy. I rate the Renegade album highly amongst the selection of Thin Lizzy albums I have (haven't got them all by some way as yet !). I really like the title track, and Angel of Death is a huge favourite too. Love Darren Wharton's keyboards on that as well !

Bad Reputations a good album. Particularily like Soldier of Fortune. Also worth a mention are the live version of Still in Love with you. I also like some of the older songs. Sitamoia, Little Girl in Bloom, Eire and the first version of Sarah is brilliant. Always wanted a Lizzy Tshirtin my late teens but they were non existant. Was chuffed to see the Darkness highlighting the cause!

Nearly forgot Old Flame from Johnny the Fox. Not my favourite album but nice song. Hard to beleive someone who could write such beautiful words could screw himself up so badly. Very sad.  :'(

Yeah Renegade is a great LP - not a bad song on it - and Snowy White's guitar playing is beautiful -  Phil Lynott gave Snowy White some hard times for his lack of image and sure he did have bad taste in clothing - Looked like he went shopping with Dennis Waterman but he played a real subtle and strong guitar style.  And sure yeah Tony S I agree Darren Whartons contribution to Angel of Death really upped that song - as did his cocktail jazz piano riffing really make Fats...all good stuff - this post led me to check out the Black star Riders LP on youtube - I'm not sure about it - I liked some but not much - and is that a nod from Ricky Warwick to New Model Army on the cover - I guess it's coincidence but was good to see it there.

TL are a band that I'm aware of, but never really investigated... I must get on that!

If there's one single album that sums up TL... what would that be?

 ???

I think a great first point of call is Live and Dangerous but if you've an aversion to live albums or even a preference for studio it would be Bad Reputation.
