"Some people seem confused as to what or whom the figures I painted for the latest New Model Army album, Between Wine & Blood, might represent. Many of you will know that for over 40 years I have studied various spiritual paths and practices, especially very ancient ones, purely out of interest and because it was also a lifetime interest of my late father. The male figures in the paintings represent tribal shamen - a priest if you like - channelling the animals the tribe will be hunting in order to ensure a successful hunt and trance dancers who add their energy to that channelling thus aiding the shamen. There are two shamen figures, one of them a tribal chieftain or king who is also functioning as a shaman. The female figures are warriors, and a priestess of the Goddess and her hand maidens. I endeavoured to reinterpret the Neolithic styled figures of Herne The Hunter & The Herlathing (The Wild Hunt) and the totem animals of the previous album, Between Dog & Wolf, in a more earthy and human way, to evoke a Summoning of the Spirit something New Model Army concerts themselves often evoke. A very great deal of thought and time go into New Model Army covers aside from the actual painting itself and I am always happy to answer anyone's questions about them.
