New U2
« on: September 11, 2014, 03:02:46 AM »
Anyone else surprised to see the new album?  And available for free download?

Just a few songs in, but it seems pretty good.

No but I do really love U2 even if people claim that the have sold out. The early U2 has the same passion level as NMA.

liked a few songs on the first album. one or two off the second

i can like them for their music. not sure i appreciate bono and his antics though. could never compare to nma so much or maybe ireland didn't have the soul and hardship that the north of england in the late 70s and early 80s.

I do like some of their earlier stuff but I'm always a bit cynical when it comes to U2. Every little thing always seems to be a part of some carefully orchestrated marketing strategy somehow. You wouldn't get an album called '**** Texas, sing for us' from U2, that's for sure.

I'm listening to it now. Typical late-U2 which doesn't do much for me. As it is currently competing with BWAB, it really doesn't stand a chance of holding my attention for very much longer.

I haven't bloody got BWAB; Maybe this weekend.
And yes, I'm sure they got a bit of coin from Apple, good on them.  And they know that a shit ton of people will crawl over hot coals to get some limited edition vinyl that will probably sell for $50-75.  And then tons more will buy the CD (me included).
I've got nothing against Bono, he's trying to have a little fun.  Besides, he and the rest of the band do a lot of good in this world and he's quite intelligent.
Personally, I've like most of their stuff give or take an album or two, and this one seems pretty decent too.

Oh - I didn't mean for this thread to turn into a pro/anti U2 thread.  Just some discussion on the surprise of a new album and the decision to release it freely before it leaked anyway.

u2 are always going to be a topic where you either love 'em or you hate them

i saw them in the early days and then when they came back to ireland in the mid 80s

they had gone from a band that had something to one that just went with a formula

so i sit on both sides

i haven't listened to the new album, and probably won't.

I don't have an iTunes account, so haven't heard it yet... might get a naughty download at some point... hey, they gave it away for free!

Not sure why people are getting so upset about this free album showing up on their account... um, you don't want it, just delete the fucker?   :(

I have mixed feelings about U2... there are several albums I really enjoy (Achtung Baby, The Joshua Tree, War, Zooropa, All hat You Can't Leave Behind)  and even on the ones I wasn't too keen on, there are some pretty good tunes... put it like this, IMO, U2 on a bad day are one **** of a lot better than Coldplay on their best day...  ???

I think it's automatically loaded in your cloud storage, and I assume that if you're got an internet connection, it will try to play if you're on random.  Could be wrong about that, but not sure.  And I'm not sure how easy it is to delete from your iCloud account.  If you're 80 yrs old and listening to Pat Boone and this pops on your speakers, I could see how someone could be a bit irritated.

I had to actually look for it in my 'purchases' tab and then download it so it's not like you have to listen to it. I played it a couple of times but it's really not doing much for me.

I finally got around to listening to this album and... it's rather good.  The Miracle Of Joey Ramone, Every Breaking Wave, Song For Someone, Volcano, The Troubles... pretty good tunes.

Yeah, I know, I'm late to the party...

I really like it
Wouldn't have given it a listen if it hadn't been free but loving Volcano and Cedarwood
