New Model Army mentioned on Emmerdale
« on: December 25, 2017, 04:28:31 PM »
If there is anyone else out there willing to admit being a watcher of Emmerdale, did you notice Doug mention New Model Army, first in the Cromwellian context, and then add also the name of a post-punk band ?

On the xmas day episode @ 5.50pm

Hala (from the Anglo-Saxon word "halh", meaning nook or remote valley), until it was gifted by King Henry II to Welsh Prince David Owen and became known as Halas Owen

Old bloke making mince pies:-
“… carols were banned in Cromwell’s day you know. He thought they were decadent.
Goodness knows what he would have made of 6 year olds getting pod-phones and the like.
Shall I tell you something I know? He was the commander of the New Model Army. Which is the name of a band. And bands sing songs.”

Other actor:-
“Ah. Get you, the pop prince.”

Old bloke:-
“Oh, not pop love. More punk. Well, post-punk these days I might say.”

You know what, gp(h), I'm not gonna ask if that is true or not... I'd just prefer it to be true.   :)

Sorry you all in the UK but I don't have the faintest idea what this "Emmerdale" is all about. Should I investigate? I'm into old TV shows like "The Three Stooges", etc, plus newbies "Better Call Saul" (and "Breaking Bad", natch!), but I've never heard of this. Recently I discovered "No Activity", a very funny Australian cop series.

It's a popular terrestrial TV soap-opera watched by around 7 million people. Maybe not the ideal target market for a plug of NMA, but is was nice to hear our band mentioned on mainstream TV on Christmas day.

I can recall that Deek from Oi Polloi mentioned once something about their friend cast a side role (police!) in Emmerdale.  :)
Emmerdale was shown regularly here during 90's.

I have family (ex wife's side) in Leeds and someone I know in said family works at the ITV Emmerdale set up, Because of the proximity of Leeds to Bradford I am afraid it was only a matter of time!! God forbid the band get played on Eastenders - Sorry London I hope You get My point, I am a recovering soap opera addict - I have 2+ hours a day now to do better things !!

Clearly, one of the writers has terrific taste in music, must be a fan.  And, free publicity is always great for the band!  Emmerdale used to air in Canada, not sure if it still does though.  What are the chances of NMA being name dropped on "Coronation Street"?  That soap airs 6 days a week here, on CBC.  Used to watch it, but I gave up television years ago.

I believe you are recalling Edge Of Darkness (the cracking TV series with Bob Peck and Joanne Whalley rather than the inferior Mel Gibson movie).

Just have to comment to this topic as it randomly rose here... I've definitely missed any mention of NMA in Emmerdale, but this tv show was huge (&maybe still is) in Finland. Fond memories of knitting socks and watching Emmerdale, they used to show two episodes per day in Finnish tv... :D
