Ok you asked for it. We have just had the excellent Beatles v Stones thread, so i wanted to expand it. So what are your favourite  "super groups" and the reasons why Be it the aforementioned Beatles and stones or Floyd, deep purple led zeppelin the who etc etc. I suppose most of these bands started in the 60s or the early 70s.

Queen. In particular anything up to 1978 when they were young and fresh and at the height of their talent. Many great songs and for me a little bit different to anything else at the time.
Hala (from the Anglo-Saxon word "halh", meaning nook or remote valley), until it was gifted by King Henry II to Welsh Prince David Owen and became known as Halas Owen

Would "The Doors" count?

I don't really have one.

Well the 1st Super group I ever saw live was Pink Floyd back in 1975 in Tuscon Az when I was in college. Now I have always been a Floydian since my freshman year in high school in 1970 as when one of my school mates  told me about them and he let me listen to  Astronomy Domine . It was so different from every other song and what other groups were playing plus that was in my learning to play lead guitar phase so hearing these different sounds just made the band special to me. Of course I guess I lived in the golden Age of Rock as I was there for the 1st British Invasion and the 2nd so all the great bands were either starting and putting out their best music during my Teenage years. So I have seen the Floyd at their height and Yes bands in those days did play 2 hrs plus as the 1st concert I saw the Floyd they played all of Animals some of the song names were different All of Wish you were here, All of Darkside  then the encore was the full version of Echoes Yes I did have the usual amount of chemical stimulants for the heighten awareness of the music  ;) ;D But the stage effects and giant Screen and videos and remember this is 1975 so the Floyd were way ahead of any MTV or any other band in having special effects  I can still remember that concert after almost  40 yrs .

Anyway others I have seen Led Zeppelin in their glory here at Madison So part of that Song Remains the same Movie For those series of shows I was there as Led Zepp played 5 nites in NYC  sold out all of them my friend had a father who was a Union Boss got tickets thru the union the best seats I ever had I was in row 9 front center so I got the full Led Zepp sound. I have seen Rush 3 times don't know if you consider TOOL a supergroup but I have seen them a few times.

But my Top super groups are Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, at least that's what I would call Supergroups as that to me means groups that can fill stadiums and their music is timeless Now the Beatles and Stones yes they are super groups and I do love a lot of the music they put out. 8)

Super group used to mean a group made up of musicians who had been fairly popular in other bands or were the best around at playing their instruments. That narrows the list considerably in my mind. I don't judge an immensely popular group to be a super group just because they are extremely popular.

I love the Beatles and the Stones, Deep Purple, etc but I don't really consider them to be super groups because they didn't form from other groups like Cream, West, Bruce, and Laing, and some others.
I guess it depends on how you define the term.
I'm geared towards the averagae rather than the exceptional.

Super groups are timeless
Their music still finds new fans more than 20 ore more years later - the group has gone, perhaps some of the members aren`t still alive or now playing/producing something new

(Yesterday there was a docu about Jimmy Carl Black (Zappa) on tv - Where is the beer and when do we get paid? -
that`s live and live for one we think is a super star often ends not that easy and without problems paying a bill and other problems becoming old) :(
And me, I`ve got a black place in my heart
Still got this hole in me
Perhaps - I am the master of nothing?

Well some of them created another super groups: like Deep Purple was a start to the Rainbow,  Whitesnake, Dio and others. You could not to talk of some of them without talking of each other. :)

Don't want to be supernerd here but Supergroup is a term that refers to a band made out of other big shot bands...Asia are a supergroup - ELP are a supergroup but great bands aren't supergroups.  So back to that don't want to be a supernerd - too late - I know - ok I'm gone x

Fair point and I posted Queen without thinking it through. Probably a bit too young to name any supergroups in that respect. ......yay. Too young  ;D

My musical taste tends to gravitate away from super groups.
I like some songs by some super groups but seeing a band in a massive, seated stadium takes all the fun out of seeing live music. It's just not personal for me.
