Don Coscarelli and the "Phantasm" movies series
« on: September 30, 2016, 05:17:27 PM »
Are there fans around here of this director and especially the series he created for the big screen almost 40 years ago, "Phantasm"??

If you haven't seen it, i strongly recommend to you to give a look to the first "Phantasm" (1978), very haunting, creepy, surreal movie full of memorable visuals and soundtrack...the last one from the series will be released on the US big screens next week! here's the trailer:

And here's the new trailer of the first "Phantasm", which has been remastered by JJ Abrams ("Star wars", "Alias") team for the big screen and then the Blu Ray at the end of the year!:

Another great Don Coscarelli film is "Bubba Ho Tep" starring Bruce Campbell (the "Evil dead" series) and Ossie Davis.

I love the wrk of don coscarelli. i have this wonderful special edition dvd-set of the phantasm series. all dvds are packed inside a silver sphere.

i didn't know that there was another part coming and that the original is granted a 4k remastering is also a surprise. the new part is not directed by coscarelli but he produced and wrote the screenplay, i could see at the trailers you posted. promising.

i totally recommend: john dies at the end
it's by coscarelli, some years old but it immediately has become one of my favourite movies.
ever tried. ever failed. no matter.
try again. fail again. fail better.

Never seen any of the Phantasm movies.

Really?
I'm sure that you will like it, it has an european, Argento feel at times ;), in the locations, lightning and soundtrack...and what a soundtrack it is!!:

It's also one of the first horror movies with a very dream-like narrative, 5 years before "A nightmare on Elm Street".

i once owned it too! very cool looking package!! Now i want the Blu Ray package of the whole series...in a few months it will be available, under the Christmas tree!! :)

"Phantasm Ravager" was directed by one of the (special effects) guy who previously worked on the series, but was indeed written and produced by Coscarelli...here's one of the early reviews from this new "Phantasm":

I'm pretty sure it won't be theatrically released here in my country France but i guess there will be limited screenings in festivals, for example...i would like to see it on the big screen and especially the new 4K print of "Phantasm"...never seen the first movie on the big screen, it must be something on the big screen!! so haunting, i guess!!

I will give it another viewing because i was a bit disappointed the first time i saw it (dvd)...others Coscarelli movies i really like are "Bubba to tep" (great acting in this film, soundtrack and moving ending), "Kenny and company" and to a lesser extent "The beastmaster". I would like to see Coscarellii's first movie, "Jim the world's greatest"...have you seen it Cthulhu?
I also like the fact that Coscarelli remains an "indie" director, doing what he wants to do, cheap priced movies where he is mostly the unique auteur...he has his own little universe.
