Ouch!
« on: January 08, 2019, 09:25:51 PM »
.
Going through some old NMEs and Melody Makers and came across this little snippet about New Model Army from 2/14/87 edition of Melody Maker:

"The NMA have been with us for far too long now and their insidious blend of biker philosophy and left-wing fascism has not changed despite the well-deserved hidings they've had over the years. They are quite simply a pack of worthless saps who revel in pretending they are "warriors on the edge of time" or something. In my opinion they should conduct a tour of West Africa and see how well they get on convincing the suffering Senegalese of the tragic plight of British youth."

Ouch.

I knew the British music press hated them, but man, that's pretty strong stuff.

Can't believe this opinion was really printed in a magazin. Never read anything like it about a musicband in a music magazin by a newspaper critic. if that's true it would be really interesting to get to know the story behind it. what shall these accusations even mean?
Sadly i didn't find anything on the inet to prove that quote.

Are you implying I made that up?

Melody Maker - Feb. 14, 1987. Page 33.
Go to ebay or something and buy yourself a copy.

You clearly have never read those British music mags Melody Maker or New Musical Express, have you? To be honest, that blurb about New Model Army was pretty mild compared to what those music rags usually write. Hell, even their crossword puzzle was nasty. I still remember one clue:
2 ACROSS: this insect happily is no longer crawling up the charts.
(The answer was ANT as in Adam Ant.)

No, i was trying to express my disbelief in general, that this was published in a magazin. But it must be true when they also picked on the Levellers and as you stated that this very aggressive writing was kind of common. So this was like the Sun but about music?

I think the bit about "left-wing Fascism" killed it for me.

Where is Melody Maker now? Dead and buried thank goodness.
Where are NMA? going from strength to strength.

Where is Melody Maker now?
.
I have no idea where Melody Maker is. I don't see it at my newsstands any longer. But then I am really not looking. Music press doesn't interest me as it once did because music doesn't interest me as it once did. Music has really gone down the toilet over the past decade. I can safely say the music world is awful. When Prince died that was the end of music.

Well let me elucidate; MM went bust in 2000.

Uhh, I did my own research. Melody Maker didn't go bust (I knew you were wrong), rather they merged with the NME.

It went bust. NME took on some of its journos. So what.

Hilarious though you posted earlier you didn;t know where MM went, then you actually did some homework and found out.

Again, as I've said in a previous post, you are trying to stir things up, take a simple discussion and ramp it p to 11 on a 10 scale. What is your issue?

How is that "hilarious"? You pointed out the MM went bust, I don't believe anything from anybody so I did my own quick Google scan and found out the info for myself. And I was right not to trust info from you. Melody Maker did not go bust as you said. It was in fact was absorbed by NME. Bust means no existence at all, no trace, gone.

But, hey, I do appreciate your input even though it was incorrect. Thanks. You've enabled me to clear things up for everybody here.

Strangely enough you took it wrong when someone expressed that he didn’t actually just believed what you wrote in your original post but then you say you never believe what people tells you ...

So, how can you believe your « quick research » over the internet (famous for being always correct) and not what someone writes here if you don’t believe anything anytime ?

Sorry, but I found that you were really really rude and I had to say it.

BTW, you can play on word but MM went bust, the name is lost, the paper disepeared, just the fact that NME hired SOME of the « journalists » doesn’t change that fact. There is no more MM. They said it merged with NME because it was the same owner but the fact is that MM is dead and buried.

Ah the mix of sarcasm and "you know better than everyone" continues.

You clearly are not in business, bust is a term that doesn't not mean is does not exist, it is a monetary term meaning it made so many losses it couldn't continue. Certainly in the UK it means this, I suspect to you over there it means "doesn't work". Either way MM did no exist after that year.
